All the Answers You Need About Student Accommodation

What tenancy length do I need?

Some students choose to stay during the academic year, whilst others – particularly international students – require a tenancy that covers the entire year. You can also find student accommodation that is available for one or two terms, classified as a “short stay” on our search filters.

Should I stay in catered student accommodation?

This is totally up to you! Catered accommodation means you will be served meals at set times in a dining hall, and you’ll likely have access to fewer kitchen facilities than if you were to stay in self-catered accommodation.

What is a guarantor and do I need one?

A guarantor is a person who signs a contract to agree to pay your rent if you are unable to. Most university accommodation requires a guarantor, and this applies to both domestic and international students.

Will I need to pay a deposit on student accommodation?

Most likely, yes, you’ll need to pay a deposit. This will be refunded at the end of your stay as long as there is no damage to the room or property.

What bills will my rent include?

If you are staying in university-run accommodation or private halls, your rent should include any utilities such as electricity, gas, water, and internet. Students are not required to pay council tax, however you may need to fill in an exemption form so make sure you check with your local council.

What is purpose-built student accommodation?

Purpose-built student accommodation (PBSA) are residential buildings designed for students. They are often located close to campus, boast modern facilities, include all bills, and often have staff on site to assist residents.

Will my student accommodation be furnished?

Student accommodation is typically fully furnished. Your room should include at least a bed, clothes storage, desk and chair. You’ll likely need to bring things such as bedding and kitchen utensils, but we have a full list here of everything you’ll need.

Depending on your campus it is okay, but it is hard to justify the price jump unless you use their gym

Lived here for my first year at uni. Overpriced and gross. Pros: I was very lucky to live with great people and managed to not go crazy with the lack of socializing bc of covid. Tube/sainsbury's/uni is within walking distance. Wifi is decent when it works. Reception will receive your mail and it's easy to pick up. Cons:My room literally looks like a prison cell, despite all my efforts to make it cute with posters and decoration.Everything in it is dated and gross. Bathroom is tiny, takes 5 business days to air out after a 5 minute shower. Terrible bed/ mattress, invest in a good mattress topper if you don't want back problems. Fire alarm drives you insane EVERY friday 11am. Radiator does nothing to heat and smells gross. Security will pick on you for sitting in your own kitchen at 10pm for no reason. I hated every second of living here and I can't even get my money back for leaving early. Felt like I was a paying to be a slave!

It's very expensive for a small room which honestly feels a bit like a prison room. The en-suite bathroom is nice, it consists of a toilet, sink and shower (although my shower flooded if you had it on for more than 10 minutes). It's very secure - there is a lock to the outside, then a lock to your corridor (shared with 5 other people) and then a lock to your own room. Very safe. The kitchen is big but very unsocial. It echoes which makes it really hard to actually talk to your flatmates, and there is no sofa or social space, it is very much only there to cook in. Honestly I found this halls to be a bit isolating. Supermarket (Sainsbury's) is a 10 minute walk, Harrow on the Hill town centre is a 15 min walk in the other direction or one stop on the tube. Honestly if you can spare a bit extra money I'd heavily recommend another halls.

I had a very bad experience at the University of Westminster. The teaching methods and the teachers are completely useless. Really big waste of money as no one is there to actually teach anything. A part from the facilities and the photography technicians everything else is really bad trained and not helpful at all. I studied Contemporary Media Practice, and I think there is nothing worse then that course. Anything I learned is what I learned from internet, the only good things are the facilities and the fact that you can use them ( when they work, cause if they don't work, they take a very long time to fix them).

First, the good. The staff here are fantastic; smily, helpful and on the ball. Also - as the occupant of a standard room - the desk is quite good, with ample shelving room above and a wide expanse which extends into a dresser. Also, the plugs (et al) all seem to work, and any fixes which need doing are generally taken care of upon notice. However, that's generally where the buck stops. I fully regret living here. The social facilities are poor; the shared kitchens are functional, but difficult. They are an egregious area for socialising, and the single shared oven/hob, makes it exceedingly difficult during meal times... naturally leading to anti-social single occupant at a time policy for the kitchens. Also, mattresses are uncomfortable, crinkly and sweaty. The hot water in showers is highly inconsistent. And the heaters seem to burn alive upon touch, but only emit a humid odour. Yes, being on campus is helpful but - as others alluded - you're more prisoner here than student.

Staff here are amazing, cannot fault any of them. The security are absolute gems. Getting back home from a night out in central can be tricky and very expensive, so bare that in mind. It’s a blessing being a 3 min walk away from uni & a 2 min walk away from the tube. Need more social areas in the kitchen, even a little sofa would make it so much more sociable.

Horrible I'm literally in the middle of my year here... we have fire alarms checked every Friday morning doesn't matter the time they'll test them. it's completely out of the way of anything decent within London as well as over priced, you'll not have any money by the time you move in. be thrown together with people you'll likely not become friends with or even in the same course as. As well I was playing guitar at 9:30pm I say playing, barely touching the strings I had a security guard knock on my door and tell me to quiet down! WHILE there were two people in my kitchen literally screaming at each other. the other night at about 12am me and others got shouted at by security telling us all to go to our own rooms because we were standing outside talking to each other. A night a lot of people are out I've heard people at 3am screaming. They act as if this is a prison. bathrooms always smell wet and have mold. cleaners will come into your room if you're not there, 0% privacy here..

Possibly the worst-run student accommodation facility in England. The staff are incredibly bad at communication and are very inconsistent. The rooms and kitchen are standard yet considerably overpriced. However, the halls are very close to Northwick Park tube station and the Wifi speed is very good. I would not recommend.

From my year here, seriously The worst halls ever, the bathrooms are horrible like a wet room they always smell, had my macbook stolen from the kitchen, staff are useless, wifi always goes off, the hot water always turns off, the sink gets blocked, the value for money is cheap but definitely not worth any of the cost, better off staying at victoria halls or raffles, please stay away from here the most useless accomodation ever.

Decent location. About 15-20 minute walk from a Sainsbury's or Tesco. 25ish minute journey into the centre of London on one line, so that's good. Internet was okay, but would sometimes go out, leaving you no way to upload assignments. Hot water would go off too much, leaving you unable to shower. Everybody I met was kind and sociable. You can drink in the kitchens together, but music needs to be off (or quiet) by 11, otherwise the security will come. Only four bar stools per flat, even though there's six people in a flat, and you can't bring in extra seating. No real area for socialising in the flat, apart from one common room between the entire accommodation, which was okay. Cleaners come into kitchen and do a good job! Value for money rated low as when you pay £162 a week, you don't expect to lose internet, or have a tiny room or even lose hot water for hours on end. And that 11am Friday fire alarm, god... Good people there, but pretty pricey. But what do you expect in London? :)

I had an amazing year living in halls, but I think that is due to the amazing people I lived with. The rooms are tight, but comfortable, and you have the luxury of your own ensure bathroom (however it's tiny and often has mold). The kitchen is a good space, but there is no comfortable seating if you all want to hang out. Cons: fire alarm EVERY Friday at 11am, good morning! Security and cleaning can be very picky! It's tough to keep everything perfectly clean as a student living with 5 others. Not everyone has the time to do their dishes every night. If the kitchens are too messy cleaners are allowed to leave notes, and after a certain number money comes out of your deposit. (Fyi cleaners themselves benefit from this because they are compensated for 'dealing with your mess'). It's a great location considering you only need 5min to et to your lecture if you study at the harrow campus. But it is 20min by tube into London. Despite the cons I had a good time, but be prepared.

(Standard) - the rooms themselves are quite small in comparison to other uni halls I've seen but have the lovely addition of an ensuite shower room These halls aren't too bad they certainly could be worse. 24 hour security - and patrols through the night 24 hour reception Decent sized shared kitchen
