Love it here, rooms is just the size that I was expecting. I get along with my roommates very well and the halls team regularly check on our flat.

All the Answers You Need About Student Accommodation

What tenancy length do I need?

Some students choose to stay during the academic year, whilst others – particularly international students – require a tenancy that covers the entire year. You can also find student accommodation that is available for one or two terms, classified as a “short stay” on our search filters.

Should I stay in catered student accommodation?

This is totally up to you! Catered accommodation means you will be served meals at set times in a dining hall, and you’ll likely have access to fewer kitchen facilities than if you were to stay in self-catered accommodation.

What is a guarantor and do I need one?

A guarantor is a person who signs a contract to agree to pay your rent if you are unable to. Most university accommodation requires a guarantor, and this applies to both domestic and international students.

Will I need to pay a deposit on student accommodation?

Most likely, yes, you’ll need to pay a deposit. This will be refunded at the end of your stay as long as there is no damage to the room or property.

What bills will my rent include?

If you are staying in university-run accommodation or private halls, your rent should include any utilities such as electricity, gas, water, and internet. Students are not required to pay council tax, however you may need to fill in an exemption form so make sure you check with your local council.

What is purpose-built student accommodation?

Purpose-built student accommodation (PBSA) are residential buildings designed for students. They are often located close to campus, boast modern facilities, include all bills, and often have staff on site to assist residents.

Will my student accommodation be furnished?

Student accommodation is typically fully furnished. Your room should include at least a bed, clothes storage, desk and chair. You’ll likely need to bring things such as bedding and kitchen utensils, but we have a full list here of everything you’ll need.

Gilwell is a very small cozy accommodation and the flat system here is really well maintained. Overall it is a good accommodation for international students specifically

I had my reservations about Giwell at first, but honestly great choice of accommodation. You don't realise how convenient it is to be so close until its 8:50am and you have to get to your lecture for 9am and you are still early. Room was also larger than I thought it was going to be. Overall, just amazing. Going - Second Year International Student

defo the most social halls, which is great for pre drinks. The rooms themselves arent actually that bad and the toilet and shower are quite nice. It does get noisy sometimes, especially wednesday nights, but u get so used to it that when u go back home the quietness is strange. Its so close to the uni, su and 2 night clubs which is great for nights out. Its cleaned twice a week and the cleaners are friendly. Best of all, its the cheapest halls

Due to the location and nose location, sleep isn't a given. Often woken up by fire alarms and drunk students coming home. Problems take a long time to resolve. Good if you are young and just looking to drink. If you are a bit older and want to do serious studying then I wouldn't bother.

My experience at Gilwell was not great. All the buildings and rooms need renovating as the paint looks horrible and there are holes in the ceilings and walls. The cleanliness isn't great, included in our bills we get cleaning, however it is never done or is done to a poor standard. Sleep is never guaranteed due to being so close to clubs, fire alarms at 6 in the morning or RA's walking through the flat slamming doors. The staff are rude and unhelpful. Overall I am very disappointed with the accommodation, think twice before coming here. There are loads of lovely halls in Plymouth that you can make a home, not these.

Staff members are unfriendly and treat you like children even when your over the age of 30. Staff have attitude when you ask for the address of your room. Place smells very bad due to the fact that pigeons fly in through all the windows. Cleaners normally forget to clean or hoover even though we pay for this. Reception has lost 3 of my parcels I ordered from amazon even though I have written evidence from amazon stating time and date of when/where it was delivered, Fire alarm regularly goes of and wakes me up in the middle of the night. Shower was cold for 5 weeks and staff did nothing about it. This place is not fit for purpose and you can find much cheaper elsewhere. The only positive I found was the fact that the staff help you move in on arrival.

Very goods halls, well looked after close to uni and very good value for money, doesn't deserve the nickname the ghetto.

Despite the lack of communal space, there are so many opportunities to meet new people. All flats are single sex which, on the face of it, may not be ideal, but in reality it's not too bad. The newly renovated bathroom facilities are great when they don't leak and if they do it'll take ages for maintenance to fix it, probably because you're in the 'ghetto'. Gilwell has a more social layout of rooms than Robbins hall so a pre drinks party in the corridor is a laugh until you're kicked out at 11. In all, GIlwell is the cheapest accommodation and isn't actually as grotty as everyone makes out - just remember the fairy lights.

Good value for money however as there's no proper common room or place for all the block to chill isn't very comfortable when friends come round . Basically need bigger kitchens and sofas and tables !

I was pretty disappointed when I was told I was going to be living in Gilwell as it wasn't my 1st choice of accommodation and a lot of the online reviews make it sound awful. But I can honestly say there's no where else i'd rather live in my 1st year, its so sociable (you'll know the names of everyone in your block) and the toilets and showers are much better than the ones in Robbins. The only problem I've had is the noise coming from the 2 night clubs next door, and don't be surprised if you find pigeons in your kitchen as the like to sit on the window cills. Its clean and the RA's are nice, overall I wish someone had told me not to worry about living here. 100%worth the money you'll save on rent too :)

Brilliant as a first year accommodation! Helps you get situated right next to the uni and in the middle of the town! Great value for money, just could do with a social area as the communal areas in each flat are pretty small which can prove a little awkward between 6 people, however if you can't afford the more expensive accommodation, don't be put off by Gilwell as they are no where near as bad as some people make them out! Would definitely recommend.

When comparing the gilwell hall to others around... It really is great for the money. It is located over the road from university. (Can not get any closer) perfect! Hall management are all lovely. You can not help the weekend kithen mess. mostly covered in playing cards and empty bottles but the halls create a outgoing friendly atmosphere to be in. I personally had no issues with wifi throughout the year.

Gilwell has a very bad rep among students, and I can see why having stayed there. However I would not have wanted to stay in another Hall if I could do it again, I had the best experience and met the nicest people I will know for life

Very social accommodation, very close to uni. May be known as the Ghetto but is really not that bad and in my opinion better than Robbins. It's very close to campus and Cuba. Nice and cheap accommodation for a friendly sociable halls of residence. It's a bit tired but that's what makes it so great for 'pre drinks' and parties so forget what others say about it, they will definitely want to come over for a party!
