All the Answers You Need About Student Accommodation
What tenancy length do I need?
Some students choose to stay during the academic year, whilst others – particularly international students – require a tenancy that covers the entire year. You can also find student accommodation that is available for one or two terms, classified as a “short stay” on our search filters.
Should I stay in catered student accommodation?
This is totally up to you! Catered accommodation means you will be served meals at set times in a dining hall, and you’ll likely have access to fewer kitchen facilities than if you were to stay in self-catered accommodation.
What is a guarantor and do I need one?
A guarantor is a person who signs a contract to agree to pay your rent if you are unable to. Most university accommodation requires a guarantor, and this applies to both domestic and international students.
Will I need to pay a deposit on student accommodation?
Most likely, yes, you’ll need to pay a deposit. This will be refunded at the end of your stay as long as there is no damage to the room or property.
What bills will my rent include?
If you are staying in university-run accommodation or private halls, your rent should include any utilities such as electricity, gas, water, and internet. Students are not required to pay council tax, however you may need to fill in an exemption form so make sure you check with your local council.
What is purpose-built student accommodation?
Purpose-built student accommodation (PBSA) are residential buildings designed for students. They are often located close to campus, boast modern facilities, include all bills, and often have staff on site to assist residents.
Will my student accommodation be furnished?
Student accommodation is typically fully furnished. Your room should include at least a bed, clothes storage, desk and chair. You’ll likely need to bring things such as bedding and kitchen utensils, but we have a full list here of everything you’ll need.

A great location, near groceries and university.
Great Space, and lovely staff that are all very helpful.
Reasonably okay however doesn’t really match the price I’m paying for it. Takes a long time for issues to be resolved as well.
Enjoy the location and the rooms are alright but would advise to avoid staying here. Fire alarm has been going off on and off for the past THREE days, phoned both the emergency team and spoke to the security team and have been told that there is a water leak which is tripping the alarms and there's nothing that can be done except continuously phone to have someone come out and turn it off. Not only is this seriously damaging to my mental health and hearing but it is safety risk with the possibility of electrical fires. Would never stay here again.
Maintenance men just walk into your room whenever, and leave a huge mess. No communications, never told about any maintenance scheduled.
Under no circumstances would I recommend choosing the hub for student accomodation. The fire alarm goes off almost every day now and it is at the point if there was a real fire there would be significant threat to life for almost everyone because the alarm goes off for hours at a time despite calls for it to be switched off, on an almost daily basis. Unless you are deaf, the hub is a terrible choice and should be avoided at all costs.
not worth the money, building falling apart.
Great place to stay and very central.
This place is terrible with communication and it’s very run down, over the course of the year I had my dishwasher, fridge, cooker, radiators and many things stop working. The non stop fire alarms was unbearable and management was terrible at solving issues, they never took any blame for the issues. Would not recommend this place at all. Go to Keiller court if looking for student accommodation.
The location is great. Even though it is expensive, the location to campus and shopping makes it worth it. Rooms are great as well, with En-suites.
Filthy when I moved in. Did not address broken and or cleanliness issues from inventory at beginning. No-one ever at office, no-one ever addresses emails. The whole building stinks. We had issue with a flat member that was stealing, taking drugs and bringing in strangers. Reception told us to call the police if not happy. Fire alarm goes off at least twice a day, usually early hours and for up tp an hour. Has been the worst experience of my life purely because of the accommodation.
Fantastic location. Friendly, helpful staff. Good sized room and kitchen , living area. Clean building. Great place to meet friends. Highly recommend . 5*
The staff is super supportive & and the location is amazing. I never felt away from home and in trouble as they were always there to help me in some way! Great stay ! Thankyou so much 🌸
accommodation was absolutely filthy on arrival; carpet stained with past residents’ vomit/food, ceiling flooded multiple times due to damp all over the walls, infestation of fruit flies and you’d think the toilet/ shower had never been cleaned. The amount of dust/ mould in the flat triggered asthma attacks and am certain gave me multiple chest infections. same goes for the water- it has that murky, cloudy appearance with unknown substances floating in it and never ever runs cold- pro tip, keep a cold bottle in the fridge. Fire alarms go off at LEAST once every 2 days, taking on average around half an hour to be turned off each time (it’s always the same flats too). Drunken students (who probs forgot their keys) will buzz yours and everyone else’s flat at 4am until someone buzzes them in. Theres been a few times I’ve had banging on my door in the middle of the night, scary to say the least. plz choose any other accommodation!!!!
Great location, right next to the university great for students. lovely big rooms and nice personal bathroom. Overall I had a very good experience at the hub and would highly recommend.
Stayed at the Hub for 3 years as it was convenient and decently priced. It is close to both the uni and town with both being about 10 minute walk depending on where your classes are and what shops you want to visit. Overall its been a nice place to live during my studies.
I lived at the Hub for 2 years and had a great experience there. The staff in the office was helpful and friendly (always happy to sign for parcels, fix anything that's broken in a timely manner), and the location was conveniently close to the university and city centre. From my experience of living at The Hub, I have no qualms in recommending it :)
I have lived at the hub for 4 years and I am about to begin my 5th year after the summer. it’s a great accommodation with amazing, kind management from Joanna and the team. the negative you will hear from people is that there’s fire alarms regularly- I would say that’s a positive negative. It’s nice to know that the alarm system is sensitive and will 100% protect the students if there is an incident. Overall the hub has a great social life and a safe environment. There’s a reason so many people stay there throughout their time at university. It provides a safe, comfortable, private home for students. I would highly recommend it as the best student accommodation in Dundee city. Every accommodation has negatives and people will always find something to complain about ! In all honesty you cant go wrong with it the hub and it’s safe supportive environment. I recommend it 100%
Been living here for 2 years now. Has been pleasant and positive experience so far.
The hub is a fantastic location for new or familiar students in dundee. It is well positioned between the university, city center and bars/restaurants. A cinema, theatre and casino are also within 5 minutes walking distance for entertainment. Bills are all inclusive (except laundry) for easy finances and maintenance is quickly provided on request. WiFi is very good for most devices and outlets are provided for Ethernet cables when stronger connections are needed. There is usually an available community for those who enjoy night life and a common room for gatherings. Highly recommended above university or local accommodations.
Fridge/ kitchen is small for 4-5 people.
