All the Answers You Need About Student Accommodation
What tenancy length do I need?
Some students choose to stay during the academic year, whilst others – particularly international students – require a tenancy that covers the entire year. You can also find student accommodation that is available for one or two terms, classified as a “short stay” on our search filters.
Should I stay in catered student accommodation?
This is totally up to you! Catered accommodation means you will be served meals at set times in a dining hall, and you’ll likely have access to fewer kitchen facilities than if you were to stay in self-catered accommodation.
What is a guarantor and do I need one?
A guarantor is a person who signs a contract to agree to pay your rent if you are unable to. Most university accommodation requires a guarantor, and this applies to both domestic and international students.
Will I need to pay a deposit on student accommodation?
Most likely, yes, you’ll need to pay a deposit. This will be refunded at the end of your stay as long as there is no damage to the room or property.
What bills will my rent include?
If you are staying in university-run accommodation or private halls, your rent should include any utilities such as electricity, gas, water, and internet. Students are not required to pay council tax, however you may need to fill in an exemption form so make sure you check with your local council.
What is purpose-built student accommodation?
Purpose-built student accommodation (PBSA) are residential buildings designed for students. They are often located close to campus, boast modern facilities, include all bills, and often have staff on site to assist residents.
Will my student accommodation be furnished?
Student accommodation is typically fully furnished. Your room should include at least a bed, clothes storage, desk and chair. You’ll likely need to bring things such as bedding and kitchen utensils, but we have a full list here of everything you’ll need.

I really like the place, but there is no social activities, I am disappointed about that
It’s been really fun living here
Very near to Aston university can easily reach out to university with in 5 mins. So easy and good place to avoid transport to university
DO NOT STAY HERE. They left my bedroom in disrepair for the entire year and I had no sunlight. They were aware of this since the day I moved in and refused to do anything. The management are incredibly rude and will ignore you. They have now told me in an email that they refuse to speak to me again about the issue and haven’t fixed my skylight, so there is still no sunlight!
Very nice staff and environment!
I am satisfied with the location of the accommodation.but we have some maintenance issues.I have water problems now .cold water is becoming hot in a few minutes and elevator isn’t working for several days
Nice place to stay friendly staff specially samir 🥰
The Old Fire Station is an ideal area to live to get to BCU (10mins walk) or Aston University (right outside). The reception staff are incredible with their services and resolve matters in prompt timing. The social space is beautiful and a good size to socialise. However, some amenities such as gym needs some work as some weights are missing and there is not much to work with for workouts.
very nice student studio and very nice staff. It is very convenient for students in Aston University
Lovely management team and great location
It’s a good accommodation, very friendly
The staff are lovely always very cheery and helpful, especially the 24hr reception - much much better than the other accommodations around. The location is very convenient as it is basically on campus and in city centre.
Its great, receptions are very helpful and very nice rooms.
Accommodation is near to city center with very affordable price. No deposit required. very helpful and friendly staff. they also provide social space with pool table and private study room. I love the aura of this accommodation.
I loved the hospitality of the staff they are always happy to help. The social space has so many facilities and it's an amazing place to chill with your friends or even study. The study space is always open which is amazing during the exam time. I highly recommend this place. It looks like my second home.
The staff are friendly and always happy to help
Just a review to comment on a fine smooth booking process with Khalil from Reception, very friendly service and informative and has secured me and my friends a brilliant deal for next year! A personal big thank you to Khalil!
Pleasant stay, would definitely recommend
Overall great experience! Flats are nicely designed and have a great sociable layout in comparison to other halls. Common room & study room are a massive plus. And reception staff are always super helpful!!
Would recommend to stay here as all the staff are always really helpful. Khalil, Jasmin and Baydon really made us settle in our new room and we felt very welcome upon arriving. Our room is very spacious and clean and it is a perfect choice if you are a University student.
such kind and friendly staff! no issue is too big or small. happy to help out where they can. highly recommend.
I am now coming to the end of my second year at the old fire station and i am already excited to be moving in again in september for the third year in a row. The old fire station have a handful of positive features to offer, in particular the location. 2 min walk to aston campus and a 10 min walk to city centre, you couldn’t ask for more. The staff in reception are very accommodating and are helpful in every way possible, they are always up for a chat whenever you feel lonely. Shout out to Khalil, Jasmine Nathan & Bayden for being amazing at their job!! The old fire station is the perfect place to call home, so look no further and book now!! (they also offer discount off your rent!)
I have lived at the Fire Station for nearly 4 years now, the first 3 in a studio and the last in a shared flat. The first year I was here was before the new management took over and the difference is huge. The newer staff members are really friendly and helpful. I had a noise issue with someone playing bass-heavy music above my room when I was trying to sleep and, despite it being difficult to locate and mostly happening at night, they were really keen to help me resolve it! Would recommend for an easy accommodation solution whilst studying nearby.
Second time staying at TOFS. Most helpful and genuine staff. Jasmin is also a good listener Very understanding, 10/10 service. Wouldn't recommend anywhere else.
Stayed here for two years and it’s been nothing but worth it. Really love the on site staff, especially Jasmine. She’s always quick to respond, effective and efficient in handling all queries and issues directed. I’d definitely recommend the accommodation to anyone who’s looking to study in Birmingham.
i live in the platinum studio and its amazing. The staff here are amazing. I had an issues with my room so they moved us the next day, the staff are welcoming as you going out each day either to uni or to the shop always asking how you are and to have a great day. The mail is great they email you when they have something for you so it does not get taken. i could not fault the staff at all they are always ways there to help you the best they can. I would live here for the rest of my if I could. I love this place. I would recommend you stay here if you go to Aston or Birmingham city university.
I stayed off-campus because I wanted to stay near the city centre. I found out later that staying in a student accommodation isn't the best value for your money. You could end up spending around a 1000 pounds per month for a small room and your own toilet. But if you rented a room in a shared house off-campus you could spend as little as 400 pounds per month and live a lot more comfortably.
Fantastic Experience, Staff are great! The best in Brum.
my first ever uni acomodation , and loved every part of my stay here , the staff were amazing and helpful especially during the lockdown which we all had to go through and despite that the staff were 100% there to help which is really good.
I would NOT recommend anyone to stay at the Old Fire Station. They are better places which are better value for money. I have a silver en-suite in which I pay £160 a week for. The room itself is nice however the whole year I did not have a window that could open. This is frustrating as in the hotter months the rooms would get very hot. The KITCHEN didn’t even have windows that you could open. I constantly had to have a cool fan on and if I wanted fresh air I’d have to go outside. The majority of the staff were lovely and welcoming apart from one woman named Ola I believe who was very rude for my whole stay. She never bothered to make an effort in finding your parcels for you. Would also often say they hadn’t yet been delivered when they’d been signed for. With her you literally have to BEG for your parcels. The rest of the staff are very lovely and helpful but trust me overall it isn’t worth it and your better off finding somewhere else to live. I can’t name how many parcels I’ve lost.
Covid-19: Yes they’ve helped by implementing social distancing in reception and hanging up posters.
The Internet here it's so bad it doesn't even deserve 1 star
Very good student accommodation, lovely staff and extremely close to Aston Uni and amenities☺
I moved here in October 2019 and the staff are always happy to help and friendly. The accommodation is very clean and if there are any maintenance problems the staff are very quick to find and fix it. The location is perfect as its right in the heart of Birmingham city center. Universities are within close walking distance. Overall i would recommend living here!
A very modern, fun and hands on student accommodation. Regular events which help you meet people. 24/7 reception staff which is reassuring if you ever need help at night.
I'm the parent if a student who lived here in the bandstand. I must say that this building does have room for improvement! It's not terrible but could be better. My daughter has had a positive experience whilst living here on the whole other than the ventilation issue in her room. I have to say that all staff members are lovely and do a great job at bridging the gap for the short fall in this building. Massive shout out to Blair! He is truly an asset to the team and he honestly goes above and beyond to make sure that everyone is happy.
Rebooked last week! Absolutely love this place! Superb location / clean and staff are the nicest! K / Jasmin & Blair are always more than happy to help and genuinely nothing it is too much trouble for them!
loved living here it's so close to uni and tesco. i'm in a 2 bedroom flat with my friend and we both think that the manager Anna and the other manager Key are the nicest. I came here last june for a viewing with 4 family members and my friend without booking it in advance and Anna showed us all around and made drinks and answered all the questions, gave us advice and arranged for us to move in early. we went to CRM for a viewing earlier the same day and they refused to show all of us around as we were too many and only let me and my friend see that building so the experience we had with anna was much nicer
I like living here because of the team. The Managers Anna and Kay are always nice and try to help with whatever they can. The building looks old and cold and it's expensive but the location is good
I really enjoyed living here this year and I am definitely coming back following my placement year abroad! The Old Fire Station is in a great location and you have everything you need relatively close to your accommodation. K, Anna, Jasmin and Blair have been great as well and are always on hand to support you! I would definitely recommend living here!
I lived here for 2 years and it wasn't always great but since Anna started here everything changed. The building is old but it's clean now and she fix every problem you tell her and quick to. She's the most helpful and patient worker and even my parents from China loved her when they visited me because she is always smiling and said hello in Chinese to them and made us feel like home. The rest of the workers are nice to but Anna is the best.
That's perfect! i definitely recommend to live here and make nice experience
Just booked a room at The Old Fire station that was recommended by my friends who already leave there and love it! Had an amazing tour around the site and rooms and I must say that the team and facilities are second to none! Beautiful place / city center location / Amazing rooms - Counting down the days until check in! Thank you old Fire station team for making my decision so easy (K & Blair)! See you all in Sep!
I can honestly say that I have enjoyed my time at The Old Fire Station. It is based right in the City Center with Tesco and Greggs right outside. The reception staff are also all so lovely, Jasmin always has time to talk to me whenever I pass by the Reception. The Library is also a lovely part of The Old Fire Station.
This is a good apartment to live, clear environment and friendly staffs and worth and reasonable price.
it's close and Continent to travel around city by walk or bus.
I really love living here! I have lived here for 3 years now and have seen many management and reception teams. I can honestly say that these guys are the best yet and hope they all remain for some time to come. It's nice to walk into a clean reception too, I always see the staff cleaning!! Whenever I visit the reception I receive a warm welcome, I especially like that the 2 receptionists are starting to remember my name and room number.... Sometimes it's the little things that count. Being away from home can be difficult, especially with the stress of uni, it's nice to have a sympathetic voice from someone that actually knows me and cares about me. The maintenance man is really nice to talk to aswell, he's really down to earth. Even the house keeping staff I don't know her full name but I call her B, she freshens up our kitchen .... She's really lovely and hardworking so is the other lady. The Old Fire Station is a great place to live :)
I love living at the old fire station, the staff are lovely, especially Kay and Blair who always take the time to talk to the residents.
The staff were very enthusiastic. Blair often helps me with my room problems, and I'm grateful to him and the other staff.
A good place to live, near the town and Aston and BCU so easy to get to and from uni. It's a quiet place to live and everyone who works here is very friendly and always says hi when I walk past the reception. You feel welcomed and safe.
Overall, I have enjoyed my living experience at the Old Fire Station. Particularly due to the close proximity to my university. The staff have been very helpful and welcoming through out my stay here. In terms of dealing with any issues - it is dealt with promptly. Due to there not being too many total amount of tenants in comparison to other accommodations, the service they provide is detailed and better.
I have thoroughly enjoyed living at the OFS, the management team and front of house have been amazing, especially K, Blair, Jasmin and Anna. They make you feel right at home and are always super friendly and helpful straightaway! Requests are dealt with straightaway.
Lovely staff - much better management from Student Roost as opposed to other management in previous years!
The staff here are amazing and very helpful, the facilities are great, the room cleaning staff are great. I live here like home from home, the location is very good. Close to Tesco and Uni. Staff work every day, weekends and even the night. I especially like the office staff! I really like Blair and Ana, however everyone is really nice and helpful.
I have been staying at The Old Fire Station for a few months now and my experience has been simply the best. All staff are friendly, location is spot on and also facilities are great. If I have had any issues the staff here sort it out swiftly and nothing is too much trouble for them. I sincerely recommend this accommodation and I would definitely be staying here again if I wasn't in my final year of study.
The location and great staff make it an enjoyable place to stay
Great accomodation & good staff
I have thoroughly enjoyed my experience at the Old Fire Station. As a final year undergraduate it was important that my accommodation enabled me to have a good experience. This has been the case for the following reasons. 1. Proximity to university - This has been the main reason for me selecting the Old Fire Station as my place of residence for final year. 2. Responsiveness of site management - Staff have been very responsive to students which has been helpful throughout the year. 3. The staff - The whole team have been extremely pleasant at all times, this has extended from the manager Kay to the security guards. The team are a pleasure to speak to day to day which has also added to the pleasant experience I've had. Kay, Jasmine, Anna, Blair are a hardworking, enthusiastic and charismatic team who will be an asset to this residence for the foreseeable future.
After having lived in the Old Fire Station two years ago, I can confidently say that it has improved massively with the new management team! The location is fantastic, the flats are clean and the staff do everything they can to help you and are always friendly! Jasmine, Blair, Anna and K make a great team !
I have truly enjoyed my time staying at the Fire Station. The entire staff has been friendly, welcoming, and helpful. I honestly couldn't have asked for a better group of people to help ease my move to a new country. The Fire Station is located right in the city center close to public transit, bars, restaurants, and anything else you may need, but its compound like set up means that you don't have all the noise from traffic at night. If I weren't going to be traveling so much next year for fieldwork, I would definitely stay here next year.
Best Place to be! Friendly Staff / clean / safe and nothing is a problem here! Love it!!
Very safe, clean and comfortable rooms. Jasmine, K and Blair are extremely helpful at all times and make the accommodation as homely as possible.
K, Blair and Jasmine are very helpful and are always around. Couldn't think of somewhere better to live.
The staff are friendly and helpful, the accommodation is standard for student living and pretty spacious.
The Old Fire Station is a brilliant location in the heart of Birmingham and a stone's throw from Aston University. The management, reception staff and security are all kind and caring - exactly what you would like from your accommodation provider. They go above and beyond to look after you and to address any concerns you have during your tenancy. The accommodation is secure and has additional extras such as a spacious common room and a small gym. Overall I have loved my stay at the Fire Station and would recommend it to others who want to live in the heart of the city and campus.
