All the Answers You Need About Student Accommodation
What tenancy length do I need?
Some students choose to stay during the academic year, whilst others – particularly international students – require a tenancy that covers the entire year. You can also find student accommodation that is available for one or two terms, classified as a “short stay” on our search filters.
Should I stay in catered student accommodation?
This is totally up to you! Catered accommodation means you will be served meals at set times in a dining hall, and you’ll likely have access to fewer kitchen facilities than if you were to stay in self-catered accommodation.
What is a guarantor and do I need one?
A guarantor is a person who signs a contract to agree to pay your rent if you are unable to. Most university accommodation requires a guarantor, and this applies to both domestic and international students.
Will I need to pay a deposit on student accommodation?
Most likely, yes, you’ll need to pay a deposit. This will be refunded at the end of your stay as long as there is no damage to the room or property.
What bills will my rent include?
If you are staying in university-run accommodation or private halls, your rent should include any utilities such as electricity, gas, water, and internet. Students are not required to pay council tax, however you may need to fill in an exemption form so make sure you check with your local council.
What is purpose-built student accommodation?
Purpose-built student accommodation (PBSA) are residential buildings designed for students. They are often located close to campus, boast modern facilities, include all bills, and often have staff on site to assist residents.
Will my student accommodation be furnished?
Student accommodation is typically fully furnished. Your room should include at least a bed, clothes storage, desk and chair. You’ll likely need to bring things such as bedding and kitchen utensils, but we have a full list here of everything you’ll need.

Great value for money, the staff is extremely kind, lovely place to stay and they’re always holding nice activities for the residents to get involved in which is brilliant. Clean, spacious and modern facilities, good security. Definitely recommend !!
Best hall ever for me 😜 because it's just next to my halls and great receptionist with good level of humor
This is my second year at Leighton and I still continue to love it! Especially with our new social area! They do have a love and care for all the students, even when things go wrong they’re quick to solving solutions
It's one of the best university accomodation to live in
Just had a great stay! Clean, comfy rooms, and fantastic communal areas. Overall good
Good accommodation and location.
Budget friendly and the best! The staffs make sure that we are pampered with free goodies 😉
Great experience at Leighton Hall
was a bit late moving into preston after commuting for the first 2 weeks so leighton was my only option. it’s really cheap for what it is. i’m not making any friends in my flat though, and no one uses the social space downstairs. a couple things were broken and dirty when i moved in.
the old members of staff were the best, but ever since the new manager has taken over, the accommodation has gone DOWNHILL seriously. the office is never open, its always unclean, the laundry is overpriced and she clearly doesn't know how to run an accommodation. The only thing that is great about the accommodation is the wifi, but everything else has gone down hill. The receptionist has left, which is ashame as the old manager and receptionist were the best but this new manager has made leighton terrible to live in and alot of people have either moved out to new accomodation or just left as leighton halls is definitely not worth it
So the previous staff who were kind and helpful have now unfortunately left. The only good thing at the moment is the maintenance team. The out-of-hours security number is a waste of time and suggest dangerous solutions. the rooms are very small and outdated and require a lot of modernising. The office is only open for a short few hours a day. The laundry room is disgusting and is left very unclean, I had to scoop tuna pasta out of the washing drum. In the contract, it says all communal living areas are cleaned by a cleaner which includes kitchens. However, this year there have been no cleaners in any kitchens and the corridors are left disgusting. Don't come here if you don't want to live in a crusty flat.
Lived here for two years, the Leighton hall team were all fantastic, always available to chat to
Lovely staff and best bang for buck for student halls
Having stayed before as a Master's Degree student, coming back to Leighton Hall for my PhD studies was the only solution. Cannot agree more with what other residents have said; great value-for-money, the management does their best to match you with suitable residents, they consider complaints and take up action immediately. Due to the current circumstances, I haven't been able to spend as much time there as I've wanted, but I can't wait to return there for the remaining of my third year.
Leighton halls was amazing, stayed here for 2 years in a row and had the best time! Janine and Tina from the office are the best staff and helped make the experience. The rest of the staff are all great and they help with anything straight away!
tina and janine we’re both so lovely and always happy to help with any problems we had! was a lively place to live!
It's a great place and good placement of location. Great value for money
The staff are friendly, approachable and helpful and the rooms are great value for money.
Rooms and bed are a decent size for the price, right next to uni buildings and a 5 minute walk from shops. Don't have to share the kitchen with too many people and staff clean it pretty well either way. WiFi problems sometimes but its fixed pretty quick, same for other stuff that breaks, I have a friend at another accommodation who gets nothing fixed. Laundry room tends to be pretty busy and is only small but it's not the worst. Common room is okay but I don't really use it or know anyone who does. Office staff are lovely and very helpful and hardworking. Great value for money and I'll likely keep living here for the rest of my degree.
Wifi works sometimes and the cleaners don’t always come in. But great friendly environment and the staff are always happy to help.
I enjoyed living in Leighton in general, especially very nice in the Summer, can lay down in the grass within the hall with sunshine. The weekly rent is reasonable at all comparing to other accommodations. Enjoyed the TV with a large shared kitchen, get socialised with my roommates for sharing food and watching movies together. There are also some great social activity to get to know about someone else live in the accommodation. The WIFI connection is good in general, no issues with watching movies and doing my assignment or playing games . Also enjoy the reception service provided by Tina and Jannie. Never missed my parcel or letters. I have a wonderful time of living in Leighton Hall, and met with lovely persons had there. HM
Leighton Hall is a really great place to live while a student at UCLan. The rooms are spacious, well maintained and very comfortable. The staff are super helpful and approachable.
I have had a wonderful experience living at Leighton Hall! My Studio flat meets my needs, any issues are resolved in good time, the WiFi is great, the accommodation staff are a delight and the location is perfect. Leighton Hall keeps improving every year since i've been here!
Great rooms for a great price and the reception staff are absolutely lovely
Even through COVID I felt welcomed and safe
The staff were absolutely lovely and the accomodation is in a great location. Its near town and nice area.
Staff are lovely and get stuff done quickly
Great place to live, staff are super friendly and helpful and I've had a great time studying while living here. Just around the corner from my main building which certainly helped when I was late for lectures!
Best value at uclan, great staff, can't go wrong
Staff are friendly and helpful, rooms are nice and there’s lots of storage. Great place to live :)
The staff are very cool and friendly..
Pleasant experience with great staff. Good value for money with good enough internet and property management.
I have lived here for my whole three years at university, it is really good value for money.
The best things I liked about Leighton was the room itself, the rooms are modern with lots of storage and the bathroom is a nice size. The kitchens are ok,considering I had the en-suite plus room the kitchen was the smallest I’ve seen. But there is lots of storage and it’s a good area for social gatherings. The worst parts about it is how hard it is to get parking round there, I ended up paying for UCLan parking as there are very limited spaces at Leighton and is an additional cost.
Overall, I have had a good experience at Leighton Halls despite the pandemic, however I’ve found that sometimes the wifi goes quite slow.
awful, had so many problems including noise, silverfish, and rats. Not a good place to live at all. When I moved back into leighton halls this year, both my toilet seat and shower head was broken. Had a major silverfish problem which took ages to get sorted. Would not reccommend to ANYONE
I have stayed at Leighton hall for 3 years and I do like it here, the value for money is great, en suite, large kitchens, rooms large enough for student activities, it is great. cleaning of the kitchens has, in effect, not happened this year and the walls are quite thin so other tenants being obnoxious can be heard throughout the building.
