All the Answers You Need About Student Accommodation

What tenancy length do I need?

Some students choose to stay during the academic year, whilst others – particularly international students – require a tenancy that covers the entire year. You can also find student accommodation that is available for one or two terms, classified as a “short stay” on our search filters.

Should I stay in catered student accommodation?

This is totally up to you! Catered accommodation means you will be served meals at set times in a dining hall, and you’ll likely have access to fewer kitchen facilities than if you were to stay in self-catered accommodation.

What is a guarantor and do I need one?

A guarantor is a person who signs a contract to agree to pay your rent if you are unable to. Most university accommodation requires a guarantor, and this applies to both domestic and international students.

Will I need to pay a deposit on student accommodation?

Most likely, yes, you’ll need to pay a deposit. This will be refunded at the end of your stay as long as there is no damage to the room or property.

What bills will my rent include?

If you are staying in university-run accommodation or private halls, your rent should include any utilities such as electricity, gas, water, and internet. Students are not required to pay council tax, however you may need to fill in an exemption form so make sure you check with your local council.

What is purpose-built student accommodation?

Purpose-built student accommodation (PBSA) are residential buildings designed for students. They are often located close to campus, boast modern facilities, include all bills, and often have staff on site to assist residents.

Will my student accommodation be furnished?

Student accommodation is typically fully furnished. Your room should include at least a bed, clothes storage, desk and chair. You’ll likely need to bring things such as bedding and kitchen utensils, but we have a full list here of everything you’ll need.

Queens Gate provides great quality rooms for a decent price. I moved in during the pandemic and the staff were super helpful getting me checked in through this time. I can't comment on the social space and social experience due to the pandemic having an effect on these but the social common room looks inviting and well kept. There was a slight noise issue that came from a nearby building but after communicating this with management they were incredibly supportive and helpful with the situation. I can not fault the staff here, they are very helpful and respond to communications quickly. Additionally, there are permanent onsite student wardens who are also available to support you whenever you need it. The quality of goods (microwave combi oven, small fridge with freezer drawer and electric hob) are very good. You can use any type of pots and pans on the hob which helped with not having to purchase a whole new set of pots! WiFi is quick and you can connect up to 5 devices!

I have really enjoyed living in Queen’s Gate and I definitely recommend this! My room is very modern and spacious, the building is always tidy and clean. It is a small building so it is always quiet. It is the perfect choice for students who would like a quiet place to stay or young professionals! The location is really good in the city centre and the building is facing a park. The prices are very sensible for the quality that this accommodation offers. Members of staff are always very helpful and responsive to any queries.

Really enjoyed staying at Queensgate. Cut shorter due to the pandemic but everything from check in to check out was made easy. Communication was really good and makes everything easier! My studio was spacious with good amenities. Great location and nice monthly events which are also shared with other buildings. Really nice to get to know people.

Thoroughly enjoyed staying here, a lovely place with good-sized flats, especially if living alone, convenient location, close to all local amenities, good atmosphere and excellent communication with management. Would recommend!

Nice place to live. Building is not a large accommodation but studios are good for price and location is nice. Common room has been recently refurbished and I study a lot in there. The desk space is good with USB ports. Good internet and everyone seems friendly.

Queensgate is a nice place to stay. The building is not your typical large student accommodation. It's a small building which is nice because it's quiet and you get to know other residents. Staff are not on site but they have always responded quickly and sorted any issues for me which is really nice. They are really friendly.

Queens gate is a small property in a really nice location. Opposite a nice park and facing the water. The common room has been redecorated and provides a nice space to socialise with friends playing pool/watch tv or study whilst looking on to the park. My studio is modern and spacious, and great value for money. The property is quiet but do have monthly social events and free pizza! There is also limited parking on site which you need to book with your tenancy. It’s secure parking and price is reasonable considering you are in the middle of town! There is not on site reception however staff are visible at site and always respond very quickly to questions/queries. All in all a nice place to live.

Really enjoyed living at Queensgate. The location is really nice being opposite the park and facing the water. Lots around the city with good transport links. The accommodation is clean and quiet. Studios are really good sizes with good storage. Common areas are kept clean with the Common room freshly decorated.

Covid-19: Kept us updated and signage around the building. Common areas cleaned.

The rooms are of a comfortable size, come with a well fitted kitchen and a decently sized bathroom. The internet is quite fast for all uses, I have however had some issues with it in the past on certain devices. The building is also located directly opposite a park - which can provide a great view depending on room location - and maybe 5-10 minutes from the docks,. It's situated about 10-20 minutes from Solent, with nearby buses that go up to Uni Of, and 5 minutes from the NOCS for Marine Biology students in Uni Of. The common room, on the ground floor, is rather well furnished with a TV, pool table, and a space to plug in laptop charges for studying, and it is sometimes used for small events like pizza days, but there isn't much incentive to socialise in there otherwise. The laundry room is somewhat small with only two washing machines and dryers each for 64 residents.

It’s in quite a nice part of Southampton and only a 15-20 minute walk from Solent University and slightly less time to get to the High Street. The ocean is pretty much right across the park and there are parks all over the place. There are small parties that are organised by the management team and free pizza/doughnuts on occasion too. The social places aren’t that big but the common room has only just been refurbished and looks pretty cool! There is a secure place to store bikes and a car park for anyone that has a car with them. There is always a student warden on shift to answer any queries someone may have and delivers parcels everyday. All in all, Queens gate is a pretty solid place to be if you like a bit of walking and a quieter uni life.

Covid-19: Covid-19 has been addressed as emails have been sent out and doors/public places are constantly being cleaned by staff.
