A 10 minute walk from Arts University Plymouth, I found Central Point perfect. You get a double bed and the rooms are so much bigger than my friends’ in other accommodation elsewhere in Plymouth. They are quick with any maintenance issues, a friendly reception desk and 24/7 security.

All the Answers You Need About Student Accommodation

What tenancy length do I need?

Some students choose to stay during the academic year, whilst others – particularly international students – require a tenancy that covers the entire year. You can also find student accommodation that is available for one or two terms, classified as a “short stay” on our search filters.

Should I stay in catered student accommodation?

This is totally up to you! Catered accommodation means you will be served meals at set times in a dining hall, and you’ll likely have access to fewer kitchen facilities than if you were to stay in self-catered accommodation.

What is a guarantor and do I need one?

A guarantor is a person who signs a contract to agree to pay your rent if you are unable to. Most university accommodation requires a guarantor, and this applies to both domestic and international students.

Will I need to pay a deposit on student accommodation?

Most likely, yes, you’ll need to pay a deposit. This will be refunded at the end of your stay as long as there is no damage to the room or property.

What bills will my rent include?

If you are staying in university-run accommodation or private halls, your rent should include any utilities such as electricity, gas, water, and internet. Students are not required to pay council tax, however you may need to fill in an exemption form so make sure you check with your local council.

What is purpose-built student accommodation?

Purpose-built student accommodation (PBSA) are residential buildings designed for students. They are often located close to campus, boast modern facilities, include all bills, and often have staff on site to assist residents.

Will my student accommodation be furnished?

Student accommodation is typically fully furnished. Your room should include at least a bed, clothes storage, desk and chair. You’ll likely need to bring things such as bedding and kitchen utensils, but we have a full list here of everything you’ll need.

I have visited various accomodations and i must say central point is value for money . It is quite spacious. In the previous comments u must have come across that maintenance do enter unnoticed . Even if they do that they don't disturb or misplace anything they just do their jobs. The staff is very polite and helpful

WOULD NEVER BOOK HERE AGAIN I lived in a studio here, and honestly I went home after 3 months. There is NO privacy. Maintenance come in every week and just come in whenever they like. I even had someone from reception showing my room on a Zoom call whilst I wasn’t there which is a complete invade of privacy!! None of the washing machines worked. On Host portal I noted 10 things that were broken and the whole time I was there no one fixed them. We couldn’t go in the communal area. There was VERY loud, long fire alarms early every week, sometimes multiple. Honestly save your money. Isn’t homely AT ALL

The location is nice however the bathrooms and kitchens are outdated and the administration team are unclear when addressing issues that are very important to students.

Covid-19: It has not helped at all and communications regarding the crisis have been so unclear.

Do NOT live here (part 3/3) 7. Third weekend. Tried to do laundry again. Third washing machine still out of order. Select a different cycle. Same thing happened. Had to wash it twice to just get the smell out. Not using dryers because it just wasting £1.70 to get your laundry back slightly less wet. 8. Come back to my room. Notice that the loud extractor is not loud any more. Try to turn it back on and conclude that the ventilation system is broken. 9. Have to wait on Monday to report all of this because there is no one at the reception and the security team is not even in the building. TL;DR DO NOT LIVE HERE> I AM SERIOUS.

Do NOT live here (part 2/3) Come back for my laundry. It smells like sour garbage. Wash the laundry again on a more expensive cycle. Expect to get charged £3.30 for that cycle like it says on the sheet I was given when I moved in. Get charged £3.50. (Drying costs £1.70) (In Astor House where I have stayed previously, same cycle costs around £1.70 and what is even worse it is maintained by the same company, Circuit Laundry. This means that they just decided to up the prices for Central Point). 4. Second week. Overhear another conversation at the reception to do with another lost parcel. 5. Second week was sunny. Rooms have poor ventilation and windows open very little. Room becomes boiling. 6. Cardboard walls. Hear people having a party four rooms away. 7. Wake up. No internet connection. WiFi hot spot connection is OK. Decide to investigate. Find 187 devices connected to the same access point. No wonder there is no internet connection with such infrastructure. See you in part 3

Do NOT live here (part 1/3) 1. Moved in. Tried to use sink for the first time. Blocked drain in the bathroom. Maintenance Comes to fix it. Back pressure in the drain causes a spray of filth in the whole bathroom. Thankfully the bathroom door was closed or the room would also be covered in same filth. Spent the night in a different room. They sent a cleaner to “sanitise” the place. 2. Second day. Walking through the reception. Overhear a conversation between staff and resident that a package has been signed for by staff and then lost. 3. First weekend. Go to do laundry. Walk in. One of three machines broken (I estimate there are around 400 rooms in the building so you can see how that is a problem). Manage to get a time slot and get their laundry app to work. Bad experience continues in part 2/3...

I have no idea why you would want to stay here other than the location. They keep your deposit months after you have left. You have to be very lucky to make friends in there as its so quiet. Staff are nice, but customer services are woeful when needed.

The staff themselves and the building is great, I've been living there with my girlfriend and they've always been friendly and when things needed fixing they were quick, usually took a day or 2 before they came depending on how urgent it was. Girlfriend also snapped her swipe card and they called someone over to get us into our studio and get her a new key within 30 minutes and didn't charge us, which is also great. Though it's through no fault of the staff themselves, taking parcels is an issue. There's only ever one person on reception and if they have to show someone around, are on lunch, or have to do anyything, they can't accept parcels so you'll have to order far in advance and not rely on it coming on the day it's supposed to. Along with this, they don't have anyone on reception on the weekends or after 5pm unless maintenance come in for some reason (Unlikely they'll be at the front desk) so you need to work around that. Also, the internet goes down a lot (Studentcom suck)

Even though living here is so expensive, they are definitely the most modernised and well decorated halls I have been in. The common room is well equipped with sofas, pool tables and TVs and the staff in the reception are very friendly and helpful. The bedrooms are very spacious with big windows and very high ceilings but it would be nice to have a bigger pin board. Having sofas in the living area/kitchen is really nice for chilling with just your flatmates and living right in the town centre has the perks of all of the shops being nearby. Would recommend these halls if you can afford it!

Social wise not the best and tenancy lengths should be reviewed to avoid paying much more than necessary. But good location in city centre.

In the middle of Plymouth, 5 minute walk from the gorgeous hoe. Rooms are spacious, the ensuites feel like a pod but at least you get one! Unite do lots of activities in the common room. Great feel, glad I stayed here :-) cheaper than most uni Accomdation!
