I was there when it was on meal plan and it is the best choice. Nice to have the option to cook myself though. Just the location is a little far from the uni but idea For clubbing on Broad street

All the Answers You Need About Student Accommodation
What tenancy length do I need?
Some students choose to stay during the academic year, whilst others – particularly international students – require a tenancy that covers the entire year. You can also find student accommodation that is available for one or two terms, classified as a “short stay” on our search filters.
Should I stay in catered student accommodation?
This is totally up to you! Catered accommodation means you will be served meals at set times in a dining hall, and you’ll likely have access to fewer kitchen facilities than if you were to stay in self-catered accommodation.
What is a guarantor and do I need one?
A guarantor is a person who signs a contract to agree to pay your rent if you are unable to. Most university accommodation requires a guarantor, and this applies to both domestic and international students.
Will I need to pay a deposit on student accommodation?
Most likely, yes, you’ll need to pay a deposit. This will be refunded at the end of your stay as long as there is no damage to the room or property.
What bills will my rent include?
If you are staying in university-run accommodation or private halls, your rent should include any utilities such as electricity, gas, water, and internet. Students are not required to pay council tax, however you may need to fill in an exemption form so make sure you check with your local council.
What is purpose-built student accommodation?
Purpose-built student accommodation (PBSA) are residential buildings designed for students. They are often located close to campus, boast modern facilities, include all bills, and often have staff on site to assist residents.
Will my student accommodation be furnished?
Student accommodation is typically fully furnished. Your room should include at least a bed, clothes storage, desk and chair. You’ll likely need to bring things such as bedding and kitchen utensils, but we have a full list here of everything you’ll need.

One time my flatmate got locked INTO her room and the staff took 2 hours to get there. Outside bins emptied semi regularly but not enough for how many students uses it- no social space in elgar, but some in other places. A longer walk than advertised (told 15 mins but was more like 25).

Elgar Court is a convenient option for students who prioritize location and campus life. While there are a few areas that could be improved like hosting more regular and diverse social events for residents could strengthen the sense of community and improve the social experience, especially for those who are new to the city or university. However, It provides a solid living experience for those studying at the University of Birmingham.
Thank you for your feedback about your experiences living in Elgar Court. It’s really important that our residents feel part of a community whilst living on site and so your suggestions about improving the social activities will be fed back to the Reslife Event Activators. The main advantage of Elgar Court is it has the best kitchens (much bigger than most others and recently refurbished). This is important as a social gathering space as the bedrooms are suitable for one person not ten. It supports a good student experience but isn’t the be all and end all- the personalities of your flat mates will have a bigger impact on how well you settle.
s*** never go to elgar court if you value your life and mental health
One of the furthest accommodations on the vale which can suck on rainy/cold days. Takes approximately 25 mins to walk to campus or 8 mins to cycle along the canal route. I recommend investing in a bike before you come, the surrounding blocks have their own indoor key-coded bike sheds. Meal plan is definitely a rip-off. Food is overpriced so most students end up using their £55 allowance before the end of the week resulting in spending more money to shop for food for the weekend. A single piece of fruit is 60p and sandwiches are on average £3.50. You can't use meal plan at the local Costcutter either - something I was told I could do on an open day. The rooms are a good size and the desks are huge which was a main reason I chose Elgar. Beds aren't comfy so invest in a thick mattress topper. Shower rooms are ok, all starting to get a bit run down with age but still decent. Kitchens are BRAND NEW and a very large size - major plus for flat parties. Heating and internet are good.
Elgar Court is acthally really nice, alright sized rooms and amazing kitchens. But my shower never worked ever, was always freezing or broken, our hot water cut out all the time. Location isn't as big as a problem that everyone is making it out to be. It's so annoying because all the uni have to do is update the bedrooms a bit more so that the bathrooms aren't totally falling apart and the accomodation would be quite good. If you're choosing between this and maple bank DEFINITELY choose maple bank. Half the price and just as nice, the bathrooms are even nicer
It's pretty amazing. The only thing I realise now that Meal plan probably isn't worth it, and I can't get it without changing accommodation. And after 2,5 weeks of asking we still haven't got a kitchen bin
I chose this accommodation due to the fact that I wished to have an ensuite which is a blessing (particularly after a heavy night out). The bathroom was faultless- however my room grew mould throughout the year. Furthermore the flat was left without an oven and a fridge for the first four weeks. Upon arrival the hall was also flooded. These flats are aging and not in the best state of repair. THERE ARE NEWER FLATS- AND ELGAR COURT IS SIMPLY NOT WORTH £7K PLUS WHEN YOU MAKE THE COMPARISONS. The shared space in the flat is great for socialising- the only problem is our flat was about 1 of 4 socialable flats in the whole of Elgar court. Therefore if you are looking for a more socialable experience I'd suggest looking elsewhere. However I was lucky due to the fact that I found a few like minded friends in my block. I suggest trying to make friends early in your freshers week so that you are able to at least enjoy your down time from education in what is otherwise a very dead complex.
Had an amazing time at Elgar met some amazing people not just in my flat but the whole block, very social and great communal areas to say its on meal plan (big kitchen for pres is a real bonus)
Elgar Court was most definitely the best decision I could've made. I have tonnes of friends not only in my flat but also my block, meal plan is so convenient and so near to us, and the rooms and kitchen are massive.
Really good bedroom, bathroom and kitchen size. It's just right at the top of the Vale which can feel like a long walk sometimes.
Really nice for what it costs. Only annoying thing is it's furthest from the uni (on the vale village), however it does mean I don't have to exercise in other ways as walking up the hill is enough- and its not even that bad. Huge rooms with large desk and really nice showers! Internet is really good, although it did go out for a few days after a power cut but was solved pretty fast.
the walk to uni is horrible but we're also a good distance from town. We had a lot of problems when we moved in (broken freezer and heating etc) but they were fixed quite quick. It's really social able here and easy to meet people all over the vale!
Elgar flats are so nice and great for socializing in once you've found friends, but everyone is pretty anti-sociable because it's mostly international students. Make sure you forge friendships in freshers and plan pre drinks with people so that you have people to socialize with after freshers is over!! It took us until second term to realize this and now we've got a good group of friends the year is almost over.
