All the Answers You Need About Student Accommodation
What tenancy length do I need?
Some students choose to stay during the academic year, whilst others – particularly international students – require a tenancy that covers the entire year. You can also find student accommodation that is available for one or two terms, classified as a “short stay” on our search filters.
Should I stay in catered student accommodation?
This is totally up to you! Catered accommodation means you will be served meals at set times in a dining hall, and you’ll likely have access to fewer kitchen facilities than if you were to stay in self-catered accommodation.
What is a guarantor and do I need one?
A guarantor is a person who signs a contract to agree to pay your rent if you are unable to. Most university accommodation requires a guarantor, and this applies to both domestic and international students.
Will I need to pay a deposit on student accommodation?
Most likely, yes, you’ll need to pay a deposit. This will be refunded at the end of your stay as long as there is no damage to the room or property.
What bills will my rent include?
If you are staying in university-run accommodation or private halls, your rent should include any utilities such as electricity, gas, water, and internet. Students are not required to pay council tax, however you may need to fill in an exemption form so make sure you check with your local council.
What is purpose-built student accommodation?
Purpose-built student accommodation (PBSA) are residential buildings designed for students. They are often located close to campus, boast modern facilities, include all bills, and often have staff on site to assist residents.
Will my student accommodation be furnished?
Student accommodation is typically fully furnished. Your room should include at least a bed, clothes storage, desk and chair. You’ll likely need to bring things such as bedding and kitchen utensils, but we have a full list here of everything you’ll need.

So far the experience has been quite positive overall, generally maintenance have completed jobs within a day and flatmates are lovely.

Great place love it sooooo much
The accommodation is well-located, just a short train ride from the University of Birmingham, making the commute manageable. The rooms are are the perfect size, with enough space to study and relax. The staff are kind, helpful and approachable, which I really appreciate.
So far within my accomodation right now I am enjoying my time here it's really fun and clean the staff members r always a great help yes some things here and there could be improved however overall ita amazing
This is my second year at this accommodation and I love it here. The rooms are so spacious and lovely and the building is always clean and tidy. The staff here are also really helpful and kind. Great location for all university campuses as there is a train station opposite the building. They often have events downstairs which are really good for meeting new people, as well as the gym, study spaces and cinema area.
Choosing altura as my accomodation for the term year of my University was the best choice i made, the team here is very friendly and they are always there to help you at any given point and they are just brilliant at their work😁
I am loving it over here I am glad I got accomodation in altura as the staffs over here are very friendly and they are very helpful. The accomodation is always clean and neat they do check in all the time and keeps clean and neat . The security is awesome over here and as it is in the city centre it is also very good to travel around and explore Birmingham and from my perspective it is the safest and coolest accomodation

Booked quite late in the year so understandable price but could only book for the whole year which was quite expensive. Had no mop and bucket until half way through the year and couple machines in the gym were often out of order. Circuit laundry👎 Great social spaces and outside area, staff were friendly and helpful. Good location and allowed for independence👍
The overall cleanliness of the building is good , however not the shared kitchens. The staff help with problem solving but don’t go out of their way to stay updated. Wide range of activities and events held regularly aswell which is great for socialising. Very close proximity to the bullring, places to eat/hang out with friends etc. the price of the rooms isn’t very student friendly however.
I stayed here for the three years of my degree and I have to say it is one of the nicest Birmingham accommodations. I would recommend it to everyone! The staff is also really nice and the people in the accommodation are so friendly.

This accommodation is amazing to book when studying in Birmingham, the staff are so friendly and kind always making sure the student feel comfortable and making sure it is the perfect home for us whilst we are studying in Birmingham. They make sure that events are carried out regularly so that all students can get involved and socialise with each other, including celebrating different festivals, recently celebrated Diwali.

Honestly, it’s been a great experience so far, from the day I booked, till date. We have events happening every other week and they take good care of you and your wellbeing. I highly recommend this place, as it also has a great connectivity and facilities.

The building is amazing have a number of facilities to use and are all in good condition. Would recommend if they could clean the kitchen better though as the cupboards were slightly sticky and dirty and the microwave is old rusty and used would’ve proffered if we got a new one when moving in. Other than that the room is perfect nice amount of space and great layout I am definitely happy with my room

Great place to stay through your uni years, with super friendly staff who communicate with you on a daily basis if you have any problems at all, as uni years can be really stressful. Super clean place with guaranteed protection of your properties throughout your stay, free access to gym, dance studio and other activities. Highly recommended by myself and other University mates.
I have lived at Altura for 2 years now and it’s been the best 2 years of my life, the accommodation is so nice, I love spending the evening watching movies in the amazing cinema room and playing a few games of pool with friends. The staff are all sooo lovely and have helped me out with so much over the last 2 years, Lauren is always there to help out with anything, Mickey always makes me laugh when I’m having an off day, Claire is so quirky and funny I love all the events she puts on, Michaela is like my second mom she always gives such good advice, Alan the maintenance man can literally fix anything, Racheal keeps the place spotless so we can enjoy all the great facilities the accommodation has to offer, Mukhtar and Emmanuel the security guards keep the building safe for everyone and Umara who works weekends is always very helpful with any questions I have. I have rebooked my room for next year and cannot wait to meet my new flat mates, if I could live here forever I would!

Having stayed in previous student accommodation before I can confidently say Altura is the best Birmingham has to offer! The facilities are brilliant and always kept in very good condition. The staff are extremely polite and friendly and make you feel very at home. The staff are constantly arranging events to allow you to meet new people in the accommodation, making it great fun to live here.

The staff at reception are lovely and helpful beyond their job roles (i.e chats about future job opportunities and housing). Staff are always around and willing to help and have a chat. The place is lovely with lots of amenities and very modern, highly recommend.
In the 3 months I’ve been here I’ve had little to no problems, the staff have been amazing and the location is safe, friendly and provides easy access for a shops, entertainment and transport.

This accomodation is literally the best and that is me being honest. As a second year student I have been so fortunate to secure such an amazing Accomodation, in a perfect location. Within a walkable distance to all the BCU campuses and I’m pretty sure close to other unis this accom will really feel like home away from home. I have made lifelong friends here and will stay here for the next 2 years of my uni experience. The staff are literally my best friends and I adore them all so much. They’re so fast to respond to issues and are always up for a friendly chat! We’re a big familia. It’s literally amazing 🥲🥲
