Sugarhouse Close Biography
The University of Edinburgh is a fifteen-minute walk from Sugarhouse Close. Located in the heart of the city centre, you will be surrounded by shops, restaurants, and historical landmarks such as Holyrood Abbey and the Scottish Parliament Building. All of your grocery shopping needs are taken care of as there is a Tesco Express next door.
The common room has glass ceilings and walls and is a great place to relax and watch TV or play a game of pool and ping pong. The outdoor social space is ideal for soaking up the summer sun and enjoying the view of Arthur’s Seat. When needing to focus on your studies, you can make use of the communal study room.
You have 300 rooms to choose from, with some offering views of Salisbury Crags and Holyrood Park. If you are looking for independent living you can choose to stay in one of the modern studios. If you want to stay with friends or have that community experience, you can choose to stay in an en-suite room with a shared kitchen and lounge space.

What tenancy length do I need?
Some students choose to stay during the academic year, whilst others – particularly international students – require a tenancy that covers the entire year. You can also find student accommodation that is available for one or two terms, classified as a “short stay” on our search filters.
Should I stay in catered student accommodation?
This is totally up to you! Catered accommodation means you will be served meals at set times in a dining hall, and you’ll likely have access to fewer kitchen facilities than if you were to stay in self-catered accommodation.
What is a guarantor and do I need one?
A guarantor is a person who signs a contract to agree to pay your rent if you are unable to. Most university accommodation requires a guarantor, and this applies to both domestic and international students.
Will I need to pay a deposit on student accommodation?
Most likely, yes, you’ll need to pay a deposit. This will be refunded at the end of your stay as long as there is no damage to the room or property.
What bills will my rent include?
If you are staying in university-run accommodation or private halls, your rent should include any utilities such as electricity, gas, water, and internet. Students are not required to pay council tax, however you may need to fill in an exemption form so make sure you check with your local council.
What is purpose-built student accommodation?
Purpose-built student accommodation (PBSA) are residential buildings designed for students. They are often located close to campus, boast modern facilities, include all bills, and often have staff on site to assist residents.
Will my student accommodation be furnished?
Student accommodation is typically fully furnished. Your room should include at least a bed, clothes storage, desk and chair. You’ll likely need to bring things such as bedding and kitchen utensils, but we have a full list here of everything you’ll need.

Very lovely accommodation and the staff very nice and friendly helpful people such as Paige, Sofi, Donald, Louise and the rest of the workers. The place generally very calm, save and clean. Compared with most of the accommodations in the city, the prices reasonable.

The elevator have long time cannot use, others are perfect. Sophie is the best staff here! She help me a lot! I always forget my key card, everytime she help me and she is so kind, u should pay her more.

Sugarhouse Close is a slightly pricier option compared to other student accommodations, but if you were to look closer at details that make it a more comfortable, convenient and safer accommodation than others, it is well worth it. For example, reception is open 24/7, walls are well soundproof, ventilation fans in bathroom, central location and all shared equipment provided in living area/kitchen.

Unite is a safe bet if you want a well maintained and reliable accomodation. The Staff is really helpfull and every issue on site is fixed immidiatelly after reporting. The wifi connection is great. The Rooms are rather on the small side, but the design is very student friendly.

The location is insanely good. Basically you can walk to anywhere in the city center. I only need 10 minutes to get ready everyday to go to uni campus and be in classes on time.
