St Patrick’s hall was a home away from home. I made many friends from all over the world. From China, Australia, Fiji, USA, Nigeria, Cameroon, Uganda, Kenya, All over Europe. We had lots of fun, from card games, potluck parties when the sun came out in Spring after a chilling winter made everything bright. The Dining hall being close to the hall was where we met most friends. Sharing meals together, getting to debrief after a long day of academic endeavours. Truly, it resonated with all of us and the find memories, fun activities, birthday parties held at the JCR, piano playing, made while there are etch eternally in memory. The Pearson’s court made it all worthy as the Silence, ambience, ready to help staff provided the right atmosphere to relax, think all things Neuroscience and academia. I have had lots of videos and photos that are a reminder that time really flies when you are having a good time. Thankful for the many friends I made, the memories we had, to be cherished eternally

Q&A
Hello,
Thank you for your question and interest in St Patrick's Hall!
St. Patrick's Hall is a primarily catered hall where a gold meal plan is included in the cost of the room, making this option the most budget-friendly accommodation we have at Reading. The flats do have small kitchenettes in which to prepare basic meals and drinks, however most students take advantage of the inclusive meal plan for their main meal each day, some even upgrade to platinum to cover all their meals for the week! There is a catering outlet specifically for residents of St. Patrick's where you can eat and socialise with flatmates and residents from other flats also, and common areas to hang out with friends outside of your flat. While you are on campus for lectures, you can make use of other catering outlets as well as a wide range of study and social spaces.
If you are looking for a room without a Meal Plan with larger kitchens for cooking and socialising, then you may wish to consider the upgraded rooms with washbasins in Wessex Hall or the premium rooms with shared bathrooms in Bridges Hall.
If you have more questions or would like to discuss how to apply for accommodation, our Accommodation Office are on-hand to help. You can email us at accommodationonline@reading.ac.uk or call us on 0118 200 5011

All the Answers You Need About Student Accommodation
What tenancy length do I need?
Some students choose to stay during the academic year, whilst others – particularly international students – require a tenancy that covers the entire year. You can also find student accommodation that is available for one or two terms, classified as a “short stay” on our search filters.
Should I stay in catered student accommodation?
This is totally up to you! Catered accommodation means you will be served meals at set times in a dining hall, and you’ll likely have access to fewer kitchen facilities than if you were to stay in self-catered accommodation.
What is a guarantor and do I need one?
A guarantor is a person who signs a contract to agree to pay your rent if you are unable to. Most university accommodation requires a guarantor, and this applies to both domestic and international students.
Will I need to pay a deposit on student accommodation?
Most likely, yes, you’ll need to pay a deposit. This will be refunded at the end of your stay as long as there is no damage to the room or property.
What bills will my rent include?
If you are staying in university-run accommodation or private halls, your rent should include any utilities such as electricity, gas, water, and internet. Students are not required to pay council tax, however you may need to fill in an exemption form so make sure you check with your local council.
What is purpose-built student accommodation?
Purpose-built student accommodation (PBSA) are residential buildings designed for students. They are often located close to campus, boast modern facilities, include all bills, and often have staff on site to assist residents.
Will my student accommodation be furnished?
Student accommodation is typically fully furnished. Your room should include at least a bed, clothes storage, desk and chair. You’ll likely need to bring things such as bedding and kitchen utensils, but we have a full list here of everything you’ll need.

St. Patrick's Hall has offered me great value for money, particularly because it offers not only decent accommodation but also a meal plan and the option to cook for myself to supplement the meal plan where necessary (which is rare). The wi-fi is great in my room and I get a conducive environment to stay and focus if I need to. I think it's a great option for someone that's looking for basic accommodation with the basic amenities for comfort through university.
Hi, Thank you so much for your review. We're glad you had a great experience living at Reading! Kind Regards, The Reading Accommodation Team
I stayed in St Patricks hall in for the academic year 2023 - 2024. The main places for socialising on Northcourt campus are the canteen and the common room in old court, although I think the spaces on main campus are a bit more popular as they are closer to key facilities and halls that don't have a quiet lifestyle. Other than that, great value for money and good if you want a more quiet time at uni.
Hi, Thank you for your feedback, we really appreciate it here at Reading! We’re really pleased you enjoyed your time living here. Kind Regards, The Reading Accommodation Team
was pretty solid year, just that social spaces like a kitchen or lounge area doesn’t exist in your own area. kitchens are often too small to accommodate more than 3 people at once
Hi, Thank you so much for your feedback! We're glad to hear that you had a solid experience overall. All our halls are equipped with JCRs and common rooms, providing plenty of spaces for socializing beyond individual flats. Additionally, our Home@Halls team regularly hosts events in these communal areas to help bring students together and create a vibrant community. If you would like to discuss further or share more detailed feedback, please do reach out on accommodationonline@reading.ac.uk or 0118 200 5011. Kind Regards, The Reading Accommodation Team
St Pat's was perfect for first year halls. Despite lack of social spaces it was still easy to meet people.

I really like the accomodation and my room but the design of the kitchen and bathroom sharing is odd. I do not understand who I’m using the bathroom with and that would be useful. I was not given information regarding any of this and that is very weird in my opinion.
Hi, Thank you for your feedback and review! We're delighted to hear that you enjoyed St. Patrick’s Hall and your room. We're sorry to hear the confusion regarding the kitchen and bathroom. We do encourage residents to discuss any issues via the 24/7 Halls Hotline or your halls reception so that our team can provide clarity on any issues. If you would like to discuss further or share more detailed feedback, please do reach out on accommodationonline@reading.ac.uk or 0118 200 5011. Kind Regards, The Reading Accommodation Team

Living at St. Patrick’s has been a great experience! The social life here is amazing, with lots of opportunities to meet new people and make friends. The accommodation feels really cozy and welcoming, almost like a second home. Overall, it’s a fantastic hall, and I’m glad I chose to stay here!

My stay in St Patricks was just alright. I liked how close i was to campus and shops where i could get essential things. The dining Hall being close by was also really good even though the food was not always good. My room was large and spacious and I didn't have a lot of stuff so the storage available was adequate for me. The bathroom was always full of spiders - built in halloween decor - as i liked to call them but on a serious note it wasn't nice having to constantly see spiders while in the shower or using the bathroom. Overall, this experience was not enough to convince me to live in St.Pats again, or in Halls at all. I opted for a private accommodation instead this year.
Hi, Thank you for taking the time to share your review and feedback! We're glad to hear that you appreciated the convenient location of St. Patrick’s Hall, as well as the spaciousness of your room and proximity to the dining hall. We're sorry to hear about the issue of spiders in the bathrooms. We do encourage students to report all issues via the dedicated Home at Halls app or the 24/7 Halls Hotline so that our team can rectify any issues as soon as possible. We're sorry to hear that you did not always enjoy the food offered. We do encourage students to discuss any concerns with Clever Cuisine either by visiting them in person or by email to arrange a meeting. Their email is clevercuisine@reading.ac.uk. If your flat gets along well it's a great time. Most flats don't have another social room aside from the kitchen, so the kitchen is good for socialising
Hi, Thank you for taking the time to provide feedback. We're glad to hear that you had a great time and that your flat got along. There are JCRs and common rooms in all halls, therefore socialising is not restricted to flats. Home at Halls, our social program, put on events in the common areas to bring students together and create a social environment. Residents can attend Home at Halls events all over campus. The JCR/common room for St. Patrick’s Hall is located on the first floor of Old Court and is equipped with a TV and piano. If you would like to discuss further or share more detailed feedback, please do reach out on accommodationonline@reading.ac.uk or 0118 200 5011. Kind Regards, The Reading Accommodation Team
For price room want bad but want great either. Internet was on and off the whole year. I had rats or some sort of rodent in my room from dec/jan and i reported it several times to which they placed rat traps but the issue was never fixed and i had a rat roommate for the rest of the year, occasionally destroying some things in my room.
Hi, Thank you for your feedback, we appreciate it here at Reading. We are sorry to hear that your experience fell below expectations. Thank you for your feedback regarding WIFI – we generally receive very positive feedback in our regular customer service surveys regarding WIFI speed, however we do advise that any issues can be picked up directly with the provider Glide whose details are shared on arrival as part of your induction. Each room has both WIFI and ethernet access. Common causes of pests in halls are poor housekeeping, especially in kitchens, so it’s important to keep kitchens clean and tidy. Pests may also be brought into the accommodation by accidental import in luggage and food. It’s best to avoid keeping any food in your bedroom. To help identify pests and determine if any action is needed, please see the Pests and Insects poster on your kitchen noticeboard or by clicking here. If you are concerned or see any pests, please report this to the Halls Hotline on 0800 029 1984. A specialist pest control company will investigate any reports, and we will address the issue in line with their recommendations. If you would like to discuss this further or provide more detailed feedback, please contact accommodationonline@reading.ac.uk or phone 0118 200 5011. Kind regards, The Reading Accommodation Team
Loved my room and the space. The only downside was the lack of a kitchen/social area so we would meet up as a group in someone’s room. The rooms were definitely big enough, however this is only Pearson court in st pats not new court.

I met a fantastic group of people through my accommodation and I had a great time staying here. I only wish there was more social spaces as I found most of my social time was spent in someone else's room rather than a common room area.

Hi, Thanks so much for your review. We’re glad you had a great experience living at Reading! Kind Regards, The Reading Accommodation Team
Great value for money seeing as it also comes with a meal plan and a sink in the room. It's right opposite the university so it's not far from lectures. The toilets and communal spaces get cleaned regularly.
Hi, Thanks so much for your review. We’re glad you had a great experience living at Reading! Kind Regards, The Reading Accommodation Team
Relatively ok experience, some rooms need improvement as some things such as beds and carpets are very old, gross, and clearly overused or not washed. Very close to campus and other needs (food shops, pharmacy, medical center, etc). The food provided for lunch and dinner, however, is abysmal and disappointing with the exception of breakfast that is actually very nice.
Hi, Thank you for your review, I am glad to hear you enjoyed the location of your accommodation and the facilities nearby. Poor management in general. Showers never warm, never adequately fixed.

Old court rooms are really spacious and sound proof. The wifi was extremely fast and easy to connect to. the food was a bit hit or miss at times but there was a kitchen available.

St Pats was a great hall to live in. Convenient to get food, into town, and to classes.
Hi, Thank you for your feedback, we really appreciate it here at Reading! We’re really pleased you enjoyed your time living here. Kind Regards, The Reading Accommodation Team
Internet sometimes disappears. People there are friendly and helpful. Some stores are near with everything you may need. Busses are near. Room quality depends on which room you get, may be a bit better somewhere. Security are operating 24 hours per day. A bit far away from main campus buildings, but for that price (food included) that’s great! Definitely I’ll return this year :))

Good value for money as meal plans are included with the rent. Easy access to the laundry room. However, the toilets and hallways are quickly dirtied after it has been cleaned.

I lived in St. Patrick's Hall for about nine months, and as an extrovert, I had a great time making friends, with people around all the time. Being Indian, I appreciated the diversity and the opportunity to meet people from different cultures. It was a vibrant, enjoyable experience that I miss. In the last two months, I moved to Stenton Townhouses. The cleanliness and well-maintained communal spaces were impressive, and the peace and quiet helped me manage my lab work efficiently. Both halls offered unique and memorable experiences!

St Patricks is a great hall would recommend. Slightly off campus but not a problem and slightly closer to town. Shared bathrooms never a problem and cleaned every week day. Catered food is okay and useful to not have to cook all the time. 2 common areas and a study space. Old court/Pearsons court is nicer than the new court with bigger rooms, drinking water in rooms and laid out in blocks of 12 although the kitchen is smaller than the new court. Issues get resolved really quickly and dinning room is very near.

Amazing experience at St. Patrick's as it is value for money as it is reasonably priced and real close to campus (5 - 7 mins walk). The hall is clean and are well maintained and the rooms are spacious. The social spaces are good to interact with other hall mates. Wi-Fi is really strong and I haven't faced any disruption in connection ever. Social experience have been amazing as I have made so many friends through this hall.
It’s not the best accommodation looks wise but it’s where I met all of my closest friends. The environment helps people make friends and everyone is so nice and welcoming. As an international student it was a bit more difficult for me to make friends but in the end I made friends for life.
It’s great value for money. A bit noisy at times but you will love it here.
Barely human living conditions
Your experience in St Pats will vary greatly depending on whether you end up in Old or New court. I am personally a resident of New Court and felt that I would've had a better living experience in Old Court. Here are some major points: - Washbasin water in New Court isn't drinkable (is drinkable in old court tho) - Things in New Court break more often as facilities are sparsely distributed (up to 20 people sharing 3 bathrooms on my floor and 1 kitchen to 12+) - There is a common room and a study room in Old court accessible to all residents (great area for pre-drinks!) - Kitchen tables on ground floor flats in New Court, everybody else misses out. - Shamrock Cafe is great value for money as an all-you-can-eat buffet, but the food quality isn't much better than school dinners. - Very often radiator and water problems in New Court because the whole building was built to maximise profit. - 4 washing machines and 4 tumble dryers in the launderette for the 300+ residents :/
Not quite like normal halls because it wasn’t in a corridor system but overall great experience
Not the most pleasing hall to be in however never meet such a great bunch of people ! Soixcials are on point
I personally dont live on campus bus i have friends who do and they love it!
My halls weren’t the nicest looking but I my room was definitely the bonus - very spacious and I had a lot of storage too. The only downside was that we didn’t really have a good communal space which was fresh and modern. It was just an old, dark, dingy room which was perhaps used 3 times that year.
I thought it a brilliant home, but then I did leave in 1959 so things might have changed a bit since thin!
It's old run down and slightly s*** but it's our s***. I mean you may get food poisoning from Sham, a place that still serves spam fritters (not going to lie the most disgusting thing I have ever tried). However, St Pats is made by the people, unlike some halls where you don't even know who lives in the flat next door, in St Pats you know everyone and everyone is a somewhat functioning alcoholic (some less functioning then others...). I admit you will get no work done as it seems the entirety of St Pats is at every Union and MNQ, but you will have a lot of amazingly messy nights out. Besides first year doesn't count anyway!
It's a sh*thole but its out sh*thole
Despite the halls themselves looking like Alcatraz, the social aspect is spot on
Unity over the large hall corridors, and our block was the most involved in all the themed nights
My time was absolutely amazing, I had so much fun there!
Had an amazing time in St Pats, couldn't have asked for a better halls
Was great fun always a party outside j block
Basically St Pats is a s*** hole, but when you live there its your s*******. you get food so there's no washing up and its easily got the best social life as everyone is a mixture between Danny Dyer and Amy Winehouse. Hardly any common rooms or dining rooms, so some unfortunate is forced to have pre drinks forced upon them every night, and because its St Pats, pre drinks actually happen every night. Sure it looks like a prison but when s*** gets broken maintenance are quick to fix it and the cleaners are proper nice geezers. Internet is proper decent.. Basically St Pats s**** on everywhere else because its bare jokes.
New court is a great social experience due to the corridor layout however old court is a lot less social due to the seperate blocks and it being a designated quiet area (which most people have not requested)
St. Pat's is one of the furthest halls away from campus, the cleaning is inconsistent. The common room is not frequently used very well apart from for pre-drinks and in old court there are no social spaces for everyone to chill, one of the most annoying things.
It's s***, but it's our s***...
One of the oldest halls in reading, they've learnt over the years how to give freshers and mature students the best experience of halls and the social aspects that come with university life. Unlike most modern halls you are not split up into corridors of 6-12, instead you have the entire roam of 200 people to be friends with and socialise with. The catered experience really helps students to have more time for socialising... I mean work... and also is no more expensive than uncatered halls. You'll be cooking for yourself for your entire life after so why not put it off another year!
Definitely what I wanted from my halls experience! Well known for its liveliness, parties and being crazy. Known as the most sociable halls at Reading uni, I felt like part of one big wild family. So easy to meet new people immediately as there are no flat divisions. You'll find a group of people you fit with no matter what because there's such a range all living together! I am definitely going to miss it there in second year, it didn't look much at first but i soon realised its the people that make it great!
It was quite expensive for what you got, but St pats is most definitely the most social hall, you meet pretty much everyone, and have loads of friends from lots of different courses etc, there's not much in way of social spaces, or there is but they're not on each corridor, the wifi is crap and drops all the time but there's a cable internet? I enjoyed my time in St pats loads, I can't say for the older part, but I hear it's quieter and good for mature/post grad accommodation
Decent social halls but as I previously stated there doesn't seem like there's much to do but drink. I ended up meeting a fair few people though. It's also very expensive, private accommodation is usually 1-2 grand cheaper per year.
Not the most attractive hall on campus, nor the best location BUT the atmosphere makes it an amazing place to live, especially the rivalry with a nearby hall called Wantage.
it is very dated, dusty and generally a bit foul
Nowhere to socialise, catered food is awful - not healthy, small portions etc.
Catered food is all from frozen packets, not nice. There aren't really any inviting places for everyone to sit and chat except our rooms, but the fact that it's not in flats is brilliant. You can mix with who you want, and not be trapped with people you don't like.
It's mad! Best bunch of people with some crazy behaviour thrown into the mix. Classic café Shamrock food literally 10m away so you never go hungry..
Was so expensive for terrible service. Food was horrendous, I got food poisoning a couple of times. Our warden had no idea how to do his job, rooms were extremely easy to break into, with someone breaking into my locked room while I was sleeping, waking me up, and then leaving again. Internet was also very poor, no good for studying. JCR charged us very high fees at the beginning of the year, then we heard nothing of them for the rest of the year. All UoR halls of residence are now out of my price range as a working class student, with a terrible level of service in return.
