All the Answers You Need About Student Accommodation
What tenancy length do I need?
Some students choose to stay during the academic year, whilst others – particularly international students – require a tenancy that covers the entire year. You can also find student accommodation that is available for one or two terms, classified as a “short stay” on our search filters.
Should I stay in catered student accommodation?
This is totally up to you! Catered accommodation means you will be served meals at set times in a dining hall, and you’ll likely have access to fewer kitchen facilities than if you were to stay in self-catered accommodation.
What is a guarantor and do I need one?
A guarantor is a person who signs a contract to agree to pay your rent if you are unable to. Most university accommodation requires a guarantor, and this applies to both domestic and international students.
Will I need to pay a deposit on student accommodation?
Most likely, yes, you’ll need to pay a deposit. This will be refunded at the end of your stay as long as there is no damage to the room or property.
What bills will my rent include?
If you are staying in university-run accommodation or private halls, your rent should include any utilities such as electricity, gas, water, and internet. Students are not required to pay council tax, however you may need to fill in an exemption form so make sure you check with your local council.
What is purpose-built student accommodation?
Purpose-built student accommodation (PBSA) are residential buildings designed for students. They are often located close to campus, boast modern facilities, include all bills, and often have staff on site to assist residents.
Will my student accommodation be furnished?
Student accommodation is typically fully furnished. Your room should include at least a bed, clothes storage, desk and chair. You’ll likely need to bring things such as bedding and kitchen utensils, but we have a full list here of everything you’ll need.

Would highly recommend!!! Very comfortable accommodation with great amenities!!
Very clean, very nice employees. So many activities and free things they give out. Very social environment. Feels like a home away from home! WiFi not always great, and slow maintenance.
Accomodation is nice, some issues have taken a bit longer than expected to be resolved. The flat wasn't as clean as I would've expected when I moved in, however this was right after transfer of management from Host to Home for Students.
The Printworks is a great location, close to town and university. The staff are very friendly and offer lots of treats and activities to get involved with :)
Great location and lovely staff
In a great location, good value for money and the team (Alison and Tom especially) are always organising fun and interactive events. I have felt so safe and welcome since moving in and would definitely recommend to others!
Have the Great receptionist team bringing in great events, however the maintenance team has been awful, been waiting since the beginning of the year for a leaking fridge to be fixed and a light that could epilepsy issues to be replaced, nonetheless good location, great receptionists once again but worthless maintenance.
Everything has been great - maybe maintenance could be a little faster, however this is mainly due to management rather than the staff - staff at reception are always so friendly and helpful. The social events are really lovely, there’s always stuff on and the staff spend a lot of time organising them e.g. therapy llamas.
Everything is basically perfect except management and maintenance. They take ages to respond to complaints eg. fridge leakage and don’t fix it properly so have to come back for more. The reception staff are lovely and all of the giveaways and events that go on eg. llamas and the guacamole kits/dots for spots and advent calendars are so lovely i love it!
Don't come here. Staff have an attitude with you and unhelpful. not to mention they're going to fine you for as much things are they can in an unfair manner. not to mention how close it is to unit 1. find yourself a house owned by an independent landlord/landlady and avoid corporate student housing because they'll take all your money.
Theres always a funny smell around the stairs area, extremely noisy at night, and the management is really bad. Extremely disappointed by their way of communication especially in times of COVID.
Flat not ready when we arrived, car full and long journey, had to go off for two hours while they cleaned flat. Stayed three months. WiFi hopeless, Left flat spotless, yet they have charged me £75 for flat cleaning without discussing! I have photos to prove how clean it was left, yet they are not responding to any emails? Poor management, taking advantage, I would not recommend.
No professional cleaning, they don't provide proper cleaning materials, yet they expect you to pass constant inspections. I passed everything single one and then at the end of the year they billed me for an entirely new mattress on the grounds of a "stain" even though it was an old and uncomfortable and clearly not new when it was given to me. They asked for access throughout the year for minor checks/maintenance jobs, many of which I feel could have been done during holidays. The facilities are fine, the gym is not really a gym, just a treadmill and a stationary bike in a room. HDMI cables available from reception would really help the cinema facilities. Staff are generally okay, though some more helpful than others and sometimes claimed they didn't have post which had been delivered. Laundry will set you back about £5 a go, and if you are in one of the further blocks expect a short walk. Expect noise from Unit 1 (nightclub), especially if your room is courtyard.
Had a great time living here as a second years the staff were friendly and helpful and very responsive if I had a problem with my room. Fab social spaces and a great location, close to town and not too far from Uni. For me this has to be the best hall in Exeter
I lived at The Printworks for 3 years and it genuinely makes me sad to read some of these reviews. Some people just can't be pleased and so they leave bad reviews. This is genuinely the best place to live in Exeter and its so obvious because its really popular. The staff are so friendly and helpful and if there is a maintenance problem or issue with security and noise then they sort it out for you. Its as simple as asking and its done. I was really reassured by them being there and its the reason I chose to live there and not go into a house with some of my friends. It makes it easier for me to do what I came to do, study and enjoy my time at Uni. If I could stay another year I would have without questions. I'll miss you Printworks
Rooms are very nice, can sometimes hear the nightclub Unit 1 but it has rarely ever bothered me. 10 minute bike ride/20 minute walk from UoE, in the center of town with lots of shop nearby. Overall a great experience.
I've just finished my second year at The Printworks. I'm also staying my third year here simply as its easy for my lovely flatmates and myself (whom I met at Printworks). The room (courtyard en-suite) is small but cosy and the bathroom is a good size. The kitchen is well equipped and was spotless when we moved in. Negatives: noise, I live in block D which is far away from Arena (nightclub) and nightly have to wear earplugs as there is a huge amount of vibrations which disturb sleep. Drunk people in the courtyard also wake me up with their drunk shouting and night security tend to just ignore them. Wi-Fi is awfully slow despite complaint to reception they told me its not their problem. The management of the hall is awful, she is rude and disrespectful of her customers. I complained about my cold drinking water being hot and she didn't even ask my flat number to send maintenance, pretty sure that cold water being hot is illegal.
Anyone would be lucky to live here. Of my three years at University, I have been happiest living at the Printworks! It's so lovely coming home and being welcomed by the management/security who are supportive and always helpful. I know that my parents are reassured that I'm constantly safe because there is 24 hour security presence, as well as the safe location! As far as the accommodation itself goes, it's great - modern, spacious and perfect for student living. There is plenty of space to socialise (and procrastinate..) as well as a gym and a TV Room. The location is fab - 15 minutes to campus and 2 minutes from Exeter's City Centre. Thank you Printworks for the being the best accommodation ever!
I lived in Exeter for 4 years as a student and Printworks was by far the nicest, most well-equipped and best value place I rented. I moved in as a final year undergrad knowing no-one but it had a great community and I met some wonderful people. I only wish it had been built when I started uni! Great facilities, location and lovely staff.
I lived here as a postgraduate student. I had a very good experience. All of the team were very helpful and always made me feel welcome. They even helped carry all of my stuff into my room. Printworks offers a good environment for studying with sound proof rooms and the study room is very helpful when you don't want to walk to the library. . The Gym downstairs was also very handy. I would definitely recommend it. The Printworks is no doubt one of the best accommodations in Exeter
Great place to live! Excellent city centre location perfect for everything and only a short walk to campus. Great common room to socialise with friends and study facilities are also available which certainly helps during exam period when the libraries on campus are full. Staff are always on hand to help you out whenever you need them!
Lived in Printworks as a third year student. The accommodation was designed to give you opportunities to socialize, to study in a quiet study space, there was a gym that had the essentials, quick an efficient maintenance and a really good management and security system. There's a great courtyard in the middle of the accommodation to relax and hang about. Good bike storage area which is safe and inside the accommodation complex. Management communicated everything with us, clearly and diligently. They were on top of dealing with problems as issues were dealt with on the same day or within an acceptable period. They made an effort to engage with us and provide us with some social opportunities. Security was outstanding, carrying out regular patrols and maintaining a helpful and friendly demeanor The rooms themselves were handed over spotless at the start of the tenancy and on the off chance, something was not right with the room, it was set right straight away.
All in all i had no problems staying here, it was far better than campus accommodation thats for certain. Has a very luxurious feel to it which is never a bad thing. Two bike storages so it was great for my bike. Lovely staff and overall a fun place to live. I would reccomend.
A fantastic place to live! I would thoroughly recommend The Printworks as an accommodation choice for students in Exeter. I have found it to be a really great place to live as it is very clean, well maintained and has a warm and welcoming atmosphere. My room and shared kitchen themselves are very modern, spacious and equipped with good-quality fixtures and fittings. The location of The Printworks is ideally situated within a ten minute walk of the University of Exeter and less than a minute's walk to Sidwell Street and all the necessary amenities, from Tesco to Dominos. The fact that there is an on-site gym, high-speed broadband and a TV room simply add to all the positive aspects of living at the Printworks. Furthermore, I have always found the management staff to be friendly and attentive to my needs. Definitely a 5 star ***** accommodation.
Social life is great as you meet tons of people from different backgrounds and nationalitys with the court yard and pool table area being great places to just chill. You can pre-drink for quite a while on a night out as arena is just 5 mins away. Study spaces are great although i generally prefer to study at University. All in all was a good year from home
The rooms are poorly designed and impractical. There is barely any closer space. The constant vibration coming from arena causes stress and is horrible for studying. The lighting and desk design for the room is also horrible for studying. The rooms are poorly maintained and provides in partly broken condition. I regret coming to this accommodation especially getting a studio.
With all respect, to start with I got a studio in this accommodation , the interior design of the room is not directed to be suitable for students, by other means, desks are not in a good position or condition, some of the desks have the TV placed right above them which causes some disturbance. Lighting is horrible as well, especially for studying. There are constant vibrations (noise, to be more accurate; bass vibrations 'causes stress') coming from Unit 1 (nightclub). The general design of the room is impractical, the closets space is extremely limited. The closet is way too small that I had to put the rest of my clothes in the office drawers. Even though storage boxes are provided, it is impractical and unpleasant to use them for your clothes. The couch is uncomfortable, plus the bed is not an actual double bed size, also they could've managed to have beds with under bed storage. It would theoretically be very uncomfortable for any couple to be living here as mentioned on the web
Fantastic place to live - enjoyed my second year at the Printeorks and would recommend it to anyone looking for accommodation for their time in Exeter.
Lived in Printworks for a year while doing my masters from September 2014 to September 2015, and in that time the experience was quite pleasant. The location is great as you're both close to town and university. If you're feeling lazy as well its awesome because the bus and coach station is 2 mins away with buses to campus at regular 15 minute intervals. It is also super convenient for travelling by coach as you don't have to worry about calling up a taxi or struggle with luggage for long distances as the coach station is so close. The reception staff are super friendly and always have a smile on and generally no one gets in your way.
Seems some people have had bad experience reading these reviews but I had the best year here, By far one of the best accommodations in the city and really popular. Its a friendly environment, great location and really good quality accommodation. I have had no issues with heating, noise or the management and none of my friends have either. Highly recommend The Printworks for accommodation.
Costly but a great place for luxurious student living. A long walk to campus but close to town.
The 7 grand a year was not worth for the experience! Rooms have very basic furnishing, heating is very limited ( even after several complaints during cold winter days). Reception staff is great and very responsive, management however is poor and not as professional as expected ( I was advised to do exercise during my study so I don't get too cold because the company is trying to keep their CO2 emissions as low as possible). The end of contract charges are inexplicably high: 100 pounds for just repainting the walls. For all these charges, they expect you to write your full card details on paper that's stored in the office. Slightly unsure this is even legal. It isn't the most social of halls, not that inclusive, although reception employees put lots of out-of-contract work into making it a fun experience. Reception looks good, the place itself is very safe, however I cannot get past the rude management comments and replies I received during my stay there. Overall, not worth my money :)
