All the Answers You Need About Student Accommodation
What tenancy length do I need?
Some students choose to stay during the academic year, whilst others – particularly international students – require a tenancy that covers the entire year. You can also find student accommodation that is available for one or two terms, classified as a “short stay” on our search filters.
Should I stay in catered student accommodation?
This is totally up to you! Catered accommodation means you will be served meals at set times in a dining hall, and you’ll likely have access to fewer kitchen facilities than if you were to stay in self-catered accommodation.
What is a guarantor and do I need one?
A guarantor is a person who signs a contract to agree to pay your rent if you are unable to. Most university accommodation requires a guarantor, and this applies to both domestic and international students.
Will I need to pay a deposit on student accommodation?
Most likely, yes, you’ll need to pay a deposit. This will be refunded at the end of your stay as long as there is no damage to the room or property.
What bills will my rent include?
If you are staying in university-run accommodation or private halls, your rent should include any utilities such as electricity, gas, water, and internet. Students are not required to pay council tax, however you may need to fill in an exemption form so make sure you check with your local council.
What is purpose-built student accommodation?
Purpose-built student accommodation (PBSA) are residential buildings designed for students. They are often located close to campus, boast modern facilities, include all bills, and often have staff on site to assist residents.
Will my student accommodation be furnished?
Student accommodation is typically fully furnished. Your room should include at least a bed, clothes storage, desk and chair. You’ll likely need to bring things such as bedding and kitchen utensils, but we have a full list here of everything you’ll need.

Good sized rooms and well laid out. Nice kitchen. maintenance issues always get resolved quickly. not much social experience at the ridge. tend go to the edge more often. wifi could definitely be better as it often cuts out. the cleaning on tuesdays is never very deep.
Ranmoor is known for being a little quieter, and for good reason. It's not necessarily a bad thing though. The Ridge is pretty dead, though I'm not sure the Edge in Endcliffe is much better. Uni halls are typically quite expensive, I'm currently in an en-suite room and it has the necessities, though the shower is more of a wet room with a drain in the floor and a standard curtain. The furnishings in the bedroom are quite office-like, and my pin-board is rock solid so I'm not actually able to push pins in. The cleaners come regularly to clean communal areas like kitchens and hallways, though I'm not sure they hoover. The wifi is quite temperamental, as whenever I turn my phone off it gets disconnected from the wifi so I have to either keep my data on constantly or reconnect every time I turn my phone back on in order to receive notifications. Ranmoor and Endcliffe are 20-30 mins from most uni buildings if you walk, but there are regular buses with multiple stops near the accommodation.
Thank you for taking the time to leave your feedback about your experience at Ranmoor. We understand that Ranmoor can be quieter, and we're glad to hear that you don't necessarily see this as a negative. It’s great to know you’re finding the essentials in your en-suite room. If you do experience an maintenance issues within your room you can fill out the maintenance request form on the Accommodation Portal. Regarding the cleaning service, we strive to ensure communal spaces are kept clean, and we’ll certainly look into the hoovering of these areas to make sure the service meets your expectations. We’re sorry to hear about the Wi-Fi issue you’ve been experiencing. If you haven't already, we recommend reaching out to Customer Services for assistance, as they may be able to help resolve the connectivity problems you're facing and provide you with an ethernet cable. Lastly, we’re pleased that you find the transport options convenient, and hope the regular buses help make getting to campus easier. Thank you again for your valuable feedback. Sophie :)

Best accommodation in my opinion
Met some great friends, almost luxurious accommodation for students
Looove being in Ranmoor - it’s known as the quiet site which I guess it is but I like it that way. It’s quiet enough that you can sleep but there’s still always something going on if you fancy it. It’s a bit of a trek from uni but I guess it means you get a good step count everyday! There’s also a free gym and printing facilities at the ridge which is helpful. Not really had any issues in the flat, a couple of maintenance problems which were sorted fairly quickly. Had a bit of an issue with cleaners using our things and not cleaning them after (quite ironic really) but we reported it and the issue was dealt with really well. We have Residence Life mentors who visit weekly, although they can be annoying it’s nice to know that if you disappeared someone would realise hahaha
Bit far away from the uni, but close to the other freshers and the flats are decent for student accommodation
A little far from uni, but lovely place to live. Wifi and phone signal sometimes patchy.
Lovely bedrooms- more space than I expected. Bathroom pretty decent, and everything works and is clean. Communal areas in larger flats are really nice, with just enough storage and fridge/freezer space. Mentor is a legend- have had lots of banter :) overall very nice, if a little expensive
Near endcliffe - not as social - small social space
It's same sex and not very big but besides that sure
Cleaners are lovely. The surroundings are beautiful. I love the ridge and the friendship tree. Everyone is up for a good time and there's always a party going on somewhere.
Sort of expensive compared to other units but really loved it as it's quite new so nothing is broken in the rooms or kitchen. The rooms have a great layout with a huge deal and nice pin board. The ensuits are like a big wet room so are easy to clean. Really enjoyed my time there
Great for first year, 25 minutes walk from uni, 10 minutes from lots of shops. Does tend to get noisy late on at night, but this comes with the uni experience. The ridge bar is fantastic with cheap food, pool table, darts and has something different on every night (quiz, bingo, movies, football, etc). Lots of students to make friends with, rooms are decent sizes and bathrooms are small but everything is there what you need.
