All the Answers You Need About Student Accommodation

What tenancy length do I need?

Some students choose to stay during the academic year, whilst others – particularly international students – require a tenancy that covers the entire year. You can also find student accommodation that is available for one or two terms, classified as a “short stay” on our search filters.

Should I stay in catered student accommodation?

This is totally up to you! Catered accommodation means you will be served meals at set times in a dining hall, and you’ll likely have access to fewer kitchen facilities than if you were to stay in self-catered accommodation.

What is a guarantor and do I need one?

A guarantor is a person who signs a contract to agree to pay your rent if you are unable to. Most university accommodation requires a guarantor, and this applies to both domestic and international students.

Will I need to pay a deposit on student accommodation?

Most likely, yes, you’ll need to pay a deposit. This will be refunded at the end of your stay as long as there is no damage to the room or property.

What bills will my rent include?

If you are staying in university-run accommodation or private halls, your rent should include any utilities such as electricity, gas, water, and internet. Students are not required to pay council tax, however you may need to fill in an exemption form so make sure you check with your local council.

What is purpose-built student accommodation?

Purpose-built student accommodation (PBSA) are residential buildings designed for students. They are often located close to campus, boast modern facilities, include all bills, and often have staff on site to assist residents.

Will my student accommodation be furnished?

Student accommodation is typically fully furnished. Your room should include at least a bed, clothes storage, desk and chair. You’ll likely need to bring things such as bedding and kitchen utensils, but we have a full list here of everything you’ll need.

Crown Place is a great accommodation in terms of size, location and a great social environment. Wifi is good most of the time. En-suites are a nice touch. Personally I wouldn’t choose Crown again though, if you want a sense of freedom and that you are really living independently, don’t go here. The staff are mostly lovely, however, they have an overbearing sense of control over your daily movements and can lock you out of your room if you annoy them, they can be quite petty. You have to be well behaved on the most part I would say to be in Crown, the staff do constantly survey the lifts and again, do have an undue amount of control to lock you out of your rooms at anytime. They keys also act as a one and done so as soon as the door shuts it automatically locks, most universities seem to have cards where you tap it twice to lock to avoid constantly leaving your card (its so easy its a tiny piece of plastic). Staff do not always take this into consideration. Just a heads up;)

yh it's a lovely accom but management is awful, our TV wasn't fixed until january after multiple reports, and stuff just went missing and when we emailed they said yh that shouldn't have been taken come and collect it?? this happened to my tobacco, a diffuser that was in our kitchen and some battery fairy lights that were up. the flat was fined £50 because management claimed they could smell weed even though there was no evidence. there are also a LOT of "inspections", cleaners, maintenance and RAs are around all the time and doors don't lock from the inside so they actually just let themselves in, this was also reported and no apology.

For someone who seeks to become as involved with student life as possible, one should certainly consider choosing Crown Place as their choice of accommodation as the opportunities to meet people will be endless. Those who are in their second year or higher should be cautious however as there is a reason that the University of Liverpool guarantees its student accommodation to prospective students who firmly accept their offer to study there. It can be noisy at times, especially during fresher's week, though as long as you immerse yourself in the sociable aspect of uni life then for most this will not be a problem.

Had an amazing time at Crown place. It is the most social accommodation at Liverpool University! Loads of house parties but also very quiet in bedrooms due to insane insulation. Only advice would be to bring fans because they are very hot and book as soon as possible because Crown goes first! Full of gap years because of this.

A lot of bs reviews on here. Firstly it’s not eventhat hot, not anymore hotter than a usual home, and if it is then open the window. Secondly, it is social, it just depends on your flat mates so I don’t know why people are generalising the whole accom to be unsocial. Mine was very social. The location is also amazing as it’s perfect for a night out, 10-15 min walk and your in concert square or where the clubs are. The only con is the price as it doesn’t reflect much of what you get, but oh well it’s only for one year.

I cannot begin to explain how hot it is in Crown Place. Needed a fan in winter. Had to go home in summer. Constantly felt ill from the temperature. The shower doesn’t go remotely cold either, or even warm, it’s just boiling. The rooms themselves however are gorgeous. Really modern and spacious, would definitely recommend going for the 3/4 bed as the rooms are also bigger. + Modern + Spacious + Perfect location + Lovely staff + Brought food boxes round regularly with fresh fruit, veg and tea bags + Good organisation of social flat events + Very secure + Lots of cupboard space in the kitchens (around 3 each plus unlabelled spares for reference) + Sociable kitchen with the bar area - Uncomfortably hot - Very loud, even on weekdays - Wifi constantly off - Not an amazing amount of fridge / freezer space

Crown is pretty decent - clean, modern (not grotty as most uni halls are). Rooms spacious and comfortable with large desk, good storage and one of a few that is regularly cleaned in kitchen areas and bins emptied routinely too. Good campus location as never more than 5 minutes walk to lectures etc. Very secure, feels safe but this can be somewhat limiting, often feels like a residential school trip as restricted independence at times However, social life is quite poor. Intense security makes it very difficult to socialise so you're restricted to making friends with your flat and if you don’t share interests with them you can be left in sticky situation. Also noise complaints are frequent after 10pm as supervisors come and ask you to be quiet. The rooms can get very hot - haven’t used my radiator all year! Overall, you’d be better off at Greenbank or UniteStudents if you want more of a social uni experience where there is better atmosphere

I love love love love Crown place. I was scared of coming here because of everything I read but honestly, it was the best decision ever. The kitchen could be a bit cuter but I am not complaining. I love the rooms. If you are going to get a room, get 3/4 en-suite. It is beautiful and so spacious. I am searching for houses for next year and I don’t think I will ever find one as good as this. However, do bring your own fan. It gets very hot. Bring bathroom storage trolleys. I bought those suction cup holders for my shampoos and stuff because there was nothing else to hold them within the shower. You have more than plenty of storage for clothes so bring lots of hangers. The social areas could be better but as long as you try hard, you can make friends no matter what.

Crown is located in the city and in the centre of the university so your close to Liverpool one and finding your way around university isn’t an issue at all. However, social experience was a huge issue for me especially when first starting. If you a looking to make a big group of friends and have a good time socially at university I would not recommend crown at all. The student villages are a lot more ideal.

Talk of Crown being a poor social accommodation is rubbish. Several events are held by RA's throughout the year. Halloween/St Patrick's day/ Pizza nights etc. Ping pong/pool/Fifa tournaments with cash prizes. RA's are generally quite lenient and will only break up large parties. Pres are only shut down if noise complaints are received from other residents. Cleaners aren't great. Some are pleasant and friendly though. Reception staff are mostly miserable during the day. The guys on reception in the evenings are a laugh. Two of them (Paul and Neil if I remember correctly) are very welcoming and just really nice guys. Put up with our drunken ramblings on more than one occasion after losing our keys on a night out. Put in a little effort yourself and you'll have a great time here. Wish I could have stayed on tbh.

Great accommodation! I opted for a 3/4 bed with my own ensuite, its very spacious, huge desk, space for friends if you want them to come round, wardrobe space and a huge space to hang clothing and the bathroom is amazing. The kitchen is also pretty great, but make sure you have flatmates that actually clean up after themselves as it can get messy fairly quickly, the sofas aren't that comfy but it is a nice place to settle for the night and cook. First semester our cleaner wasn't very good, but we got a much better cleaner after Christmas after we complained: management is very efficient. Had a broken light and it was fixed the next working day. The social experience depends on how well you get on with your flatmates, I think Melville and Carnatic have a better social circle because Crown due to the flat system is very isolating at times if you don't get on with your flatmates very well. Can be very loud depends what floor your on, how noisy your flatmates are and closeness of kitchen.

Crown Place is perfectly located within walking distance of lecture halls, shops and clubs. The social life can be fantastic, though is highly dependent on your neighbours and flat mates. If you consider yourself as social and enjoy the night life Crown Place probably isn't for you. There are Resident Advisers who live within the accommodation whose job is to enforce strict rules and punishments should anyone break them. Any noise past 11PM and you'll have an RA walking into your kitchen demanding your name which will then be given to the warden who will impose fines and restrictions to you/your flat. If you however prefer the quiet life then I couldn't recommend Crown Place more. It's expensive but it's perfectly good value for money. Your experience here will highly depend on what type of person you are.

Although the halls has brand new facilities and super nice bedrooms and kitchens etc... you get treated like school kids. Often get RAs coming into the lounge around 11pm whilst you're all sat there nicely watching TV just to 'check up' like jesus we're all adults ffs. They also think they're gods gift to humanity and if they think you're being cheeky or rude to them, you're straight in the 'black book' and a subsequent meeting with the warden which often results in a fine. Also no partys after 11pm so get used to having short crap pre drinks. Crown place... honestly more like crown prison!

Before coming here, I saw people nicknaming Crown as "Crown Prison" because of the 11 o'clock noise rule. From my experience, this isn't really enforced - it's only if it's major noise and during freshers, they're really lenient. There's an RA in my flat and she has only ever spoken to us about noise once. I think the value for money is decent, obviously it's quite pricey, but the location is worth it completely. Nice sized rooms and flats. Can't hear noise through the walls, I've only ever heard noise from the room across from me and it's never been much.

I had a good time at Crown. Something important to get across is that it is not as social as the student villages. If you want to make a big group of friends, then you should go there. The security is very intense. My friend had his card tracked, and was also captured on CCTV. This was then all used in a disciplinary to fine him. It can make you feel a bit like you are living in a police state! It is in a good location though. The flats in my block all got on quite well. There could definitely be more mixing at the start to make things more social. I think there should be a big party in the foyer space.

Perfect location and nice building however the Resident Advisors (supervisors essentially) do not leave you alone. They're always snooping around looking for stuff to fine you with. Also the fact that you get charged £5 for locking yourself out is an absolute joke considering you're paying £134.50/week. As all the doors lock automatically, it's easy to feel isolated and difficult to gain that free social experience. The cleaners also demand that your kitchen is spotless all the time before they clean it. It shouldn't be too much of a problem but us students do have a lot of things going on so it's not always easy to clean up all the time but it's a bit annoying when you get meetings about a 'mess' which is so insignificant. It's a shame the university experience is severely affected by the resident advisors/management who are ruining the fun of being at university.

Live in a studio so everyone is quite isolated - there is no communal area for studios hence why not many people talk to each other! The cleaners change the bins every Tuesday and Friday, and the cleaners hoover down the corridor every so often (don't know if it's once a week or every fortnight). WiFi can go down every so often, eduroam isn't very reliable.

Great hall with ensuite facility, really close to city center. The halls management staff are there to help. Well established system of RAs who looks after students 24/7. Any issue within the flat are dealt with high priority. I may consider applying for RA job next year. I have heard of lock out charges, but didn't have any problem as my card is always in the mobile case

**Read this Review** Great Halls with variety of issues all related to the management. 1. £5 lock out fee every time electronic key card becomes locked behind your automatically locking door. Note that you will be the one who walks down to reception and back. 2. The staff who police the halls actually live in the halls. If you have particularly bad luck then one of these people will be living in your flat as one of your flatmates. No dirty dishes and music off at 11pm if this is the case. 3. Excessive Disciplinary system. Over react when someone calls music off at 11pm at your pres? Expect to attend a meeting with the warden in which you will possibly be fined and definitely belittled. The general feeling you will have when dealing with the disciplinary staff here at crown is one of nostalgia of your school days as you will be talked to as if you are not only stupid but roughly 15 years old. My advice is to go to Philharmonic Court or don't be afraid to go in private halls.

I'll keep it easy: Not a nice place to live. If you find it hard to meet new people don't come here. No music after 11PM which is literally no fun. Most CP staff have no people skills what so ever. You have to pay £5 if you get locked out your room. Residential Advisors ensure you have to wait another year until you properly feel like an adult. Every kitchen appliance I bought was confiscated or forbidden. Beanbags and a table were also confiscated/ forbidden. Posters in rooms were demanded to be taken down. People I know have been tracked on CCTV. If you like to conform to utter bollocks, this place is for you! Peace out (Y)

Crown Place is a nice modern hall. It probably isn't as social as Carnatic, but you just have to make an effort in Freshers Week. Take the opportunity to meet the flats on your floor when everyone is mixed up at the start. It is very safe and secure and the location is great.

Though there are minor problems at Crown such as super heat insulated rooms, dodgy WiFi and forgetting your room key (nothing a fan, ethernet cable and quick check can't fix), it has been amazing. Compared to the likes of the barely standing, antiquity that is Carnatic Halls, Crown Place can not be beaten in terms of convenience, room quality and safety. OK maybe you do need to swipe your card 6 times before you enter your room, but I'd rather that than having all of my stuff stolen. Things like being kept up late with noise or having to deal with smokers in your flat are easily dealt with in Crown which is helpful if you have a demanding course or asthma. I live in a large studio in a flat, which has a great kitchen and living room space, en suite and a double bed. The communal area is great too, with ping pong, pool and and Xbox One to play whilst waiting for your overpriced washing to finish. Overall it's going to be hard to move out of Crown next year!

Here's an insight into the infamous 'Crown Prison'- No music after 11... ikr! Residential Advisers can enter your flat and any time. Even the volume on your phone is too much as I learnt while playing FIFA... ikr! My flat mate even had her door knocked on at 2AM- This RA clearly was clearly hopeful of a late night booty call as they get very lonely living by themselves. If you leave so much as a pair of shoes in the hall you can expect a very formal piece of paper with a warning.. ikr! Cleaners seem under skilled... as they do not clean... ikr! Doors lock automatically so you're dignity is reduced to wearing a lanyard if you have no shame, and if you use a door stop it will be confiscated and locked away in reception... ikr! Reception staff are about as nice as Jeremy Clarkson when he doesn't get what he wants. You can expect to see the odd rat during you pleasant stay... believe me! Losing your key will leave you £5 out of pocket...aaaaaaaaaaaaand you wont make masses of friends. ikr

The worst place I have ever lived, not worth the money AT ALL. Everyone is horribly unsociable and stuck up and not willing to make new friends, the reception staff are vile and make you pay £5 if you lock yourself out of your room (which you will do). The cleaners do nothing and barely even wipe the surfaces for you, which is ridiculous when you're paying in excess of £135 a week, you're better off living at Carnatic, which is worse living conditions but the people there are brilliant - I spend most of my weekends commuting there just so I can have a decent weekend.

Great location, hard to socialise with people who aren't in your flat. Social space is ok, not enough room for all of our flat to sit on the sofa (5 of us) and not enough space on the counter to eat, and the stoold are really uncomfy and the wring height for the counter imo. Overall safety, cleaning and room sizes are good (plus ensuite), WiFi can be a bit s*** sometimes

Lovely rooms and great people, but the cleaning staff don't clean unless the room is already clean! Also security make sure no fun is had at all. Apart from this great rooms. Maybe a tad overpriced but a safe area.

I am very happy that I stayed at Crown Place, as the facilities and location are perfect. However, there are also a few issues despite paying £135+ a week: they are very happy to hand fines out for minor things such as locking yourself out even if you have a perfectly valid excuse and you are subject to a lot of rules to stay there, which can make you feel quite unsettled and that you are treading on eggshells. In terms of the communal areas and social spaces, I've found that my flat haven't used the living area much due to the sofas being so uncomfortable. People are very sociable though however, flats tend to mingle with each other which makes meeting people very easy!

Crown Place is amazing if you can afford it. It's central campus location means you're never more than a 10 minute walk from any lecture or a 15 minute walk to town.

It was really poor value for money, and in the bedrooms there were really pointlessly painted walls- mine was red and it just looked horrendous. Who wants to be trying to do uni work whilst staring at a red wall? The wifi was awful, even though I was in the room where the wifi connection was. The staff were ridiculously miserable - they need to be taught how to smile occasionally and I made many complaints about various things and the halls manager resolved absolutely none of them, after promising me meetings many times. The layout of the halls was shoddy, even to the point of when were moved in we were told that in a fire we could use the lift, but then next to the lift it states you should not use in a fire...hmmmm. The cleaner sometimes left the bins for days, not sure why. If you're going to Uni of Liverpool I'd recommend staying in carnatic or somewhere like that because you get a better social experience (some of the people in my flat were socially inept) and it's way less money

I haven't arrived at the hall yet. But that's what I feel after reading student reviews and done some research.

Best year of my life! Was put into a studio room which I thought would be a lonely experience but I was wrong! Slightly overpriced, almost like a mortgage but it was worth it. Location is perfect, close to everything; library, lecture halls, the guild, town centre! The internet is however, appalling, so slow so something needs to be done about that. Other than that, Crown Place was fab!

Great accommodation. However, everyone is locked into their little clusters and if you happen to be unlucky as I was and be in a cluster with a bunch of people you don't get along with then you'll find yourself having to find mates elsewhere and crown place isn't the place to do that considering everyone is stuck up their own a**es. When there is a flat party they'll actually only let people in who have been invited.. Flat parties are a very rare occurrence unless it's freshers obviously. So if you're a person looking to go out a lot in your first year and enjoy yourself then I doubt this is the place for you considering everyone who lives here probably only goes out once a week. Lastly the wifi is horrendous and if you live on a bottom floor you're pretty much doomed. There are some good things though, the accommodation is clearly top 5 in the whole of Liverpool taking into account X1 arndale/vine court etc and you'll never be without electricity or water for more than an hour.

I did not have a great experience in Crown Place, in fact, I moved out halfway through the year because I disliked it so much. If you're not a party animal or you don't really want to go out a lot and you want to actually sleep a whole night, I would recommend a studio rather than a room in a flat. I wish I had gotten a studio, looking back.

i really love crown place, I just think they where lots of issues during the year, which I think they should have sort out before we move in. Beside that I really don't like how they put people into the same flat I would have love to have someone from my culture in my flat as most of my flat mates use to exclude me and I felt like it was cause of my culture.

It's good but the building work is a bit annoying. Next year, that should all be fixed though.
