All the Answers You Need About Student Accommodation
What tenancy length do I need?
Some students choose to stay during the academic year, whilst others – particularly international students – require a tenancy that covers the entire year. You can also find student accommodation that is available for one or two terms, classified as a “short stay” on our search filters.
Should I stay in catered student accommodation?
This is totally up to you! Catered accommodation means you will be served meals at set times in a dining hall, and you’ll likely have access to fewer kitchen facilities than if you were to stay in self-catered accommodation.
What is a guarantor and do I need one?
A guarantor is a person who signs a contract to agree to pay your rent if you are unable to. Most university accommodation requires a guarantor, and this applies to both domestic and international students.
Will I need to pay a deposit on student accommodation?
Most likely, yes, you’ll need to pay a deposit. This will be refunded at the end of your stay as long as there is no damage to the room or property.
What bills will my rent include?
If you are staying in university-run accommodation or private halls, your rent should include any utilities such as electricity, gas, water, and internet. Students are not required to pay council tax, however you may need to fill in an exemption form so make sure you check with your local council.
What is purpose-built student accommodation?
Purpose-built student accommodation (PBSA) are residential buildings designed for students. They are often located close to campus, boast modern facilities, include all bills, and often have staff on site to assist residents.
Will my student accommodation be furnished?
Student accommodation is typically fully furnished. Your room should include at least a bed, clothes storage, desk and chair. You’ll likely need to bring things such as bedding and kitchen utensils, but we have a full list here of everything you’ll need.

Love Endcliffe Vale, it's nice and quiet but still close to everything you need, washing machine on site, ground floor has a huge kitchen and some upstairs flats have balconies. Lots of staircase space in the rooms. I'll be sad to leave!
Hello and thank you for your review, we really appreciate it. It's lovely to read you have enjoyed your stay here. We want students to have the best experience possible while staying with us. Best wishes, Sharon
No major complaints besides the fact that there are 2 toilet cubicles within 1 bathroom so it's a bit like a public bathroom
Hello and thank you for your review of Endcliffe Vale flats. We really appreciate it. We do offer en suite accommodation if sharing a bathroom is not your thing. If you choose standard accommodation you will never share a bathroom with more than 6 people and the communal areas are cleaned every 2 weeks. Best wishes, Sharon
Decent accomodation, had everything I needed. 20-30 minute walk to university. Nice warm showers, my flat has a pretty awesome balcony.
Hello and thank you for your lovely review of Endcliffe Vale flats. This is a great location which is close to all the facilities that Ranmoor/Endcliffe offers from The Edge bar to The Ridge fitness suite. If you choose standard accommodation you won't be sharing a bathroom with more than 6 people and the communal areas are cleaned every 2 weeks. Best wishes, Sharon
Location is near stunning green spaces such as endcliffe park which is a 7 minute walk away. The edge bar is located a 2 minute walk away from the flats and is a great social hotspot with student friendly prices and a bubbly atmosphere. Village store is also conveniently parked a 3 minute walk away for any emergency shops. Despite being a long walk to the city centre, it’s a 25 minute commute and there are bus stops conveniently scattered around the local streets.
Hello and thank you for taking the time to leave us a review, we really appreciate it !. I am so happy to hear you like Endcliffe Vale flats. It is in a great location and right in the heart of the Ranmoor/Endcliffe site. The walk to main campus is, as you said around 25 minutes but it's an easy walk along well lit, main roads and there is a cycle path and secure bike storage across the university. Best wishes, Sharon
Decent accommodation. It's the cheapest uni owned accommodation and you get what you pay for. Located in a safe area but it's quite a walk to the uni, shops and the centre. Rooms are big with good storage and a nice desk but the bed is uncomfortable so bring a mattress topper!! The toilets are awful compared to shared bathrooms at other unis. There are two cubicles right next to each other, not really any privacy at all. If you care even a little bit about having your own bathroom, it's probably worth the extra money for an ensuite. But the showers are good. Kitchen is nice, has everything you need, although not great for socialising as there are no sofas. Noise isn't much of a problem through the week, only on the weekend which is to be expected. All in all, it's okay. If you want to save some money, it's worth it.
Hello and thank you for your review of Endcliffe Vale flats, we really appreciate it. It's a 25 minute walk to main campus along a well lit, busy route. There is a cycle lane and secure bike storage across the university. I am sorry to hear you are unhappy with the toilets. You will never be sharing a bathroom with more than 6 people and the communal areas are cleaned every 2 weeks. If this scenario make you uncomfortable then maybe as you say, consider an en-suite room. If there are any maintenance issues then the Customer Services team are on hand to help acs-customerservices@sheffield.ac.uk. The Ridge and The Hub are places where you can attend loads of events that the Residence Life team arrange and many of these are free. You can also book the Green Room where you can watch a film, play a game or just chat with friends. Best wishes, Sharon
A bit of a walk to the Morrisons and uni, clean, nice big kitchen
Hello and thank you for taking the time to leave us a review, we really appreciate it. Broomhill shopping centre is about 10 minutes walk from Ranmoor/Endcliffe. You will find Morrisons, Sainsburys and Tesco there along with cafes, bars and loads of charity shops. There are also chemists, a post office and hairdressers/barbers so it's a really useful place to have nearby. All communal areas are cleaned every 2 weeks but our lovely cleaning team will not clean bedrooms, this is your space to clean as you wish !. Best wishes, Sharon
great area, quiet but still able to meet people and have a good time. best value for money, better than an ensuite
Hello and thank you for your review. I am happy to hear you like Endcliffe Vale on the Ranmoor/Endcliffe site. It's a great option if you do not mind sharing a bathroom. You will never be sharing with more the 6 people and all coomunal areas are cleaned every 2 weeks. Best wishes, Sharon
- In a lovely part of the village - like the rest of wndcliffe and ranmoor it is a 30 minute walk from the uni, but good bus services - rooms are a good size with lots of storage (big wardrobe and draws and under bed storage) -bed itself is uncomfortable and rather rickety and creaky -kitchen is also a decent size with good storage -table only seats 6 and there’s 8 in a flat, also no other seating or social spaces like other accoms that have sofas - induction hobs only work if there is only one on at a time. Useless if using two pots at the same time -WiFi drops out constantly (get an Ethernet cable -showers are rather small but still pretty good pressure etc -any flat parties or gatherings tend to happen in other accoms due to the lack of additional social spaces - maintenance takes forever, we’ve had a broken toilet for two weeks now and no one has sorted it - is a decent option and better value for money compared to other accoms, but definitely not without its faults
Hello and thank you for your review of Endcliffe Vale flats. It's a pretty easy walk to the main campus along well lit, busy streets. There is a cycle path and secure bike storage across the university if students wish to bring a bike. While this may be a cheaper option on the Ranmoor/Endcliffe site maintenance should always be addressed and the Customer Services team can assist with this acs-customerservices@sheffield.ac.uk. There is lots of space at The Hub and The Ridge social areas and you will often find Residence Life holding events there, many of these are free too !. You can also book the Green Room where you can watch a film, play a game or just hang out with friends. Best wishes, Sharon
Overall really good, great kitchen space and rooms are comfortable. Wi-Fi can sometimes be slow, and occasionally the toilets, showers etc block up or break, although maintenance is always very quick to fix. The only downside is there are no sofas so difficult to socialise in the kitchen beyond cooking and eating together. Bedrooms don’t have the best natural light either, although depends on the side of the building you are on! Overall a great choice for accommodation!
Hello and thank you for your review of Endcliffe Vale flats. I am sorry to hear you had some maintenance isues but glad they were resolved quickly. The Hub and The Ridge are just a short walk away and you can meet up with friends here if you wish. You will often find Residence Life there holding events you can join in with and many of these are free. The Edge bar has loads of themed nights too. The Ranmoor/Endcliffe site has many trees and green open spaces to enjoy but sometimes that can cause a bit of loss in natural light but it's a small price to pay for such a lovely site !. Best wishes, Sharon
Decent accommodation with regards to price and cleanliness, the eduroam wifi is a bit slow and unreliable but it is super good, and close the edge bar, shops and fairly close to uni
Thank you for your review on Endcliffe Vale flats. We really appreciate it. Ranmoor/Endcliffe is a great site with loads of places to hang out with friends and the Residence Life team hold loads of events in The Hub and The Ridge that you can attemd and many of these are free. It's a 20-25 minute walk to the main campus but it's a pretty easy walk along well lit main roads. There is a cycle lane and secure bike storage across the university if you wanted to bring a bike. Best wishes, Sharon
Decent enough accommodation at a good price.
Thank you for taking the time to submit a review, we really appreciate it !. Best wishes, Sharon
amazing social experience in the endcliffe village, vale is the cheapest and definitely good value for money

Really nice , further away from the edge so it’s quieter but only a min walk away. Also nice view of the pond if you’re looking onto that side. Good size kitchen just no sofas which is the only downfall. Also good for flat parties as it’s shared bathrooms . Quite a few have balconies aswell
Hello and thank you for your review on Endcliffe Vale flats, we are very grateful. It's lovely to hear you have had such a positive experience with your accommodation. This block is in a great location in the heart of the Ranmoor/Endcliffe site. The communal areas are cleaned every 2 weeks and this includes the kitchens and bathrooms. Best wishes, Sharon
I would say great value for money because the kitchen is great, with a balcony, it's quite quiet and we have washing machines in the building, so we, unlike most other flats, don't have to go all the way to the edge to queue for washing, which is very helpful! It could have been cleaner when we moved in and there could be more fridge/ freezer space for 8 people, as well as the fact that there are no sofas in the kitchen, which would be nice. Maintenance is mainly dealt with quickly, although some issues that have apparently been sorted are still a problem (such as the shower flooding). The WiFi is good when it works, but you have to connect twice for it to actually connect. Overall I am very glad I got vale as my accomodation as it is big, social and very convenient!
Hello and thank you for your review about Endcliffe Vale Flats, we really appreciate it. It's great to hear that you were happy with your accommodation choice. This is a great location on the Ranmoor/Enbdcliffe site. Best wishes, Sharon
Very good value for money, my only complaint is that there are no sofas in the kitchen and so the only place you can sit is at the kitchen table I’ve never had any issues with the shared bathroom and never had to wait for the shower and they are always cleaned In terms of distance to uni it is a tad far like a 20-35 minute walk depending on your university building but it keeps you really fit
Hello and thank you for your review of Endcliffe Vale flats, we are very grateful. I am glad to read you have had a positive time living here. It is a great location on the Ranmoor/Endcliffe site. The site is a maximum of 30 min walk from main campus but it's along well lit, main roads. There is also a cycle path and secure storage across the university if students decide to bring a bike. The commute is closer than many other universities but as you say, it's good exercise !. Best wishes, Sharon
Brilliant value for money, the services provided are excellent quality and attentive to needs. Vale flats are located in a quieter and less crowded area of endcliffe village.
Hello and thank you for your review on Endcliffe Vale flats, we are very grateful. It's lovely to hear you are happy with your accommodation. We aim to give students the best expereince possible while they live with us. Best wishes, Sharon
Being within Endcliffe is brilliant as you have access to lots of facilities but Endcliffe vale flats are towards the bottom so if you are looking for a quieter area, its perfect. It also has its own set of washing machines so you don't have to walk all the way to the edge to do your washing. The one main downside is a lack of a nice social space within the flat as the kitchen just has a table. However aside from that it is great value for money.
Hello and thank you for your review on Endcliffe Vale flats, we are very grateful. It's great to hear you are happy with your accommodation, it is a great location. Best wishes, Sharon
Decent student accommodation, shared toilets and showers aren’t great and kitchen is big enough for everyone. Would have liked a couple sofas for the kitchen area instead of a table and some chairs
Hello and thank you for your review on Endcliffe Vale flats, we really appreciate it. If you book any of our standard accommmodation you will never be sharing with more than 6 people and the communal areas are cleaned every 2 weeks. We have lots of en suite accommodation available as well. The Hub and The Ridge have loads of space where you can meet up with friends and you will often find Residence Life there as they host loads of events over the year and many of these are free !. The Edge bar has loads of themed nights too. Best wishes, Sharon
Good accommodation for a lower price point. Not enough communal areas e.g. flat doesn't have any sofas for socialising. Shared bathroom facilities are manageable and the room is quite nice and surprisingly spacious
Thank you for leaving us a review, we really appreciate it. Although this type of accommodation does not have any social areas as such students are free to use The Hub and The Ridge and there is The Green Room within The Hub. This a bookable space where you can get together with friends to watch a film, play a video game or just have a chat. This is a very popular block to live in with a great location and in our shared bathroom accommodation you will never be sharing a bathroom with more than 6 people. It's a great option at a cheaper price. Best wishes, Sharon
toilets feel like public bathrooms, showers are tiny - a lot of people say it’s a social accommodation but that’s based solely on whether you get a good flat. the area around is absolutely lovely even if the the accommodation is not! kitchens fairly big and useful, has induction hobs so be aware
Thank you for your review! I’m glad to hear that you’re enjoying the lovely surroundings of Endcliffe Vale Flats. The green spaces and peaceful atmosphere really make it a unique place to live! Endcliffe Vale is one of our most popular accommodations and regularly receives positive feedback for its community vibe and location. I appreciate your comments on the facilities. Our cleaning teams work hard to keep everything in top shape for everyone’s comfort. It’s great to know that you’re finding the kitchen spacious and useful! The majority of our accommodation at Ranmoor & Endcliffe benefits from induction hobs, and we encourage all students to bring compatible cookware in our communications. As you mentioned, the social experience can vary, but one of the great things about booking with us is the option for self-selection. This is how the majority of our students will secure accommodation and the system allows students to view web profiles and choose accommodation alongside like-minded people, fostering the welcoming community atmosphere Endcliffe Vale is known for. If there’s ever anything more you need or further feedback you’d like to share, please feel free to reach out to our Customer Service team at acs-customerservices@sheffield.ac.uk. We’re always here to help! Danny 🧔🏻
Love the area but bit far from campus, wifi is always at two bars, social place
Hello and thank you very much for taking the time to send in your review. Our Ranmoor/Endcliffe campus is around a 20 minute walk from the main campus. In comparison with other universities the campus is quite close but we do also offer accommodation in the city for students that prefer to be closer to the main part of the university. Any issues with WiFi can be reported and we will do our best to help with any issues as soon as possible. There is always something going on around the campus and the Residence Life team hold loads of events over the year and many of these are free of charge !. Best wishes, Sharon
Great flatmates, clean kitchen and communal areas, far away enough from the edge to be peaceful and get a good night's sleep.
Thank you for your review! I’m so pleased to hear that you’re enjoying your time in Endcliffe Vale Flats. It sounds like you’ve got a great setup with a peaceful atmosphere and clean communal areas - plus, having good flatmates really makes all the difference! Being close enough to the Edge while still enjoying some quiet time is definitely one of Vale’s perks. If you ever need anything or have more feedback, feel free to reach out to our Customer Service team at acs-customerservices@sheffield.ac.uk. We’re here to help! Best wishes,Danny 🧔🏻
the past 3 weeks I have been here, I have enjoyed the university experience so much with amazing lecturers, events and people.
Thank you so much for your review. We really appreciate it !. It's great to hear you are having a great time in Sheffield. It's a great university and city. Best wishes, Sharon
Amazing for socialising but can also keep to yourself. Cleaning is regular and location is great
Thank you so much for taking the time to leave a review - it really means a lot to us! Endcliffe Vale is one of our most popular properties, and it’s fantastic to hear that you enjoyed the balance between socialising and having your own space. I’m also glad that the regular cleaning and convenient location added to your experience. We’re really happy we could create an environment that worked well for you! Thanks again for sharing your thoughts. Best wishes,Danny 🧔🏻
Rarely cleaned. Mould and mildew. Nosiy. Rats.
fun people, gd location (botanical gardens), fairly spacious kitchen which is gd for parties, pretty views from windows and nice rooms! wld recommend, have met some great people
Big kitchens with large corridors and rooms. Seems like these halls have bigger communal areas than most other accommodations. Have had some great nights out and good flat parties. Shared bathrooms are perfect for big flat parties as you can lock your room. Only problems we have had so far is leaking from the balconies above which hasn't been fixed, blocked drains and broken pipes which causes leaking. Apart from that everyone loves living here and its only a 25 minute flat walk to the student union.
So s*** cleaners only come once every two weeks kitchens are all disgusting
Poor quality furniture And then blamed when it’s breaks. Very expensive too
All inclusive halls for first years, right next to the edge bar which is amazing for socializing/nights out. Always has events on.
Had some good times, had some better times. Had some times.
Was expensive but good, great vibes
Older block in Endcliffe but just as good fun
Being the cheapest accommodation in Endcliffe I suppose I can't complain too much, it's in a great spot and we were lucky enough to have a balcony. But otherwise, almost every flat I've spoken to has had problems with the showers and toilets, maintenance seem to be reluctant to sort out these problems most times, which didn't help. We have large kitchens but no common space or anywhere to sit apart from at the table, which was sometimes (most times) a nuisance. But in my opinion, it is one of the nicest places to live, we have stunning views and decent sized rooms compared to some of the other buildings.
Just generally nice people and you save a lot of money by going shared bathroom, plus the fact some of the flat's have a balcony!
Its cheaper than all the other accommodation in Endcliffe but you get what you pay for. The block is just not quite as modern and flash as the rest of the student village. Socially its good and its convenient for taxis/deliveries. The rooms and kitchen are plenty big enough, though there is no wifi in the kitchen which is the only social area you have. The walls are also very thin. Also, I think a lot of the flats are full of gap-year students so it depends on what type of crowd you wanna be around
Great people, great atmosphere, it's just great!
Love Vale- cheapest accommodation but I haven't met anyone who dislikes it- better than a lot of the others!
Having such a good time living here, everyone is so much fun and the rooms are really cosy
Location loses a star as it is fairly close to the road, but being surrounded by trees gives it an almost country feel. Hall management was poor, the year I lived there we were stuck with a bunch of weed smokers who insisted on smoking inside rather than the balcony. No one likes stinking of weed and nothing of substance was done, an ignored warning isn't sufficient. Cleaning on the whole was good, however if you end up living with filthy housemates the cleaners will draw the line and refuse to enter. Social space was limited to the kitchen, however, these halls have their own private wash room, so no queueing at the general accommodation ones. Social experience has very few stars to to the stoners, but I was unlucky. It's a good location if you want to be picked up by taxi to go into town, there is a bus stop outside which picks up regular to get into the city centre and its close to the accommodation hub which hosts numerous nights for fresher's
Apart from my lovely flatmates, I hated living here. It was extremely loud every night and security did nothing, even when called/emailed a few nights in a row. If you're doing a course with a lot of 9am starts, I strongly recommend finding somewhere else.
Security is well managed and common rooms are well maintained
Expensive with no cheaper alternative for the less well off students. The facilities are good nonetheless PROVIDED you can afford them.
Would not have lived anywhere else, flatmates are like family and even though we don't have sofas we have had so many good nights starting/ ending in the kitchen.
