Greenow was absolutely amazing, the location was perfect and the size of the rooms for what we paid was great, only comment that we had from last year was that there wasn’t really a place we could chill out in within the flat, like sitting at the dining table to watch a film with the flat was super uncomfortable, maybe a smaller dining table with a small sofa as we were never eating dinner the same time.

All the Answers You Need About Student Accommodation
What tenancy length do I need?
Some students choose to stay during the academic year, whilst others – particularly international students – require a tenancy that covers the entire year. You can also find student accommodation that is available for one or two terms, classified as a “short stay” on our search filters.
Should I stay in catered student accommodation?
This is totally up to you! Catered accommodation means you will be served meals at set times in a dining hall, and you’ll likely have access to fewer kitchen facilities than if you were to stay in self-catered accommodation.
What is a guarantor and do I need one?
A guarantor is a person who signs a contract to agree to pay your rent if you are unable to. Most university accommodation requires a guarantor, and this applies to both domestic and international students.
Will I need to pay a deposit on student accommodation?
Most likely, yes, you’ll need to pay a deposit. This will be refunded at the end of your stay as long as there is no damage to the room or property.
What bills will my rent include?
If you are staying in university-run accommodation or private halls, your rent should include any utilities such as electricity, gas, water, and internet. Students are not required to pay council tax, however you may need to fill in an exemption form so make sure you check with your local council.
What is purpose-built student accommodation?
Purpose-built student accommodation (PBSA) are residential buildings designed for students. They are often located close to campus, boast modern facilities, include all bills, and often have staff on site to assist residents.
Will my student accommodation be furnished?
Student accommodation is typically fully furnished. Your room should include at least a bed, clothes storage, desk and chair. You’ll likely need to bring things such as bedding and kitchen utensils, but we have a full list here of everything you’ll need.

Accommodation is average and acceptable but very expensive for what you are getting. Paying £50-£100 per week more than most other non-London accommodations of the same quality.

The kitchen is modern, but quite small. And Bathrooms for en-suites are all Wet room style and very old fashioned looks like a hospital. However the layout of the rooms is quite nice !!

Very good value for money. The location is right near to the laundry rooms, parks eats, park bar and around a ten minute walk to the main quad of campus and the sports park. Weekly cleaning and bins changed regularly. Post delivered to the post box 2 mins away and parcels to park reception. Grocery shopping can be delivered outside the building. No lift access. 8/9 people to a flat.

Due to its location it’s close to a bar, food and a social space for all, which often hosted free events. This means you can get really stuck in and involved right outside your accommodation.

It is a really nice accommodation, especially for first-years. Really close to social gatherings and to the main campus. Plus other accommodations are nearby. I certainly would recommend this accommodation!

Loved living in McCombie, the rooms were perfect for what I wanted, the flats didn’t have too many people so there was lots of space in the comunal area, had all the appliances we needed. Any issues we did have were resolved and there was always someone on hand to sort anything out. The location was great for getting to the main university campus, the majority of my lectures were across the lake so were a little bit of a longer walk but still a good lactation. Would highly recommend!

Great location, kitchen size and social opportunities were plenty, however maintenance was not as up to standard as I had hoped as when my door broke and they said it would be replaced I just came back to it glued back together with a huge mark in it

Great first year experience, especially since it’s on campus and easy to navigate around.

Everything that was broken was fixed promptly. The cleaners did an incredible job every week. it was close to the student union and was easy to get to the lecture halls.

Comfy enough room if you can handle a single bed. It's not the most modern looking uni accom out there but it's cozy and not cramped at all considering the price. you get a desk lamp, desk bins, bathroom bins, plunger provided. small wardrobe but extra storage underneath the mattress. Kitchen's an ok size but don't believe the bs about fridge space, you only get 2 mini-fridges and two mini- freezers between 8 people, 3 shelves each fridge- incredibly frustrating most times and its very easy to twist the knob on them to adjust fridge temperatures, so we got frozen food alot! Kitchen gets cleaned once a week and bins get changed regularly. Distance from central campus is pretty good, ~7 mins walking. Social spaces include Park lounge and park eat/bar 2 min walk away with the wash room being inside park lounge. Internet in halls are super fast surprisingly. Ziggy the cat likes hanging around greenow and mccombie alot, so just be prepared to bring some cat treats and catnip :)
Hi, Thank you for your detailed feedback. It is great to hear that your room, the cleaning team, social spaces and Ziggy all had a positive impact on your stay. We do appreciate the feedback regarding the fridges and freezers in your accommodation and are continually working to improve student experience. Kind regards, The Reading Accommodation Team
Silverfish coming out of the tap, bathroom small and mouldy not a wet room but should be due to design bathroom floods, noisy
Hi, Thank you for taking the time to leave your feedback. We are sorry to hear that your experience fell below your expectations. Common causes of pests in halls are poor housekeeping, especially in kitchens, so it’s important to keep kitchens clean and tidy. Pests may also be brought into the accommodation by accidental import in luggage and food. It’s best to avoid keeping any food in your bedroom. To help identify pests and determine if any action is needed, please see the Pests and Insects poster on your kitchen noticeboard or by clicking here. If you are concerned or see any pests, please report this to the Halls Hotline on 0800 029 1984. A specialist pest control company will investigate any reports, and we will address the issue in line with their recommendations. We encourage residents to report all maintenance issues via the dedicated Home at Halls app so that our team can rectify as soon as possible. There will always be an element of noise associated with communal living, however we do have staff on-site 24/7 who will quickly respond to any noise complaints should they arrive. If you would like to discuss further or share more detailed feedback, please do reach out on accommodationonline@reading.ac.uk or 0118 200 5011. Kind Regards, The Reading Accommodation Team
Central accommodation, close to amenities
Greenow House is nothing too special but it is very close of the University amenities and facilities being roughly ten minutes away from most of the key areas.
Mccombie is a decent accommodation. It’s smaller than others but you can still get to know a lot of people. It’s close to park bar which is good, and only a short walk to centre of campus
If you want an en-suite that’s on campus and is not too expensive, this is the best hall you can choose. The only downside is that it’s not the easiest hall to meet other people not in your flat, however, you are a two minute walk from park bar so if you like that kind of thing then that more than makes up for the lack of social space. The rooms are a decent size and the kitchen is great, I definitely made the right choice of halls!

I highly recommend these halls. It’s smaller than others such as Mackinder which gave it much more of a community feel as we got to know lots of people in the building. The halls is located near Park Bar (a one minute walk), it’s close enough to be easy to get to but far enough that you can’t hear it. The rooms are modern and between 8 people you get 2 ovens and 3 fridges which is a really good amount of space in the kitchen. I loved living here and think it’s the best halls on campus!!
Smaller halls but still very social
Good facilities and cleaning, good location on campus
The halls are very modern and spaceous. Our kitchen gets cleaned most days and our bins are emptied for us as well. There are many social spaces but as they seperate the two kitchens from the main social place it makes it hard to socialise. The location is lovelg but it’s the massive hill that we have to walk up daily that lets it down. But there is pretty much everything we need on sight such as; fitness room, shop, social space, computer room and a laundrette
Pretty decent rooms and bathrooms. The kitchen is shared between 9-10 people, you usually have a lot of space, 2 freezers and 3 fridges. Great value for money. A load of storage, you can fit everything in, and comes with underbed storage also. Location is amazing, super close to almost every facility that you'll need, and also close to many of the other halls (which makes for a great social life). Park bar is right around the corner, and you can't hear any noise coming from it. Halls hotline means that your problems get logged and fixed within a week, and noise complaints from outside can be rectified in a matter of mins. Wifi is also really good too, no issues with it so far
A bit run down. Small bed but you get good storage a dishwasher.
The accommodation should be cheaper. The kitchen should be updated to have 2 sinks. More shelving or extra pin-board in rooms would be helpful.
Being one of the smaller halls allowed me to make friends with several other flats and created a real sense of community.
