Most helpful review

Glen Eyre Halls offers a friendly, social atmosphere with a range of room options to fit different budgets. It’s set in a peaceful, green area, making it a nice escape from campus bustle, and it’s about a 15–20 minute walk to the main buildings. Downsides include occasional WiFi issues, older blocks with variable maintenance, and higher prices for the newer rooms. Overall, it’s a solid choice if you want a lively community and don’t mind a bit of distance from campus.

Q
Hey guys! I'm wondering about the communal kitchens, 1. How many people usually share a kitchen? 2. Would we be allowed a mini fridge in our dorm room? Thanks!

All the Answers You Need About Student Accommodation

What tenancy length do I need?

Some students choose to stay during the academic year, whilst others – particularly international students – require a tenancy that covers the entire year. You can also find student accommodation that is available for one or two terms, classified as a “short stay” on our search filters.

Should I stay in catered student accommodation?

This is totally up to you! Catered accommodation means you will be served meals at set times in a dining hall, and you’ll likely have access to fewer kitchen facilities than if you were to stay in self-catered accommodation.

What is a guarantor and do I need one?

A guarantor is a person who signs a contract to agree to pay your rent if you are unable to. Most university accommodation requires a guarantor, and this applies to both domestic and international students.

Will I need to pay a deposit on student accommodation?

Most likely, yes, you’ll need to pay a deposit. This will be refunded at the end of your stay as long as there is no damage to the room or property.

What bills will my rent include?

If you are staying in university-run accommodation or private halls, your rent should include any utilities such as electricity, gas, water, and internet. Students are not required to pay council tax, however you may need to fill in an exemption form so make sure you check with your local council.

What is purpose-built student accommodation?

Purpose-built student accommodation (PBSA) are residential buildings designed for students. They are often located close to campus, boast modern facilities, include all bills, and often have staff on site to assist residents.

Will my student accommodation be furnished?

Student accommodation is typically fully furnished. Your room should include at least a bed, clothes storage, desk and chair. You’ll likely need to bring things such as bedding and kitchen utensils, but we have a full list here of everything you’ll need.

I stayed at Chamberlain Halls and it was quite nice. It was quiet which I requested for and the rooms were good too. I had enough space and my own bathroom, the kitchens were also massive which was handy for multiple people to cook at the same time.

I live in Glen Eyre Halls, and it is the worse experience in my life. I have had a noise issue from my next-door flatmate, and the Halls people failed to solve the issue. I contacted them many times, simply they did not do anything! I applied for a quiet room, and they allocated me to a room where animals cannot sleep in. Very noisy, phone calls from my next-door neighbour all night long. And the Halls don't care at all. Living at Glen Eyre affected my health, and study. My marks dropped because of that. The worse accommodation in my life. Arthur 2021.

Lived in J Block in 1978. Epic experience. I scoff at the idea of modern security staff. We did not need such nannying and would have smacked their heads. As for anything like the Covid false imprisonment, we would have burned the place down or simply walked.

I got assigned to South Hill, which had a 36-week contract that I didn't get to decide on (annoying, but ok). The staff were reasonably friendly, though the cleaners could get a little grumpy. The rooms themselves were actually pretty good, and SH had a solid heating system (once they turned it on mid-November -_-), and the available space for books and study materials was excellent. The bathroom was for the most part adequate, with one very glaring exception: the shower only has a fixed, mounted showerhead which drenches both you and the rest of the bathroom with equal abandon; the shower curtain is simply not adequate for such a temperamental shower. Its temperature control is also atrocious, firstly giving you the most frigid cold shoulder and then scalding you once you turn the handle even an inch beyond the 'sweet spot', which takes a while to find (like a very high-maintenance SO). The Ethernet was good, WiFi worse than at your Grandma's, & the kitchen was rarely cleaned well...

Rooms are dark and the rent you pay is extortionate!! Cleaning staff are rude and regularly just stop to gossip with each other in your kitchen despite it being where you live. Not homely at all. No common room or social spaces on site so you're basically confined to your room or kitchen which quickly becomes claustrophobic.

Very nice and green halls very close to uni. A bit far away from shops and pubs but very nice in the summer with good rooms. 90% of my good coursemates are from glen due to the social aspect of 2000 students walking the same route to uni and back. Free bus pass is a bonus when you can't be arsed to walk the 5 minutes back.

Really good room size in Old Terrace but not enough ovens in the kitchen, only one for ten people! We cope but it can be quite a stress! Really good atmosphere though and easy walk to uni and bus links

The problem with Glen Eyre accommodation is the fact that some blocks are significantly more modern than others, and you end up paying the same price for older accommodation if you're unlucky. I'm staying in Glen Eyre New Terrace ensuite. The bathroom is more of a washroom than a bathroom, it's all one level including the shower which causes leakages and the bathroom floor is constantly wet. There is a smell of damp which lingers across the accommodation. The heating is unpredictable, sometimes it's really hot and other times it doesn't work. Same with the shower, hard to adjust the temperature. The kitchen is a outdated, the ovens again are unpredictable and there aren't enough cupboards for all the flat mates. The corridor is again outdated, and there aren't many communal areas so flatmates are normally confined to their room. The cleaners are consistent though and friendly and internet is offered although it is extremely slow and keeps crashing. Overall disappointed.

I met my best friends in halls... Not in my actual flat, but Glen Eyre is so big that I found people I really connect with at the halls' bar on the first day, and 2 years later I'm still super close with the... I know I'm in the minority there but honestly, the sheer size of Glen Eyre means that you're bound to find people you love :)

POSITIVES-good variety of rooms - with/without washbasin, premium room etc -good value for money -cleaners do kitchen and communal areas -bar on site and common room -laundrette on site -10 min walk to main campus or there is a bus stop right outside taking you there in 2 minutes max! -good green areas for relaxing and scenery -small gym on site NEGATIVES -when you make glen eyre an accommodation type you can't be certain which building you'll be in and some are older and some are more modern (can determine better if chosen specific room type eg premium) -no catered option

Part of south hill which is considered part of Glen and I think my halls are great! We socialise with various blocks and all come together in the common room which is great for watching rugby or football or useful for birthdays and pre drinks! Cleaners in the kitchen 5 days a week who do a great job and a 10 minute walk from campus or a short bus ride away from all the nightlife! Rather sad to be leaving for private rented in the summer as love it here!
