Some students choose to stay during the academic year, whilst others – particularly international students – require a tenancy that covers the entire year. You can also find student accommodation that is available for one or two terms, classified as a “short stay” on our search filters.
This is totally up to you! Catered accommodation means you will be served meals at set times in a dining hall, and you’ll likely have access to fewer kitchen facilities than if you were to stay in self-catered accommodation.
A guarantor is a person who signs a contract to agree to pay your rent if you are unable to. Most university accommodation requires a guarantor, and this applies to both domestic and international students.
Most likely, yes, you’ll need to pay a deposit. This will be refunded at the end of your stay as long as there is no damage to the room or property.
If you are staying in university-run accommodation or private halls, your rent should include any utilities such as electricity, gas, water, and internet. Students are not required to pay council tax, however you may need to fill in an exemption form so make sure you check with your local council.
Purpose-built student accommodation (PBSA) are residential buildings designed for students. They are often located close to campus, boast modern facilities, include all bills, and often have staff on site to assist residents.
Student accommodation is typically fully furnished. Your room should include at least a bed, clothes storage, desk and chair. You’ll likely need to bring things such as bedding and kitchen utensils, but we have a full list here of everything you’ll need.
Wonderful accommodation that allow unfamiliar students get familiar with the surroundings. Very fast resolving of faults and issues when first moving in

Bit pricey for what you get.. Good location though on campus so you hardly have to walk to get to lectures. Cleaning staff are good. No common rooms at all. No interaction with other flats aside from ocasionsal pres, I only ever spoke to my flat and the flat opposite ours. Didn't think the 'quiz' they made you do to put you with similar people helped. Wifi is decent. Ensuite is small and its a gamble whether the shower takes an age to warm up. Room storage is good. Noise from the SU is quite annoying on weekend nights so just hope you're on a higher floor. Washing machines are in Francis drake so you have to walk but thats not too bad. Mary Newman is good but could be better
Disgusting behaviour from the manager Amanda. Rude and selfish. Absolutely cow.
You're only paying for the location, which is on campus. The security is also good. But it's not worth it. While the room is spacious, our kitchen was very small compared to other halls and even to other floors. There is no social space. The absolute worst things are the fire alarms - since coming back from Christmas, there have been approximately over 10 fire drills which is absolutely ridiculous. Not only are they apparently very over-sensitive, but they are placed in the worst possible place - right next to the bathroom! The distance from the other halls to the main campus is honestly not the worst. Save your money.
My stay at the Mary Newman Hall was short-term. However, it was pleasant. The main advantage of staying at this hall is that it's on campus. This means that you can be where you need to be on campus within 5 mins (gym, laundry, library, etc). Even though you're on campus, Drake Circus and Aramada Shopping Centre are within 10 mins walking distance. Rooms are ensuite but the kitchen is shared (this may be a problem depending on how messy your flatmates are but there is a cleaner that comes in once a week). Some floors can be particularly noisy but again it all depends on where you're placed. The RA's were all really helpful and nice!
Although isn't too bad as I am on campus, the location is amazing, near lectures and the SU and the cleaning is regular and always at an excellent quality, there are some issues. The RA's are nice but don't link the flats well. There have been no events to bond the floors together and as we have no common room, nobody meets each other in the building. This makes these halls not very social.
Have enjoyed it as right on campus, however the wifi is useless (they attempt to fix but never really works). I think you should hope your room is high up as the noise from the SU can get pretty annoying.
Over-priced, staff very unhelpful and looked down on you Large bedrooms and Location was good En-suites were awful, small and cramped
What social area. Isn't one apart from the flat but the RA's try with social weekends and events for the whole building to attend if they want to. Cleaners do your kitchen once a week and bins everyday. Just clean your own space really. Overall you're paying for the luxury to roll outta bed and be in lectures in less than 2 minutes because other halls are more luxurious I must admit.
Great location, nice and comfortable rooms, great atmosphere and the big flats are great socially. A lot of rules and regulations and quite expensive.
Best halls in Plymouth! Location is spot on
Very expensive for the value it is, although I do have the smallest room and bathroom. Having a communal room or living space would make these halls a lot more social and better value for money
My room could use a lot of TLC as there is a lot of wear and tear including a hole in the curtains! It rather noisy in my block and overall not good value for money. Since i live in the city i would have been better off living at home! The only good thing is, the bed is very comfy and the wifi is reasonable.
Overall, good experience, damn expensive though
Social halls always kept clean, rules should be made clear when applying for halls as this may not suit all. In a prime location, staff are supportive and safe and secure. Each room Is decent sized, has a good layout, an en suite and the flat has huge kitchen space. Bit over priced for students even with all the positives but a good place to live in the first year of university.
very expensive and no games room, or TV or sofa unlike other Plymouth halls
Great spot on campus, bars, shops, clubs, restaurants within a minute or two walk!
good location as it is on the campus, which is close to the city centre and clubs, but no food shop is really close wheras many other halls have one right on their door stop. The kitchen/communal area is very basic and plain + the wet rooms have no shelving or anything so not really worth the money.
Lovely RA's and right in the middle of campus
En suite, great view, and I can roll out of bed to get to the lectures which are being held 1 minute away!
