All the Answers You Need About Student Accommodation
What tenancy length do I need?
Some students choose to stay during the academic year, whilst others – particularly international students – require a tenancy that covers the entire year. You can also find student accommodation that is available for one or two terms, classified as a “short stay” on our search filters.
Should I stay in catered student accommodation?
This is totally up to you! Catered accommodation means you will be served meals at set times in a dining hall, and you’ll likely have access to fewer kitchen facilities than if you were to stay in self-catered accommodation.
What is a guarantor and do I need one?
A guarantor is a person who signs a contract to agree to pay your rent if you are unable to. Most university accommodation requires a guarantor, and this applies to both domestic and international students.
Will I need to pay a deposit on student accommodation?
Most likely, yes, you’ll need to pay a deposit. This will be refunded at the end of your stay as long as there is no damage to the room or property.
What bills will my rent include?
If you are staying in university-run accommodation or private halls, your rent should include any utilities such as electricity, gas, water, and internet. Students are not required to pay council tax, however you may need to fill in an exemption form so make sure you check with your local council.
What is purpose-built student accommodation?
Purpose-built student accommodation (PBSA) are residential buildings designed for students. They are often located close to campus, boast modern facilities, include all bills, and often have staff on site to assist residents.
Will my student accommodation be furnished?
Student accommodation is typically fully furnished. Your room should include at least a bed, clothes storage, desk and chair. You’ll likely need to bring things such as bedding and kitchen utensils, but we have a full list here of everything you’ll need.

It’s overall very nice! I do think that’s money well spent and I got a lot of new friends living there
it would be better if we get a closer reception.
It is a nice accommodation and good for first year students.
Hello, Thanks so much for your positive review. I'm thrilled that you are enjoying your stay at Mason! Best of luck with you studies! Kind Regards, Hannah Customer Service Manager - Mason
Great place to be, but far from shops
What I expected and more, the rooms are lovely and the kitchens are massive, only downside is the wet room en suite but I’ve soon got used to it
Although it wasn't my first choice, i do love it now. I would recommend it mainly for undergrads because being a post grad in Mason with a beautiful roof top view is cool but I don't have a lot of friends here. Mason is really beautiful and very accessible to the city centre and the main campus.
Beautiful accommodation, what I wanted
Loving it so far but overpriced and no real outside social spaces but it's close to other vale accoms
The halls itself look better than your average however they aren't well designed for the best social experience. The kitchen lay out is not practical for socialising while the sofas are so uncomfortable you'd be better off staying in bed. Many halls have locked gates or main doors in order to enter however such is not the case when it comes to Mason. The location is good as it is part of the vale village but it shares an office with Shackleton which is a five minute walk away. I can't fault the wifi or Internet services which you'll be taking advantage of in your bedroom as you scroll through facebook given that your social life in reality won't be blooming in these halls.
Had a great time at Mason. Best location on the Vale being the closest to the university as well as Shackleton where you have all the shops and pub.
Not a proper table and not really associated with other flats in a block like chamberlain which is gives opportunity to make more friends but it is very nice, en suite and close to uni and the beds are bigger
The best Hall on the Vale when considering the fact that meal plan is a drag
Location is nice and possibly fantastic if you're lucky enough to have a room with a view. Very expensive for what you get. Big kitchens, although space is so poorly used you barely have any space to cook and very little storage. Wet rooms are weird.
Mason is nice enough, and it is great being on the vale. Rooms are lovely and it's great having an ensuit. Kitchens are poorly laid out and you may need to invest in a table. But overall I'd be okay living in Mason again.
not sociable at all, kitchen oddly shaped with no communal eating area, lack of security too
Lovely building, with adaquate space. En suites are nice, besides the fact that they do flood. Very light, and sociable. Although sociablity brought down by the fact that there is no indoor corridor connecting flats.
Pretty good, repairs dealt with slowly and a lot considering its new
Wifi is okay, bit slow at times but I have no service/3G anywhere on the vale which is quite inconvenient if I cant get wifi but other than that the rooms and kitchens in mason are really modern, social and very nice
Amazing location- but as we're in the basement, theres lots of matresses and bedsheets left outside our door in the surrounding space waiting to go in a locked cupboard- its dangerous and just not visually pleasing!
Mason is a good accommodation, wifi and signal is bad but we are not mason w******! Mason is so lovely, but if you want somewhere amazing go to Chamberlain it's incredible! Mason is great too
at the vale, we are quite isolated - there are no supermarkets writhing easy walking distance, and no pubs or restaurants nearby… if you come here, definitely buy a bus pass; it will be your saviour! Apart from that, the rooms are nice and clean, and the staff at the hub are always helpful :)
No phone reception, having no kitchen table makes it hard to socialise and no common room area for whole block
Mason is great!! It's very social and in a great location, however there isn't much in the way of storage, and the social space in the kitchen isn't the best as all the seats face away from each other.
A little bit overpriced but rooms/kitchen are modern and a decent size. No cleaners are provided but it has a great location on the vale and I would choose to live here again. A pretty social hall, don't choose it if you don't like going out and don't like noise. Also due to its high price be prepared for the abuse from other halls.
