Good facilities and vibe on campus.
Love Aston for the way of teaching and connection to the whole city.
I attended Aston for 9 months and it had been a bad experience. It was a big mistake to choose this uni as I believed the TEF gold ranking was really good to study Mech Eng, not to mention it almost killed my future after doing the 1st year. The support I got was dreadful and a lot of the EAS staff didn't take consideration for the fact that everyone came from different educational backgrounds. Also the support I got from other students on the course was terrible. Aston was a depressing place to be in as a student and so was B'ham. It was so boring as I hardly knew anyone and I was mainly alone in the halls. 2 flatmates were hardly around!! Unite Students Aston was an absolute joke!! The social life was bad as well. If you want a uni with good social life and support (teaching, peer support etc.), you're better off going somewhere else rather than Aston. The uni only cares about money and business. They do not understand that this is a burden on students (and parents)!
Oh boy, if you are thinking of coming to Aston for engineering, DON'T. This uni has many problems it hides under the rug. The staff here are unhelpful and make the subject uninteresting. The facilities are excellent for a college but a joke for a University. The main problem with the engineering course is 50% of your mark during your degree will be based on group work, this is a big issue with the course, if your given a poor group that lack drive your chances of getting a first are out of the window. This university does not offer any engineering clubs where people can do extra-circular activities surrounding there course. For example an electronics club which is present many other unis. This university only wants money, than nurture engineers of the future and that exactly why their course is group project dominated as it's cheap to buy materials than it to have a more advanced group projects or lecturers. Please reconsider your options if your going here for engineering.
Very comfortable and lots of kind peooke
There's no problem with Aston University, just the accommodation that are not Unite
Nice and I would study here again
I studied in the Business and Languages schools 2013-2017 and did a placement abroad at a bank. Aston's first priority is employability which and the main way they do this is by offering the most employable degree subjects i.e. no TV and Drama studies. I worked part time at the career service and they go above and beyond to match students with placements and grad roles and they often have exclusive links with grad employers who actively look for Aston grads. Teaching wise there are some inspirational lecturers and teaching fellows who really know their stuff, plenty of guest speakers and some newer average tutors who read from slides (like most unis).I found no shortage of help during office hours etc. The teaching I would rate 5 star. Main building is ugly but campus is good. Uni sports are inclusive but of low standard. Lots of green environmental projects going on. City centre location comes with all the pros and cons expected.
Great facilities and support when you need it
Good facilities provided and many sports societies available to all.
I enjoy the university and its facilities.
As a student of Aston my uni experience has not been the best as time has gone on. Particularly when it came to finding a placement. Upon joining the university I was told that the uni has strong links with businesses all across the world, an excellent careers team that would help find suitable job roles for student and that the uni had a strong reputation. This proved to be wrong as it was an extremely difficult task to find one in the end. The uni facilities are outdated in this modern day and age. They have sold off their accommodation so students from other local unis reside in the on-campus accoms. The teaching particularly Marketing is outdated and poorly taught.
Top Uni! close to city center / lots of facilities available
Aston Uni holds loads of social events which allows us to get to know different people and take part in things that we would'n usually.
I have enjoyed my uni experience so far
The university is a little outdated but has help me throughout my degree.
University services and facilities are up to standard.
Not much help with careers support, dont have much hope after university for support with a role
Careers service is one of the best parts
The accommodation is within excellent reach of all local services, shops and buses.
Above average, not outstanding
It's a small university so for what it is, it has enough. The students union isn't very good or a good night out but the new SU should be better!
Central location / great facilities! campus is great!
Fantastic societies that provide a home away from home
Brillant campus, i feel like this is a home away from home
Wifi coverage could be better and services from the SU could be better, this will probably impove the new SU building.
Lovely university in the center of Birmingham
It’s ok, not the best but not the worst.
Great University, a variety of clubs and societies available and amazing careers service.
Aston University has a great reputation in Business and Management courses. Furthermore, there are a lot of intellectual professors who have a remarkable experience in business area.
The su is awful but everything else is pretty decent.
The university is very supporting of the students and will always help. There are a wide range of facilities for subjects which can be found on campus but many sources online. Lectures are recorded also making it easy to go back over for revision or seminars which is really helpful for your understanding. Aston also offers placement years which I would say it essential to being employable once your degree is over and gives you the experience to stand out from the crowd. Within the university there are always events on to social and also specifically for your chosen subject. This is good as it gives insight to the reality of the subject you are studying. I have had a very positive experience at Aston so far.
Friendly environment, been happy ever since I joined and couldn’t ask for a better uni experience! I love being in the centre of the city so everything is in arms reach, and though the SU isn’t good now the new one will be finished in the spring :)
Really enjoyable university, very nice family feel to the whole university because it is small, campus is compact but has everything you need (means you can get to lectures in 5 mins), most lecturers engaging and good
Best decision of my life coming to Aston
Aston campus is the perfect oasis in the heart of a bustling city centre.
All the facilities needed and want, clubs and societies are amazing. Never had an issue with internet anywhere on campus. And placement/careers help is readily available. SU is out dated but a new one is being finished for next year and it looks better
Societies and clubs are all excellent. A new Students union is being built but the current one is way too small. Teaching quality is above average and mentors available are very good.
My experience has been amazing the staff are caring, the facilities Are wonderful. It’s just a short walk from the City Center which is amazing. There’s even a Tesco’s on site and a Costa. The standard of education is soo High. As with all unis there are is the odd few let’s say annoying lecturer but the amazing ones out way this for sure.
The uni’s people, teaching, facilities and atmosphere is amazing
Ones experience of Aston university could range dramatically depending on a few factors. However there are some constants. The organisation is dreadful, funding for final year projects is minute and first class grades are handed out to anyone with a pulse. Would not recommend.
The campus is really beautiful for being in the middle of the city, and close to the city centre for shopping. The accommodation company (Unite Students) is a nightmare though, and I would recommend finding somewhere else to stay if you attend.
Aston is a very welcoming and lively place to be. All of the staff and students are very enthusiastic and play an active role in making the university the best place possible.
Living in halls is amazing, rooms are so nice with so much storage space! So many clubs and societies to meet loads of new people.
Great compact campus in the centre of a busy city, close to everything you could need.
Really good uni, lecturers are excellent and great campus
Good uni and everything is excellent I recommend to anyone in Alevels he would not regret it it’s worth the wait even if it takes a gap year , come to Aston you will never regret
Small, compact campus with a lot of green space and an aesthetic lake with a triangle fountain. I also like the use of the study booths in the library and the fact there is a quiet floor. The student union is great too, it is a little old but it is still a nice building with common rooms and a big hall where I take part in the dance sports club. I like the societies too, however I feel there needs to be more societies/clubs, for example, art, more types of dance(tap etc), cocktail society. Overall the societies are good though and I am part of 3 which are very enjoyable.
Avoid going to Aston at all cost. When I was there is was top 20 and I am glad it has slumped down and don't believe this rubbish about how it is staff student ratio or how they will recruit top class lecturers. I studied there and I swear the lecturers did not have time for you. It is a university full of undercover racism. Most of the work is done in groups and if they put you in a group and your the only ethnic minority your contribution marks are getting duct. I am fortunate since leaving that hell I have attained 3 degrees including a Masters from Royal Holloway. I would definitely recommend Royal Holloway. The staff were so friendly and the students were all nice. The campus is beautiful. You will not regret it. Or go anywhere else. Avoid Aston at all cost.
I believe that I have experienced institutional racism here on quite an intense level. I first experienced it as an undergraduate when I walking in the corridor and overheard lecturer white stating to a white student we never had this many of them (Asian students) back in the day. I then came back to complete a postgraduate degree and found the white lectures to me favourable to the white students (evidently clique). I haven’t enjoyed this experience as a result.
The only downside about this uni is the student union.
Good uni, good social aspects, student union could be better
Racist staff and a pathetic university
Guys do not go to this university,It's a money making thing. Their idiot professors are not getting accountable for leaking exams instead university penalize students by forcing them to repeat the year. That stupid university dean does not understand the financial burden on students. It just happened to my family member recently. What a shame
LAKESIDE is by far the greatest accommodation at Aston.
Irresponsible and racist staffs who will not care about your education or career, but only the money you're putting in their pockets. Just stay away if you want a good experience during your student life.
I love the changes to the campus but I do feel that our student union is not as buzzing and social as other universities union. I think there needs to be more events and perhaps students should be asked what events they would like. Living in Birmingham we have great access to clubs on Broad Street so I think students would really appreciate the union to a space for more social activities.
One of the best university. Currently studying Mechanical Engineering and enjoying my course.
Aston is an amazing University especially for Business students. Lecturers are really helpful and campus is beautiful. It is a well known University, also world-wide known and is an achievement if you can get in. The accommodation is beautiful and right in the centre of Birmingham so you are near to everything. I can't rate 5 stars for clubs and societies as I'm not part of one but there are loads on offer. The Student Union is brilliant, especially for Freshers week and we even have our own pub on campus. Careers service is outstanding, help you from finding jobs, with your CV and help you practise interview techniques. As almost ALL students have a placement year (struggling to come across anyone who hasn't) they make you feel comfortable when finding a job.
Lovely university, very social and a tight knit community
ABSOLUTELY TERRIBLE! This Uni refused to stop a fellow student from harassing & stalking myself and other Uni friends, meaning we had to go to the Police. The Uni was aware of this other student's actions and creepy behaviour but gave him numerous undeserved second chances. Even when this other student repeatedly threatened to kill one of my Uni friends the Police had to caution him before the Uni took any real notice and even then they refused to kick him out. Eventually, when he had been arrested on various occasions and given a prison sentence suspended for 18 months, the Uni finally reluctantly said that he had run out of extra chances and was to be kicked out permanently. Far too little too late. By this time it had been going on well over a year. Little wonder that in April 2014 my Uni flatmate killed himself in the Lakeside residences. The Uni wrongly tried to hush it all up to avoid bad press and swore us to secrecy. Worse, they then let slip to me how he killed himself. AVOID!
Fantastic city campus - incredibly unique in that sense with only a 10m walk to the Bullring and Birmingham centre. Education quality and reputation is fantastic, new student union coming soon and desperately needed!!
Aston is a small friendly university in the heart of Birmingham. There's lots of support and the facilities are great! :
I love it here! The opportunities available are great!
Great experience so far, looking up to the placement
Having an amazing time here, everything is perfect and no complaints.
This uni is amazing, having a big enough campus nearly in the city centre. I really like the university and the teachers are really nice and very good at explaining the material.
Woah. What a uni. Great place to be. Wow.
I love the small, friendly feel of campus. I study English language and the lecturers are always so helpful and genuinely care about your studies. I would not have wanted to study anywhere else!
Really interesting and diverse modules, enabling you to succeed in having a high chance of graduate employment
Great at what it does, fantastic for business and engineering. Facilities are ok but always improving, been recent big investment that is starting to benefit students.
little to offer for me, but nice city
Love my course, high standard of teaching, lectures approachable and helpful, lots of practical experience. Good that the university puts emphasis on placements, a shame that these are mostly business based regardless of the course you are on; placements offered at the university are only paid if they are business/marketing placements, and lab placements are almost always unpaid. Almost no funding of societies, they rely on membership fees for everything. Almost no arts societies, such as drama, poetry, art, and music society is massively underfunded with one small practice room as its only designated room in the whole university. Overall, academic side is excellent but societies and events run by the union leaves a lot to be desired. But as Aston is a city centre campus university, it's not as important, as there is so much to do in Birmingham to make up for lack of societies and in terms of nightlife.
A university with an excellent reputation, prepares you for the future and gives you opportunies to proper.
Superb university, with great prospects.
Amazing atmosphere, lecturers are very helpful and great support and student life.
Excellent, well-maintained facilities with an effective, focused approach to employability. Contact hours for some courses, particularly Psychology, could be improved however.
Aston Uni is a great university with a welcoming student community. The lectures are also very helpful
I love it here. It's small but, it's nice to be a to walk around and recognise people. Hopefully the union will also improve with its new building.
I liked the size of the campus and student population. There were c.13,000 students when I did my Masters in 99/00. There was a real community feel. The uni is within walking distance to the city centre giving choice to stay on campus for the usual student partying or going into town. There are lots of sports to get involved in - I joined the hockey team. There are lots of clubs/societies to take advantage of to have fun and meet people.
Albeit small, this university has a lot to offer! Lovely campus where everything is a stones throw away. There are a lot of activities and clubs and as a whole you really get the sense of being part of a community! The accomdation is great value and the placements and graduate jobs that the university can link you up with are amazing!
Don't let how small the university is put you off. It's a great community, almost like a large family. Everything to close so you don't have to walk far, and overall it is a very modern and environmentally friendly campus! The placement years offered here are fantastic and really set you up perfect for a good paying graduate job!
It's such a friendly university that's a close knit community. There's a lot of clubs and activities to get involved in and the placements it offers for its students are great. There's high prospects of getting a great graduate job when you go to this university.
Friendly, fairly small university.
Very good and an amazing place to be
Really friendly campus atmosphere, loads of clubs and societies, great placement opportunities and facilities.
Perfect university that provides the best opportunities upon graduating!
Economics is poor but everything else is fantastic.
Aston provided me with 3 wonderful years, I met loads of new people and couldn't of asked for a better university experience.
Aston may be a small uni but it's like living among a massive family
Being such a small university means we have become a tight-knit community at Aston, but by no means do we do things on a small scale. The opportunities available, both academic and social, are plentiful and there is something for everyone.
With Aston being a smaller university everyone knows everyone which makes it more friendly. There is a good cultural mix which is great for socialising and learning new things.
Aston university is a great environment! Having one small campus makes it such a friendly and welcoming place. Aston academics provide great support regarding my studies and career prospects!
Great uni. Career opportunities fantastic. Facilities could be improved upon e.g common room facilities.
Cultural and vibrant university
Amazing placements team, help from the start to finish. Good facilities and a friendly campus
It's a small university but it's great. Everything is close together on campus so never takes long to go about uni.
Great small community and amazing student night
Love the languages team, very supportive teaching, lots if activities available
If you want to have a great time at Aston you can, all you need to do is open yourself up to opportunities rather than hide yourself away and not try anything out. The employability rate is great, everyone is friendly and helpful and the campus is so green and nice. Within the business school the lectures can be too large and impersonal but the VLE is very helpful.
