A perfect location in my opinion as it’s not as central to the Edge where it’s always slightly louder. The building is regularly cleaned and issues to do with maintenance are resolved quickly. The door to our building often breaks and it takes a bit longer to he resolved but it isn’t a huge issue. The rooms are perfect and the kitchens are a very social space.

All the Answers You Need About Student Accommodation

What tenancy length do I need?

Some students choose to stay during the academic year, whilst others – particularly international students – require a tenancy that covers the entire year. You can also find student accommodation that is available for one or two terms, classified as a “short stay” on our search filters.

Should I stay in catered student accommodation?

This is totally up to you! Catered accommodation means you will be served meals at set times in a dining hall, and you’ll likely have access to fewer kitchen facilities than if you were to stay in self-catered accommodation.

What is a guarantor and do I need one?

A guarantor is a person who signs a contract to agree to pay your rent if you are unable to. Most university accommodation requires a guarantor, and this applies to both domestic and international students.

Will I need to pay a deposit on student accommodation?

Most likely, yes, you’ll need to pay a deposit. This will be refunded at the end of your stay as long as there is no damage to the room or property.

What bills will my rent include?

If you are staying in university-run accommodation or private halls, your rent should include any utilities such as electricity, gas, water, and internet. Students are not required to pay council tax, however you may need to fill in an exemption form so make sure you check with your local council.

What is purpose-built student accommodation?

Purpose-built student accommodation (PBSA) are residential buildings designed for students. They are often located close to campus, boast modern facilities, include all bills, and often have staff on site to assist residents.

Will my student accommodation be furnished?

Student accommodation is typically fully furnished. Your room should include at least a bed, clothes storage, desk and chair. You’ll likely need to bring things such as bedding and kitchen utensils, but we have a full list here of everything you’ll need.

Generally a good space to live. On the expensive side, but with the payment comes the student village in Endcliffe, internet/electricity/water/etc. included, maintenance and cleaning crew, as well as access to events in The Edge, which also has a study space that is accessible all the time - although it is admittedly small and only comes with a few computers. There is a laundrette, which is usually full but is always open so can be used even at late/early hours to avoid the traffic. In my experience the maintenance crew have been good at fulfilling requests, but can sometimes take a very long time. I dealt with an issue of black mould and put in a request when I moved in, as well as two months later, and only got it responded to about two weeks after the second request. However, other times I've had requests answered on the same day/almost immediately.

Overall it’s completely satisfactory, in a good location but a little far from the good bus stops. Rooms are reasonably spacious however £170 a week is far too expensive for what is given, especially compared to student housing in the area as there are many nice houses in improved locations offering nicer furnishing with more space at the same or less price for a contract for an entire year, which also takes away the drawbacks of student housing such as circuit laundry and constant noise due to a complete lack of soundproofing from outside making it not infrequent to be woken up in the middle of the night. However, the social opportunities for a first year student aren’t nearly the same anywhere else so that’s really what you’re paying for.

I’ve lived in Millstone for the first semester so far. Its location at the bottom of Endcliffe was ideal for me, since I didn’t want to pick quiet accommodation but didn’t necessarily want to be right in the centre of the noise. It’s very close to the Edge, Village Store and laundry facilities which makes for an easy trip to get groceries or study. The cleaning service is every two weeks, which I’ve found is more than enough, and the kitchen is modern and spacious. As a flat of eight, we haven’t had any issues with cupboard/fridge/freezer space, or with being unable to use the facilities when you want, since there is two of everything except the sink. The bedrooms are also large, with good storage space including under-bed storage and plenty of shelves and drawers, and a large desk that makes it easy to study on. Overall, I think Millstone is a great accommodation and I’ve been really enjoying my time here so far.

The kitchen and bedrooms are a good standard containing everything you need. The location is good, very sociable but not right in the middle where it may be too noisy. Cleaned every 2 weeks to a good standard and maintenance always comes within a week if you have any issues. The Edge is a great social space to hang out with friends and the social life is very good. Everyone is very friendly and overall, I am very happy I chose to live in Millstone. I find it takes a while to connect to the WiFi but it usually works.

I've lived in university accommodation for a semester, and it's been a mixed experience. On the plus side, the location is excellent, just a short walk from campus, and the living area is spacious and inviting. The staff are friendly and responsive to maintenance issues. However, the rooms feel a bit outdated for the money, which can be uncomfortable. Noise from fellow residents outside the building can also be distracting at times. Overall, it's a decent place to live for university, with some room for improvement, including better parking provisions to say I pay so much for it.

Located at the bottom of the Endcliffe village so it’s generally quieter than the other accomodation which is good for sleeping or studying but also less social than other areas more central. It’s close to the edge which is where to social and study areas are and near the village store. The kitchen is very modern and a good size with a nice view and has parking right outside. It’s close to the main road which is good for Ubers and getting food delivered. The cleaning every 2 weeks is good.

Bedrooms and kitchens are standard and nice with a good view. Communal areas are cleaned every 2 weeks. It’s about a 20 minute walk to the SU and is 5 minutes from Endcliffe park and Sheffield Botanical garden but can be quite a walk to the city centre. Shops are around 15 minutes away. Social spaces are all by the edge (3 min walk away) and is quieter than most buildings in Endcliffe but also a bit less socialable. Any issues are usually fixed in a week by maintenance.

Millstone, being a little further away from the Edge (though still only a 1-2 minute walk) means the mania and noise that you get in the centre can be avoided, although there is still a lively/social feel to the place. It overlooks a nice green and the pond, and both the rooms are kitchen are really well-equipped and modern, as well as being much more spacious than some of the other blocks. There are several bus stops and permit car parks, and being at the bottom of Endcliffe, many Millstone residents tend to take the bottom route (Clarkehouse Rd) to get to uni, avoiding the deadly Endcliffe Crescent hill. Only downside is that none of Millstone has a lift...

Personally, I think Millstone is a great accommodation option for anyone who wants to stay somewhere quiet. It's not very social at all as a lot of medicine students and other students who are in intensive courses tend to stay here (and I'm guessing people who are just more introverted). As someone who was just looking for an accommodation building in Endcliffe where I can meet people and make good friends, this isn't the best building. You're still close by to other buildings and the Edge, so that's a plus point, but there's never anything happening within Millstone. I'm always at some friends flat/building. People can be nice, but most of the building does avoid each other and I find most people don't want to talk. Most uni students haven't even heard of Millstone before. The views from bedrooms is very pretty though and for people with sleep problems, the peace and quiet is probably quite helpful!

The location is lovely and quiet however there are not a huge amount of transport links to the city centre and the university campus. Millstone is a little further from the edge than other buildings meaning a longer walk to get to laundry facilities and the shop on site. There is an hourly bus that is on the Millstone side of Endcliffe however to get to the more frequent bus it is just under a 10 minute walk up a very steep hill. The building itself is perfect, the rooms are a great size, the wet rooms can be a bit inconvenient but you quickly adjust. Any issues are fixed by maintenance within a week or two depending on urgency.

The apartment itself is good, the kitchen and living area is also spacious enough with the appliances and furniture you'd need. The location is okay, slightly further away from the University than I'd prefer, but allows for a nice walk each day. The internet is spotty, with connection randomly dropping out every now and then, and taking a couple minutes to connect when I start up my PC or laptop. It's near enough to the Edge for their facilities to be easy access, and the cleaners do a decent job, although your experience with cleanliness in the living space and kitchen will be reliant on flatmates. A large issue when moving in is the lack of a lift. if you're on the 3rd or 4th floors, it can be a challenge to carry the heavier boxes up all of the stairs. The apartment buildings themselves are right next to bins, so easy garbage disposal, and the higher floors have a nice view of the pond and general landscape. Overall a decent experience.

Endcliffe halls are not the best in terms of facilities but they’re fantastic for social life. They’re quite far from the uni but they’re in a lovely area and I wouldn’t have wanted to be anywhere else in my first year.

Could have done with a cleaner coming more regularly than once every two weeks. The idea of having Residents Engagement Program is such a good experience and a great way to get involved in uni life. The quality of the accommodation is very good and much nicer than all the other Halls I saw at other universities. Although it is expensive, it is worth the money.
