All the Answers You Need About Student Accommodation
What tenancy length do I need?
Some students choose to stay during the academic year, whilst others – particularly international students – require a tenancy that covers the entire year. You can also find student accommodation that is available for one or two terms, classified as a “short stay” on our search filters.
Should I stay in catered student accommodation?
This is totally up to you! Catered accommodation means you will be served meals at set times in a dining hall, and you’ll likely have access to fewer kitchen facilities than if you were to stay in self-catered accommodation.
What is a guarantor and do I need one?
A guarantor is a person who signs a contract to agree to pay your rent if you are unable to. Most university accommodation requires a guarantor, and this applies to both domestic and international students.
Will I need to pay a deposit on student accommodation?
Most likely, yes, you’ll need to pay a deposit. This will be refunded at the end of your stay as long as there is no damage to the room or property.
What bills will my rent include?
If you are staying in university-run accommodation or private halls, your rent should include any utilities such as electricity, gas, water, and internet. Students are not required to pay council tax, however you may need to fill in an exemption form so make sure you check with your local council.
What is purpose-built student accommodation?
Purpose-built student accommodation (PBSA) are residential buildings designed for students. They are often located close to campus, boast modern facilities, include all bills, and often have staff on site to assist residents.
Will my student accommodation be furnished?
Student accommodation is typically fully furnished. Your room should include at least a bed, clothes storage, desk and chair. You’ll likely need to bring things such as bedding and kitchen utensils, but we have a full list here of everything you’ll need.

Very clean and modern. Huge kitchens and well kept rooms. Good green spaces. The Ridge being open 24/7 is great and it’s a good social space.

Generally pretty good value for money with ensuite. Big kitchens which are a massive positive.
Hello and thank you for your lovely review of our Kinder accommodation. It's great to hear you like your room and flat. Best wishes, Sharon
In a flat for 6 people, the bedrooms are very good, however the kitchen is small for cooking.
Hello and thank you for your review on our Kinder accommodation. I am sorry to read that you felt the kitchen was too small. We do try and provide enough facilities but I am sure you will understand with the space available it's not possible to put loads of ovens and hobs in. Hopefully not everyone will need to cook at exactly the same time !. I am glad you liked the bedroom though. Best wishes, Sharon
The experience is what you make of it, there are options for events and community yet you need to choose that for yourself. Rooms and bathrooms are good, i was pleasantly surprised with the storage space. Kitchen/living space is good just need to work it out with the people in your flat for chores and expectations
Hello and thank you for review of our Kinder accommodation, we are very grateful. The Residence Life team do hold loads of events over the terms and many of these are free to attend. I am happy to read you liked your accommodation. The rooms are designed to give you as much space and storage as possible and large items such as suitcases can be stored under the beds, out of the way. Best wishes, Sharon
Good but very far and not great wifi
Hello and thank you for your review on Kinder flats. The accommodation is about 25 minutes walk from main campus. It's a gentle walk along well lit, main roads. This may seem like a long walk but it's a pretty short commute in comparision to other universities. You can also hop on the 120 bus that goes past main campus, the bus and rail stations and beyond !. If there are any issues in the accommmodation the Customer Services team are happy to assist acs-customerservices@sheffield.ac.uk Best wishes, Sharon
Had a great time in Kinder so far, the Ridge has a free gym which is very handy and I love the community fridge system
Hello and thank you for your review on our Kinder accommodation. We really appreciate it. The fitness suite is located in The Ridge and is free for all residents to use. Our Community Fridge is very popular with students, If students or staff have surplus food items they can donate them here for other students to take. The Village Store often donates items but the best bit is when the supermarket vans pull up and donate lots of lovely items for students to enjoy !. They may have a short use by date but are perfectly fine. Best wishes, Sharon
Generally amazing accommodation however the Wi-Fi is very dodgy at times. It is sometimes annoying being away from most people in Endcliffe but it does mean the site is a lot quieter at night. The rooms are very good with lots of storage and desk space. A nice ensuite and a large, well equipped kitchen meant for a comfortable stay.
Hello and thank you for your review of our Kinder accommodation. We are very grateful. It's great to hear you are happy here. We do class Ranmoor/Endcliffe as one site and they are only a few minutes walk apart. The good thing about the Ranmoor side is that you can hop on the 120 bus down to main campus or the bus/train station if the weather is rubbish !. The rooms are designed to give maximum storage and the space under the beds is great for larger items such as suitcases. Best wishes, Sharon
A bit far away from the action, okay if you prefer quieter neighbours and I think most of the flats here are smaller
Hello and thank you for your review of our Kinder accommodation, we really appreciate it. This area of accommodation does have a reputation for being quieter but we have a few stories to contradict that !. It depends each year on the students that arrive. We never know where the more lively areas will be until students arrive in September. There are different sized flats across the campus so students can choose to be in a smaller or larger place. Best wishes, Sharon
Great customer service and maintenance team, problems are solved quickly. Located in a nice area, decently close to the uni but 9am lectures can be a struggle. The social space in the Ridge is nice but a bit underwhelming compared to the Edge.
Hello and thank you for your review, we really appreciate it !. It's great to hear you are happy with your accommodation. We always want students to have the best experience possible when they live with us. The Customer Services team are happy to help with any maintenance issues that may arise acs-customerservices@sheffield.ac.uk Best wishes, Sharon
Great place, not enough washing machines, however does give free washing
Hello and thank you for your review of our Kinder accommodatio, we really appreciate it. It's good to hear you like the location. Laundry services are run by WashPoint. The good thing is if you go on their website and put the loaction in you can see if there is a machine free so you don't need to hang around to do your washing. Best wishes, Sharon
Good value compared to what other have for the same price. It's quiet but not empty and it's not too far from anything if you're willing to walk for a bit
Hello and thank you for your review, we really appreciate it. Kinder is a great area if you want the student village but not close to the bar etc. Plus you can hop on the 120 bus that runs along Fulwood road outside down to main campus if the weather is rubbsih !. Best wishes, Sharon
The WiFi itself keeps asking you to log back and cuts out. If you have an Ethernet cable they WiFi is good. Being in halls is great and if you want a quieter place pick ranmoor
Hello and thank you for your review, we are very grateful. I am sorry you have had issues with the WiFi but well done on finding a way around this. Best wishes, Sharon
Had a great time in Kinder so far, the Ridge has a free gym which is very handy and I love the community fridge system
Hello and thank you for your review of our Kinder accommodation. We really appreciate it. It's great to read you are happy in your flat. The Ridge fitness suite is available for all residents to use and is included in your rent. The Community Fridges are where surplus food can be donated for others to use. The best bit is when the supermarkets leave lots of lovely things for students to eat. The use by dates may be short but the food is fine !. Best wishes, Sharon
Great accommodation, big kitchen, which is well organised. Not too noisy so can get a good nights sleep. Ridge is a good social space however we have to go to the edge quite a lot of the time if we have any problems.
Hello and thank you for your review of our Kinder accommodation. We are very grateful. It's great to read you are happy with your accommodation. If you have any issues you can log them through MUSE or email acs-customerservices@sheffield.ac.uk if you don't fancy walking down to visit in person !. Best wishes, Sharon
Really pleasant accommodation that is maintained and cleaned frequently and is in a nice area with a short walk to shops. Not as many social spaces compared to the nearby Endcliffe student village but the quiet nature of this area is quite nice.
Hello and thank you for your review of our Kinder accommodation, we are very grateful. It's great to read you are happy with your flat. It is a handy location for Broomhill where you will find most major supermarkets, cafes, bars and loads of charity shops !. There are 2 chemists and a post office which is useful. Students are welcome to attend any events in either The Hub or The Ridge. Residence Life put loads of events on and lots of these are free to attend. Best wishes, Sharon
Wash point very accessible, however ridge gym needs an upgrade
Thanks for your review! It is great to hear you have a positive experience of the Washpoint Laundry Service. We will take your feedback about the Ridge Fitness Suite into consideration when planning our next refurbishment works. We are pleased to offer this to our residents at no additional cost and if you do want to explore further fitness and gym facilities we would recommend checking out a membership at University of Sheffield Sport and Physical Activity. Best wishes Sophie
Great place to stay in Sheffield. Quiet and cosy.
Hello and thank you for taking the time to send a review, we really appreciate it !. I am happy to hear that you like your flat. It's a lovely location to live in. Best wishes, Sharon
Whilst it is situated in a nice area within Sheffield, the block is a good 30 minute walk from the campus with the nearest shops being 15-20 minutes and those shops are limited in size and stock. I've greatly struggled to socialise here and feel as though I haven't gained anything by being here versus private accommodation, which is generally better value for money, or home
Terrible wifi that always cuts out, Ethernet cable doesn’t work (at least right now)
Apartments are much nicer and cleaner than those in Endcliffe, and the social experience is pretty much the same (uni is what you make it) Ranmoor does however have a lack of social space since closure of the ridge. WiFi can be temperamental but is usually very fast.
Good but endcliffe is a better location
For first year accommodation the kinder apartments were pretty good although the university accommodation in general is a little bit expensive. However, you do get everything sorted for you so you don't have to worry about renting a house or paying bills and the area that the accommodation is in is close to some shops and is very easy to get to the uni. It could be improved in terms of matching students as although my flat mates weren't awful, they could have been better as I was awoken by flat parties a couple of times. Overall, I would go back into student accommodation but I prefer private housing.
Quieter than endcliffe but amazing kitchens and the ridge is better than the edge if people actually use it
