Some students choose to stay during the academic year, whilst others – particularly international students – require a tenancy that covers the entire year. You can also find student accommodation that is available for one or two terms, classified as a “short stay” on our search filters.
This is totally up to you! Catered accommodation means you will be served meals at set times in a dining hall, and you’ll likely have access to fewer kitchen facilities than if you were to stay in self-catered accommodation.
A guarantor is a person who signs a contract to agree to pay your rent if you are unable to. Most university accommodation requires a guarantor, and this applies to both domestic and international students.
Most likely, yes, you’ll need to pay a deposit. This will be refunded at the end of your stay as long as there is no damage to the room or property.
If you are staying in university-run accommodation or private halls, your rent should include any utilities such as electricity, gas, water, and internet. Students are not required to pay council tax, however you may need to fill in an exemption form so make sure you check with your local council.
Purpose-built student accommodation (PBSA) are residential buildings designed for students. They are often located close to campus, boast modern facilities, include all bills, and often have staff on site to assist residents.
Student accommodation is typically fully furnished. Your room should include at least a bed, clothes storage, desk and chair. You’ll likely need to bring things such as bedding and kitchen utensils, but we have a full list here of everything you’ll need.
Community of like-minded people who want to work together to improve the places we live. Don't know anywhere else where you know your neighbours and neighbours neighbours and they invite you over for dinner! Genuinely some of the kindest, most thoughtful people I know, incredibly lucky to call this place my home.

i love the co-op, a great place to live !
Incredible student housing due to fully democratic structure. Being able to make this place our own is really special and the connections you make here are lifelong and special. With an amazing location and spectacular culture, especially with all the events going on in the 34 basement now, ESHC is such a wonderful place to live.
Amazing and affordable student housing with a focus on community and cooperation
Class place, class people. super friendly and well run
Everyone here is so kind and the location is amazing!
A beautiful, diverse place to live. The most inclusive, kindest community of people I've ever met.
I moved into the co-op last year and have found a home here! The sense of community is really special, and something I was grateful to find as a lonely student during the covid pandemic. It has been lovely getting to know and working with different people to keep the co-op going, providing affordable accomodation as private renting gets impossibly expensive, and using our space to host events.
My experience at the edinburgh student housing cooperative has been lovely, everyone here is supportive and friendly. I have loved engaging with the building and my neighbours greatly
Amazing place to live, I made life long friends and love having more control over where I live.
A lovely place with lots of lovely wonderful people who make it a place where you feel safe relaxed and at home. many events and ideas to while away a winter evening. beautiful views and sunsets across the meadows with arthurs seat in silouette! a fab basement for many events which you can help organise if you like!
ESHC is an incredible space and home - it’s the happiest place I’ve ever lived and I wish I could stay here forever !
This is an amazing place to live and a great project!
Really lovely atmosphere and incredible people. Great flat environment and good points of contact for what to do when something goes wrong. Support is in place for a variety of things. Overall really lovely place to live filled with incredible people
I've lived here for a year and a half and honestly it's been life changing. I met so many amazing people and learnt lots of new skills. No stinking landlord too!
Living at the coop is great for students as it gives a home and a community as well as a great city centre location whilst pursuing your studies.
The Edinburgh student housing cooperative is undeniably the best student accomodation in the city. Sitting currenlty at just over £90 a week it is the best value for money and includes energy and basic household supplies as well as reimbursing for flat renovations etc. It is in a fantastic location on Bruntsfield Links. The students who live here run the building and therefore manage the property. We maintain clean spaces. We renovated the basement garage into a social space which is cosy and comfy and is perfect location for meetings, get together, and parties. It has an amazing sense of community and offers the best social experience. Our internet and Wi-Fi is also very strong.
