All the Answers You Need About Student Accommodation
What tenancy length do I need?
Some students choose to stay during the academic year, whilst others – particularly international students – require a tenancy that covers the entire year. You can also find student accommodation that is available for one or two terms, classified as a “short stay” on our search filters.
Should I stay in catered student accommodation?
This is totally up to you! Catered accommodation means you will be served meals at set times in a dining hall, and you’ll likely have access to fewer kitchen facilities than if you were to stay in self-catered accommodation.
What is a guarantor and do I need one?
A guarantor is a person who signs a contract to agree to pay your rent if you are unable to. Most university accommodation requires a guarantor, and this applies to both domestic and international students.
Will I need to pay a deposit on student accommodation?
Most likely, yes, you’ll need to pay a deposit. This will be refunded at the end of your stay as long as there is no damage to the room or property.
What bills will my rent include?
If you are staying in university-run accommodation or private halls, your rent should include any utilities such as electricity, gas, water, and internet. Students are not required to pay council tax, however you may need to fill in an exemption form so make sure you check with your local council.
What is purpose-built student accommodation?
Purpose-built student accommodation (PBSA) are residential buildings designed for students. They are often located close to campus, boast modern facilities, include all bills, and often have staff on site to assist residents.
Will my student accommodation be furnished?
Student accommodation is typically fully furnished. Your room should include at least a bed, clothes storage, desk and chair. You’ll likely need to bring things such as bedding and kitchen utensils, but we have a full list here of everything you’ll need.

I have never felt more loved and welcomed as I have since moving here they helped me settle in and they helped with luggage, If there's anywhere I would recommend it would be here ❤️
This is so lovely to hear, thank you!

We 100% recommend The Lantern too, thank you for your amazing review!
Staff are always welcoming and ready to help whenever needed, rooms and common areas are very spacious and other facilities are always well kept.
Thank you for your time to leave such a positive review!
I absolutely love the staff here, they have always been so helpful and friendly. At times we have had some issues but the staff have always taken our issues and fixed them. The only complaint I have is on the very odd occasion the WiFi can get quite bad, but the accommodation is doing what they can all the time to improve it. The location is amazing I can get my food shop done at the Lidl around the corner. And all the things I could possibly need are less than 10 minute walk away, and the train station is right across the road. Couldn't ask for a better place to live.
Thank you for your review, its so lovely to hear your love living at the Lantern, :)
Staff: -My experience with the staff has been great. They're always communicative and friendly. Ive been in the lantern for a year, and have not experienced anything negative on that end. Location: the location is quite good if you enjoy activities in the city centre. Plus, you can head down to Lime Street station with a minute or two :P The flat I'm in is well maintained. The kitchen is spacious with many drawers and two fridges. The room is good .
So lovely to hear, thank you!
Amazing place to live, the rooms are modern and a fair size, it’s very central so close to lots of sights in Liverpool and the staff are so welcoming, Hannah and Francis are really approachable and the whole team are always on hand to help. Would very much recommend living here as it really adds to your university experience.
This is so lovely to hear :) thank you!
The Lantern is a great, sociable accommodation, it has allowed me to feel comfortable as there are many social spaces on site along with great facilities. The location being a less than 5 minute walk from the town centre allows for easy travel to shops, for food and nights out. Also as The Lantern is a 1 minute walk from my bus stop so I am able to get on campus at Liverpool Hope I can easily get to uni and back stress free. The staff involved with the accommodation could not be more friendly and makes living here so much easier. Going into my third year and the three years I’ve lived in the Lantern, super safe. Would highly recommend.
WE would highly reccommend too! Thank you for your lovely review.
The location is good but the price you pay is so high it’s gone up massive amounts over the 3 years I’ve stayed here and the lift issue is ongoing for the past year, constantly broken, the on site staff are helpful on the whole but this is an issue with the actual Fresh company who clearly don’t care about fixing the lift issue as reviews are left from 4 years ago with the exact same issues of the lift being out of service for months at a time which is a huge inconvenience when on a high floor I would not rebook here next year if I had another year due to the experience I’ve had in my final year
Thank you for taking the time to leave a review. We would like to apologise for the inconvenience caused by the recent lift outages. We would like to reassure you that the causes of the outages were out of our control, and that we have done everything in our power to ensure that the lifts were returned to service as soon as possible. The small team at The Lantern have tried to assist where they can during this difficult time with tasks such as helping with luggage and large parcels. I can confirm that the lifts are now fully operational. Please do reach out to The Lantern Residents Team directly if we can help further.
The worst management I have ever seen. The lifts have been broken from November until February just for them to "fix" them and have 3 people get stuck in them and then close them again. No compensation, no help with trash, no responses to complains, nothing

The lantern team are excellent! They’re super friendly and always happy to help you with anything. The locations of the accommodation is definitely the best feature and I would definitely recommend it to anyone looking to live in the city centre.
Such a lovely review! It's great to hear that you're enjoying your stay at The Lantern. We might be biased, but we agree that our location can't be beaten!
Great value for money, brilliant destination in the city centre, clean when you move in, maintenance issues resolved very quickly, staff polite and helpful only issue is that things do break quite often although they’re fixed even quicker.
We like to think we have the best (and fastest) Maintenance Technician in the whole of Liverpool! Thank you for your lovely review, we're thrilled that you're enjoying your stay at The Lantern.
After having a few older friends staying in the lantern, I chose to give it a visit myself before leaving for university and I was super happy with the accommodation, everything is excellent about it. I cannot recommend it as much as I already do!
What a lovely review, thank you so much! We're so happy that you're enjoying your stay at The Lantern!
I’m a second year student and moved here for its great location, lovely staff and modern rooms. Good value for money and plenty on offer for social experience.
Thank you for your very kind words! We're thrilled that you're enjoying our social events here at The Lantern - plenty more to come in the New Year!
Nice accommodation and staff are very friendly
That's lovely to hear, thank you so much!
I like it. I enjoy the time I spent with my roommates.
Thank you, it's great to hear that you're enjoying your experience at The Lantern!
Been loving my time here at the Lantern so much I don't want my tenancy to end! Want to give a mention to the staff because they are so friendly and helpful especially Eleanor who's always helped me with everything I've needed, nothing is ever too much for her! Will really miss it when I move out
Thank you for your kind words, we're thrilled that you're enjoying your stay here at The Lantern!
What first attracted me to the Lantern was the fantastic location, being situated right next to Lime Street, the city centre and a 10 minute walk from the universities is a massive advantage as a student. Though, since moving in it has constantly impressed me. The team here are extremely helpful and social, you often forget they manage the buildings and they're not just your friends. They regularly host great events for residents and consistently communicate to us whether it be for planned maintenance, wellbeing initiatives etc. The rooms, kitchens and facilities are all very modern and spacious and the 'backstage area' and the gym that is included put to proof your value for money,
What a lovely review! We're thrilled that you're enjoying your stay at The Lantern!
Great accommodation located in a prime location right next to the city centre. Staff are friendly and always ready to help. Facilities may go out of order occasionally but are usually fixed right away.
Hi there, Thank you so much for taking the time to give us your feedback. It means so much. The Lantern Residents Team
The Lantern is a great, sociable accommodation, it has allowed me to feel comfortable as there are many social spaces on site along with great facilities. Also as The Lantern is a 1 minute walk from my bus stop so I am able to get on campus at Liverpool Hope I can easily get to uni and back stress free. The staff here as well are exceptional they have helped me when I have been feeling home sick and have even helped me with uni who as some of the staff also go to uni. They have been so good that I have even decided to stay next year.
Thank you very much for your review, the team here really appreciates it and we’re glad you enjoyed your time with us~ Regards, Fresh
Management is terrible, did not want to help me. It made my Mental health worse living here.
Really friendly staff and fab location , would be nice if the social space was actually inside the accommodation building rather than an external building though but apart from that it’s fab and there’s always something going on/ being organised by the staff !
Thank you very much for your review, the team here really appreciates it and we’ll take your comments on board in the future and we’re glad you enjoyed your time with us~ Regards, Fresh
I recommend this accomodation so so much! The location couldn’t be better and the rooms are much more spacious than all the other accommodations I’ve seen. The amount of storage in the bedrooms is amazing and the wardrobes are huge. The staff are really friendly and I have always felt very safe and comfortable living here. Depending on the part of the building you stay in it has some incredible views. I stayed in block A and the kitchen was really spacious and had a view an amazing view overlooking lime street station. The value for money could have been better but only because of the pandemic, as many things were limited but I understand some of these issues were out of the managements hands.
The lantern is definitely one of the nicest accommodations I’ve been to in Liverpool. It’s so central and the rooms/kitchens are modern and stylish, with loads of storage and a good sized wardrobe. The kitchen is so spacious with plenty of room for the whole flat to be in it at once. It is a bit pricey but if you have high standards it’s definitely worth the money. The management is so friendly and helpful if we ever have issues. I did stay in this accomodation during lockdown so a lot of the perks weren’t as easily accessible, however I know that is not the managements fault. Overall great experience!
Lovely accommodation with an amazing staff. I’m absolutely in love with my apartment and would definitely recommend this place.
Although it is in a good locationz that's about the o ly thing that's good about the lantern. Especially during these hard times with covis-19 their response has been awful. Almost every student accommodation in the city has released students from their tenancy agreements, whilst fresh student living is still forcing struggling students and their families to pay 2k! Shameful response considering we're not even allowed into the building if you aren't already on lockdown in your flat.
Perfect location in the city centre!! Super close to Uni of Liverpool and also LJMU. The in-house staff could be more efficient when responding and dealing with queries (e.g. moved into my flat in September to find the extractor fan was broken and it still is now as they are "awaiting a part" but have had no update of this, I had to chase this up!!) Rooms and communal spaces are pretty spacious and if you/your flatmates are good at keeping areas clean there should be no issues. The social spaces built this year are nice and modern but lacking that nice homely feel especially on the higher floors where the study spaces are (feels very cold in there). Other than that it's a good accommodation.
Poor reviews don't reflect the reality of how good this accommodation is. Good size rooms, lovely well designed shower room. Lots of storage. Great views. Spacious shared lounge & kitchen. Iron & hoover supplied. Of course it doesn't have utensils - it's student accommodation. It's not a hotel & you have to grow up & look after your flat
If you're looking for a place where homeless herion addicts come into the building and steal clothes out of the dryers then this place is for you. Ideal for students who love to hear their flat fire alarm go off from 8pm - 4am.
