the environment is beautiful with lots of trees and flowers.the traffic is very convenient cos there are many bus stations around the university
nothing nothing nothing nothing
To be honest, I don’t know how many societies there are and how to join them.
I fell it is grea, the staff are kind
Once in class there was a strong smell of gasoline in the classroom.
Very very very very good for me. I am speechless cus it is really fantastic, no word can express my feeling.
this university is pretty good,
Students, teachers and student organizations are very friendly
clubs and societies are useless at all. We need to pay for everything ourselves and they do not deserve it.
Every thing is good, library is helpful for us. I’m not the native student and will get back home country after graduate, so unable to give specific review of careers service
Great experience ad enjoys clubs and societies at University of Southampton.
Only spent a year there, but nothing specific to complain about.
I studied at Winchester school of arts, I did Masters, and I would NOT recommend anyone to do an MA here especially if u are a home student, it was a waste of time and money and had a terrible student experience, I felt treated as just a number and the course had no standard at all, just about anyone can apply and as long as they are paying the university didn't care. The facilities are there, its just a shame that the senior staff are pathetic, unprofessional and bias. Even after complaints from students the university did nothing. There were no scocity or chance to socialise and didn't have university feel like you would get at highfield campus.
It is a good experience studying at university of Southampton.
University of southampton is great if you want a proper campus feel. Level of teaching is hit and miss.. there are great lecturer's, however, there are also lecturer's who are not so great.
I’m almost at the end of an Mres Microbiology degree at Southampton, it’s been the biggest mistake I’ve made to come here. It’s pretty clear my supervisors made up my masters research project on the spot and hardly researched it so there’s a huge mistake in the theory behind it that I’ve had to work around. Teaching is poor quality, I once had to explain to a lecturer the theory behind a diagram she had up because she forgot how it worked in front of the class. I eventually stopped going to lectures in my second term and still managed to get a first for every bit of coursework. I’ve had no support with my lab work, the postgrads are helpful but my supervisors have completely given up and left me to save the project for myself. It’s been an absolute joke to try and accomplish such a demanding project with such little help and support, I’ve been on my own in the lab since day 1. Very glad it’s almost over. Please if you’re thinking of pursuing environmental microbiology, stay well away!
The campus is very green and has fantastic student facilities. The clubs and societies are very varied and friendly, but suffer from the fact that new members can only really be gained immediately after a bunfight, and then mostly from 1st years (they need more campus and online presence, is what I'm saying). The Students Union is always friendly and approachable and has a very large media presence. The WiFi is acceptable across campus.
friendly clubs and good social activity
The university isn't "bad". But something is amiss. They claim to be supportive but a few students have actually committed suicide in recent years. If you aren't middle class you will feel very out of place. Even more so if you commute. It has been the worst time of my entire life. Seriously. Grades seem to be almost random and I am CONVINCED that assignments are not anonymously marked. The student office has let me down 90% of the time and nobody seems to know what they're doing, and although they claim to be in favour of free speech, they have an extremely left wing agenda. Judgemental and intolerant socialists everywhere. Never in my life have I felt so out of place. Some modules will recycle last years material, and then you have to work out what is and what isn't related to the assignments. One module even had old essay questions that we weren't supposed to do from last year still being handed out... embarrassing. The librarians have always been very helpful however.
Being on the Winchester campus, there are no societies or clubs barley so have to travel to southampton.
I’m two years into my graphic design course at WSA and I can sadly say it’s the biggest mistake I’ve ever made and paid for. Where do I begin? Paying for everything eg trips, stationery (glue , scissors printing etc), the extremely rude and negative staff and lecturers, being patronised and made to feel like a school student, the “lecturers” being late, the extremely useless and unrelated workshops or the tiny amount we’re in out of the year. I am so disappointed and let down how it has been nothing like I was told it would be at the first open day. Fast forward me too this time next year when I’m done with the place. Did I say it’s not worth a penny out of the £9250? P.S only in one day a week at the moment - tell me what I’m paying for! Disgraceful
It was an amazing experience as it was the first time i had lived away from my family. I learned so much not only in uni but out of it too about home management and organisation.
The University of Southampton was one of the worst experiences of my life. During my time there, the stress of lectures (with very poor teaching), keeping up with course work and the horrible and very boring city caused my mental health to rapidly decline. Despite me telling staff multiple times, at no point did any one reach out to me or try and help my situation. I told the university multiple times that I was experiencing a mental health crisis but not one seemed to care. Nightlife in Southampton is good but to be honest that's all that's good about the city! It quickly becomes boring with nothing to do, other than study or get drunk. The university itself is very dull with poor teaching and support. The students union is only open for social events during freshers, and then closes for the rest of the year (so is awful, basically). If you are a high achiever like I was then you're probably considering studying at Southampton - I am telling you that you deserve so much more.
Great facilities, food is a bit pricey but there’s a massive selection, the SU bar is cool and the club can be sick if you go on a good night
Just finished my first year, absolutely love it here! The campus is gorgeous, nightlife is really good and as long as you attend your lectures and work hard you'll do really well. The facilities are really good too with a massive library. The city is in a good location with Winchester, Bournemouth and the new forest very close. It also is big enough for students to find a part time job alongside uni, which I have. Some people say that it is a high crime area, but I've never personally experienced any problems, crime rate is around the same as other cities. I've heard of stealing from student homes but generally if you are cautious you should be OK! Love it here and would definitely recommend.
I regret coming to soton , especially for podiatry. Most lecturers are good but some will look at you as if you are inferior to them and treat you differently. I have also seen forms or prejudice in terms of race, this can be observed from feedback on coursework (we are student who talk with one another, just like lecturers talk to one another). I have managed to get a job after studying here but this is probably due to demand rather the quality of education provided by the team. I really doubt coursework are assessed anonymously, I can actually guarantee this. If you are of a certain ethnicity then you will have some form of privilege, if this is what you wish to be accredited then this university for you. Some placement are awful and do not give you hands on experience, but they do not care, hence your marks are based on luck.
Decent uni with a good union and lecturers who adapt based upon feedback from Students. Good city to live in with the highlight being the notorious Jesters nightclub.
I worked for 10 years at Southampton University PhD and several Fellowships/Postdocs: I just waste my time! Staff is unprofessional, low quality of teaching, lectures are focus to catch money but they don't care about students. Some young lectures enjoy to bully students or push students to catch other money. Many grants are from charities so please avoid to donate the money is wasted. There is no career at all, except for people that had already someone in the University as father, mother, sisters or relatives. i-solutions are horrible and not helpful. I am very happy that to be out from the system: Please avoid this place!!!!
Buzzing campus with lots of great facilities such as the library, students union and sports centre. Also the university has great bus links with the bus interchange in the middle of the Highfield campus.
overall a very good university with a great reputation
Buzzing campus with lots of facilities to offer such as an excellent library, students union and bus services to and from the university.
Love the uni campus, library is good, but not enough computers and general seating space for exam term! Prices in SU and on campus are a bit expensive though for students
ok enjoying it and can't complain
I lile it but I was supposed to be on Avenue - what the f*** happened?
Good campus, good location, everything's good
Internet is very unpredictable. Career information provided which is good.
As long as the money gets in, that is all they care about. Expensive university with very low standards.
Please don't go to the Maths department of University of Southampton. You can't choose your final year project. For example, I am forced to write an non-technical essay on "GCSE attainment gap is revealed" in my final year, which counts a lot in my degree classification. They explained the reason of not allowing choices as "you can't choose what you do in a workplace." Also, in contrast to most university where students receive more individual support in dissertation, the department clearly instruct staff from helping student. Last year's student even has no supervisor, and now the department thinks they are "generous". Finally, the course is poorly designed. We need to write our dissertation 2 weeks before winter break. We actually has only 2 weeks time to write it. Most importantly, you must take this project, it is compulsory.
Great Uni and loads to do so you're never bored.
Great internet, very good administration. Although it isn't a campus which kills it a little. Still great campus and great things to do. Amazing night life
I love studying here, it's so pretty and interesting. Great uni
The best uni - loved every minute of it. The teaching by law lecturers is amazing and the support provided is unparalleled. Campus is beautiful. Students are friendly and down to Earth. Best place to be!
My first 2 years have been absolutely amazing, and the sense of community at Southampton is wonderful... The only problem I've found is uni/student contact, where lecturers and tutors aren't particularly organised but... That's not really a major issue :)
Really good experience overall
Southampton campus is beautiful in a different way each season, and there is ALWAYS something going on. It's lively, it's engaged, and if you want to do something that there isn't a society for, it's so easy to get nine of your friends together and form a new one. I've loved pretty much everything about Southampton this year (my first year), especially the free bus pass which comes in enormously handy. I'm on Avenue Campus most of the time which is a gorgeous old building, and only small so you see the same faces all the time, which is quite comforting and gives the place a really homely, family-like atmosphere. All lecturers were fab, and my personal tutor was so nice and always made herself available if I needed to talk about any issues I had on the academic side of things. There's also top support on the pastoral side of the fence, most of which is anonymous. I can't say enough good about Southampton. Genuinely there has not been one moment I've thought 'maybe I chose the wrong uni'
Best first year of uni I could have asked for
It's a great place for students
Very good, friendly environment
Good campus, great student's union. All you could ask for from a uni.
It's a good university, but the Internet in halls was terrible, you have to join the gym to join quite a few sports club, which is you're struggling for money doesn't help. Other than that I like the uni and the campus.
Brilliant university , very enjoyable
Couldn't have asked for a better place to start living by myself - easy, conveniently placed and great people.
Brilliant university with a very intimate and friendly feel on campus, facilities second to none and teaching just as good
A genuinely lovely environment to continue your higher education. The campus is compact and this ensures that you 1. don't feel too insignificant when joining the university and 2. means that walking between lecture theatres and the student union buildings is never a chore. The campus and most importantly it's halls, are very green, with lots of green space and trees to shelter under when revising during summer. The surrounding areas of Portswood and Highfield are abundant with student houses when looking to move on from halls in second year. There is a varied and exciting social calendar at this university, with plenty of societies ranging from performing arts to student radio, TV through to sports. Nightlife is a definite plus here in Southampton. Unlike many of the campus universities positioned on the outskirts of town, a huge selection of clubs are only a short bus journey or even walk away! Jesters is the home of the Southampton student and luckily it's 10 minutes away max!
Good teaching, supportive staff etc.
Beautiful campus, lovely Uni, amazing student life.
It's ranked as a top uni for a reason!
Dedicated lecturers. Amazing lecture layout. Many places for study. 24/7 library facility. Hundreds of societies and groups to join. Beautiful campus.
Cons?
Open plan library means it can get loud
loved it until i saw better
Large number of societies, great night life with so many clubs and student nights. Generally very lovely people at the university, all like minded and down to earth. small enough to get to know a lot of the students, recognise familiar faces and feel at home. Always sunny and stuff to do if you find it!
Cons?
Great uni but situated in quite a rough area with high levels of crime. Teaching standards vary majorly depending on you're degree, it may be a great uni for engineering or medicine but suffers in other departments. Although there are many societies it is very easy for students to get lost, if they do not have a specific interest, for example a sport they play, it becomes harder to socialise and students often remove themselves from the student union community. As there is so much nightlife in southampton the union fails to hold decent nights for their students. When compared to my friends universities, e.g. Bristol, Nottingham, warwick etc, i felt let down by southampton, with a less attractive campus and lack of social spaces for students as well as poorer quality halls and the removed option of catered halls which i think holds a special quality for a university.
