Some students choose to stay during the academic year, whilst others – particularly international students – require a tenancy that covers the entire year. You can also find student accommodation that is available for one or two terms, classified as a “short stay” on our search filters.
This is totally up to you! Catered accommodation means you will be served meals at set times in a dining hall, and you’ll likely have access to fewer kitchen facilities than if you were to stay in self-catered accommodation.
A guarantor is a person who signs a contract to agree to pay your rent if you are unable to. Most university accommodation requires a guarantor, and this applies to both domestic and international students.
Most likely, yes, you’ll need to pay a deposit. This will be refunded at the end of your stay as long as there is no damage to the room or property.
If you are staying in university-run accommodation or private halls, your rent should include any utilities such as electricity, gas, water, and internet. Students are not required to pay council tax, however you may need to fill in an exemption form so make sure you check with your local council.
Purpose-built student accommodation (PBSA) are residential buildings designed for students. They are often located close to campus, boast modern facilities, include all bills, and often have staff on site to assist residents.
Student accommodation is typically fully furnished. Your room should include at least a bed, clothes storage, desk and chair. You’ll likely need to bring things such as bedding and kitchen utensils, but we have a full list here of everything you’ll need.
The location is a little bit far away from the uni. The most worse thing is the reception staff trespassed into my room, under the guise of checking it, which let me feel really uncomfortable and I have received no explanation for any wrongdoing at the moment.
Very friendly staff and the maintenance team is the best! Great events keep taking place every other week! It’s a super fun place to live in!
I used to think this accommodation was good value for money however things absolutely do not get fixed quick enough. The lift has been broken for nearly 4 months If not already more and I live on the 10th floor! I have been told that last year the same happened to the other side of the building lift had been broken for 3 months. I am forced to drag my luggage up and down when I go home and make a return. Have to keep shopping minimal because it’s too heavy to carry! It is beyond me how it can take this long to fix. I am tired!
This accommodation does not deserve a single star. I have lived in many university accommodations during my studies but this is without a doubt THE WORST ONE. It's a real shame how the residence works, the staff is rude, the inspections to your apartment are constant, and the WORST thing of all are the fire alarms. They can be at 2 am and the alarm goes off, or at 8 am, again at noon, again at night... and so on. It's a nightmare. And even after all the torment we have to live among constant alarms no matter what time of day/night it is, right now we just had a fire drill. (YES SURE, BECAUSE WE BARELY HAVE this situation EVERY SINGLE DAY) And a staff member yelled at us for not leaving the building in less than 10 minutes... HOW IN THIS WORLD you want us to leave in 10 minutes when this alarm is continuously sounding we are getting used to live with it, if we have to go down every time we hear it we would have to live on the street. DONT BOOK A ROOM HERE, LIVING HERE IS A NIGHTMARE..
It's an ok place, but for some reason landlord doesn't fix things that break, for example, the lift breaks and people who live on ninth floor have to walk up 6 flights of stairs for 3 months. They don't repair the lift immediately, don't know why, probably to save money for themselves. Really annoying given that if exam season is approaching
It's a relatively nice and clean place but they never reply to my emails about deposit of £250 after I left them. I have sent them 5 emails trying to ask for my deposit and they never reply
Great for student nurses, really comfy and nicely located.
Taken away from uni completely and i hated being away from friends. Rooms are nice though, sad the uni had to resort to outting me in a flat with morons tho
Great location, friendly staff
IQ Birmingham is an accommodation that no UoB students have heard of. No one applies to it and when you don't get any of your choses you are given IQ. It's far away from UoB and doesn't give you the university halls experience you would receive on the Vale. This being said, however, it's great value for ensuite accommodation- much less than you'd pay for ensuite on the vale. It is clean and well maintained. Any issues are always quickly resolved! It's near town and broad street which is a benefit and it's also close to the station. The rooms are good size with loads of storage! I've actually loved my flat and my room but the commute is a shame!!
