All the Answers You Need About Student Accommodation
What tenancy length do I need?
Some students choose to stay during the academic year, whilst others – particularly international students – require a tenancy that covers the entire year. You can also find student accommodation that is available for one or two terms, classified as a “short stay” on our search filters.
Should I stay in catered student accommodation?
This is totally up to you! Catered accommodation means you will be served meals at set times in a dining hall, and you’ll likely have access to fewer kitchen facilities than if you were to stay in self-catered accommodation.
What is a guarantor and do I need one?
A guarantor is a person who signs a contract to agree to pay your rent if you are unable to. Most university accommodation requires a guarantor, and this applies to both domestic and international students.
Will I need to pay a deposit on student accommodation?
Most likely, yes, you’ll need to pay a deposit. This will be refunded at the end of your stay as long as there is no damage to the room or property.
What bills will my rent include?
If you are staying in university-run accommodation or private halls, your rent should include any utilities such as electricity, gas, water, and internet. Students are not required to pay council tax, however you may need to fill in an exemption form so make sure you check with your local council.
What is purpose-built student accommodation?
Purpose-built student accommodation (PBSA) are residential buildings designed for students. They are often located close to campus, boast modern facilities, include all bills, and often have staff on site to assist residents.
Will my student accommodation be furnished?
Student accommodation is typically fully furnished. Your room should include at least a bed, clothes storage, desk and chair. You’ll likely need to bring things such as bedding and kitchen utensils, but we have a full list here of everything you’ll need.

Good accommodation. Love the location and decor, but it is too expensive for what if offers.
Staff at Sanctuary are especially helpful. Quickly resolve any issues and act as a friendly space. Key issue with fridge and freezer space. One undercounter fridge shared between five full time medical students has been a continual issue.
Decent location considering its a walk away from the hospital, no social spaces and only 4 washing machines for 6 blocks which always gets so busy.
Nicely situated on the hospital grounds. The flat is very modern and if you’re lucky you get an amazing view to the golf course. Truro is an amazing place and Cornwall has loads of nature and beaches- especially great for spring and summer!
Very good accom Good value for money Better if there were more residential parking spaces Better strength of wifi - sometimes dips in the day
Sanctuary students Tresliske TR1 3GZ My experience was a good one, with regards to the accomodation, facilities and flatmates. The location of the accommodation made my commute to studies very easy as it was only a 3 min walk away from my clinics! Perfect! Washing room was also well kept, security was good, any issues were quickly resolved. The flat was a good size and rooms were well lit and layout was good so it didn’t feel like a box or too dull. Staying here allowed me to explore a new part of Cornwall as well which was nice.
Since this accommodation is outside of the city and aimed at healthcare students placed in the hospital, there are very few social spaces, no social events and the area is quite far from everything. However, most of us arrive in large groups of people we already know on our course and so it’s not really a problem.
Excellent staff and great accommodation! Very good value for money and very close t University campus. Spacious living room and good sized kitchen
Fresh and modern accommodation that was very affordable. A house always feels more homely and is great for hosting but in a cost of living crisis sanctuary was ideal.
The staff at Treliske are super friendly and very efficient at getting stuff done if anything goes wrong. The kitchen design is slightly odd and makes it small so even though there are 5 in a flat, no more than 2 can realistically cook at a time, and even then it's a squeeze. Always super warm which was a life saver during the winter but not so great in summer. However, considering bills were included, it is AMAZING value for money.
It was an amazing year in treliske, the rooms are lovely and cozy and I felt very safe at all times. The staff is so friendly and helpful. This was my favourite accommodation I have lived in during my course.
Great convenient location and great staff
Friendly staff! Great parking! Good washing facilities!
Treslike accommodation in Truro, had a safe environment and living spaces were reasonable and of expected standard. The staff was friendly, helpful, and accessible, a nice area to stay to visit places in and around Cornwall.
I had an amazing time at Treliske, the site was regularly cleaned, management was friendly and were quick to resolve any issues and also the site was as close to the clinical locality as I could have hoped for. It's a place I would be more than happy to recommend to anyone and parking was very close to the accommodation also.
