Alexandra Works is hands down the best value-for-money option for students. It’s not about luxury here; it’s about smart design and getting the most out of your space. The room layout is brilliant—you can actually fit in a lot without feeling cramped. The furniture is new, modern, and looks great. There’s always a member of staff on-site, and they’re super friendly and approachable. They also take really good care of the property and make sure everything’s in order. They handle our letters and parcels carefully, putting them right into the correct flat postboxes, which is super convenient. There’s a laundry room with washing machines and dryers, though it costs about £6 for a full wash and dry. The only catch is the 15-20 minute walk to the university, which can get tiring, but there are bus stops close by, or you could grab a taxi. Plus, a new restaurant just opened right in front, which is perfect for a quick meal or chilling with friends,

All the Answers You Need About Student Accommodation

What tenancy length do I need?

Some students choose to stay during the academic year, whilst others – particularly international students – require a tenancy that covers the entire year. You can also find student accommodation that is available for one or two terms, classified as a “short stay” on our search filters.

Should I stay in catered student accommodation?

This is totally up to you! Catered accommodation means you will be served meals at set times in a dining hall, and you’ll likely have access to fewer kitchen facilities than if you were to stay in self-catered accommodation.

What is a guarantor and do I need one?

A guarantor is a person who signs a contract to agree to pay your rent if you are unable to. Most university accommodation requires a guarantor, and this applies to both domestic and international students.

Will I need to pay a deposit on student accommodation?

Most likely, yes, you’ll need to pay a deposit. This will be refunded at the end of your stay as long as there is no damage to the room or property.

What bills will my rent include?

If you are staying in university-run accommodation or private halls, your rent should include any utilities such as electricity, gas, water, and internet. Students are not required to pay council tax, however you may need to fill in an exemption form so make sure you check with your local council.

What is purpose-built student accommodation?

Purpose-built student accommodation (PBSA) are residential buildings designed for students. They are often located close to campus, boast modern facilities, include all bills, and often have staff on site to assist residents.

Will my student accommodation be furnished?

Student accommodation is typically fully furnished. Your room should include at least a bed, clothes storage, desk and chair. You’ll likely need to bring things such as bedding and kitchen utensils, but we have a full list here of everything you’ll need.

I really enjoy living in Alexandra works, it is great value for money. My flatmates are lovely and I quite like the walk to uni, it only takes a few mins.

I think the average review (2.4 stars ish) is a bit harsh. Personally I have found living in Alexandra Works to be great. It's so cheap (relatively), get a decent room and en-suite, it's surprisingly quiet and the staff are lovely. Yeah, it's not perfect but what student accommodation is? The walk is slightly on the longer side at about 15 mins to uni but if that's genuinely too much for you (assuming you're physically able) are you really cut out for a degree program?! Got the best gym in town next door too.

Don’t. Stay. Here. Lovely little 20min walk uphill to uni, amazing showers that only get your chest and that’s it, no room to turn around, but hey, least you can’t ‘drop the soap’. Rooms are usually around 400°/500°C, but if you get hot you can open your window a whole 2inches!!!! But wait, there’s more... Once you open your extravagant windows, you’re met with a delightful surprise, you find out that you’re neighbors with Thomas the Tank engine! And trust me, he knows how to get your attention and can keep you up all night talking. Flatmates are awkward and quiet. Which I guess I can’t blame Alexandra Works on... but I’m going to anyways! Oh and the WiFi is really consistent... about being inconsistent... like right now, I’m writing this review on my 4G due to the Internet being down, surprising I know. Just try and live at any of the other student accommodations, or outside Switch... both hold equal experiences... I guess

Modern, clean and good incentives to stay there such as a free bus pass and amazon voucher for my booking. However, this is not for a fresher wanting to socialise and make friends. I was unlucky with really quiet flat mates who never show themselves and this makes it difficult in communicating to take out the bins etc. The distance isn’t a problem to the uni with the free bus pass as the buses are regular. Overall, it is worth it for the money, being almost half the price of closer accommodation that isn’t as modern.

Very helpful staff all year round ; Low social spaces compared to some other accommodation - Would stay here again if it wasn’t so far from the uni - (20min walk ) Internet can be a bit crap if not using a cable but that’s to be expected

Its good compared to other Unite properties i have saw in plymouth. It is quite far from uni about 20 mins but that means it quite the flat is cleaned twice a week by staff. Staff are nice, washing machines could be better and the wifi. Kitchen is the only social space but that depends if you get on with you're flatmates. You only get a single bed but you do get a wardrobe desk, shelves and draws. Rooms are fairly big and you get an en suite which for me was a must and security around the building is good I did like living here.

Absolute crap, arrived and the carpet was soiled, window doesn't open far enough and the fire alarm kept going off. The internet works (most of the time) if you want faster internet you pay a massive premium.

It might be the cheapest en suite available (£125 when I stayed, now dropped to £115) it is by far the worst. The location itself is atrocious, 20 minute walk up a steep hill just to get to uni. The rooms themselves are reasonable but are ridiculously hot and if you want to open your window to cool down, get ready to be woken up constantly by the train tracks which are RIGHT OUTSIDE (notice how this isn't mentioned.) The reception staff are friendly and the RA's were okay. During my stay, our kitchen was infested with ladybugs and when we reported this to reception, they asked that "all flatmates come down to report it" and they did not sort the issue for weeks, as well as this another flat was infested with ants towards the end of April. My flatmate also had a broken Ethernet port which, after 6 reports and 3 months was eventually fixed. 100% not worth the money, if you can try and get literally any other accommodation (apart from Gilwell, never Gilwell.)

+ Decent sized rooms Large desk Plenty of storage space Decent en suite - The place is starting to fall apart too far away from campus/city centre (20 min uphill) Never anyone in reception to sign for parcels WiFi continuously drops out It's not a complete disaster if you end up in Ali Works but I strongly advise you go somewhere else.

Overpriced for what you get, bad location (way too far from the campus), the RAs are useless and it's even worse if you have to live with one, no social spaces, the laundry is done with broken app which steals your money, and internet is very slow and usually down.

Really far from uni, the internet is awful, there's no common room. You are close to coop, Tesco and Aldi, have a reasonable spaced ensuite with plenty of hot water & it's really quiet compared to on campus accommodation. If I had the choice again tho I wouldn't pick this accommodation.

The only thing good about Alexandra works are the flat mates you have in your halls and the people you meet. Other than that it's a horrible building with rubbish facilities and no social space. It also smells constantly and for the money we spend here it's not worth it

definitely not worth 120 quid a week. feels like im a million miles away from the uni, so much for popping back in my lunch break. caravan shower so dont plan on washing from the waist down and heating that doesnt work. the plumbing flushes itself out every hour and the train goes past about the same time so dont plan on getting much sleep either. would have been better commuting from home

Too far from campus in first year, this makes you feel disconnected. However alot of new hall have since sprung up closer to uni, so try to avoid if you can.

Overpriced at £118 a week. Didn't give me my full deposit back when I know I didn't cause any damage as I was on placement most of the year! No one is ever at the reception when you need them even though the sign states they should be open during that time. 20 minute walk half uphill to uni so not good if you're someone who always leaves late like me! Building was ridiculously hot when we all first moved in, especially the higher in the building you are were. Predrinks - you were sweaty before you even left! Lift was broken around the time everyone was moving out, took weeks to fix, the whole building was charged for it even though there was CCTV in the lift. WIFI dodgy. The rooms and kitchen/living area were decent but that's about it!

Although it's the cheapest halls with en suite I wouldn't say that they're worth it. They're not a "10 minute walk" from campus as the company quote, but rather 15-20 minutes. Socially I've found these halls very difficult - made worse by the fact that they're so far from anyone else - but that may just be down to me being unlucky with my flat mates. If you google these halls a photo of a dead rat comes up in someone's flat, and parts of the kitchen are falling apart. They also didn't give us any kind of sheets on moving in the record any damages that existed before we moved in - I have heard that Unite really like to keep people's deposits so maybe this is a sly move to enable them to do so. Basically you'd be better off spending less money and sharing a bathroom than living here, or biting the bullet and going for somewhere more expensive. Compared to St Thomas Court Halls which are also owned by Unite these are much worse. Don't make the mistake I did.
