All the Answers You Need About Student Accommodation

What tenancy length do I need?

Some students choose to stay during the academic year, whilst others – particularly international students – require a tenancy that covers the entire year. You can also find student accommodation that is available for one or two terms, classified as a “short stay” on our search filters.

Should I stay in catered student accommodation?

This is totally up to you! Catered accommodation means you will be served meals at set times in a dining hall, and you’ll likely have access to fewer kitchen facilities than if you were to stay in self-catered accommodation.

What is a guarantor and do I need one?

A guarantor is a person who signs a contract to agree to pay your rent if you are unable to. Most university accommodation requires a guarantor, and this applies to both domestic and international students.

Will I need to pay a deposit on student accommodation?

Most likely, yes, you’ll need to pay a deposit. This will be refunded at the end of your stay as long as there is no damage to the room or property.

What bills will my rent include?

If you are staying in university-run accommodation or private halls, your rent should include any utilities such as electricity, gas, water, and internet. Students are not required to pay council tax, however you may need to fill in an exemption form so make sure you check with your local council.

What is purpose-built student accommodation?

Purpose-built student accommodation (PBSA) are residential buildings designed for students. They are often located close to campus, boast modern facilities, include all bills, and often have staff on site to assist residents.

Will my student accommodation be furnished?

Student accommodation is typically fully furnished. Your room should include at least a bed, clothes storage, desk and chair. You’ll likely need to bring things such as bedding and kitchen utensils, but we have a full list here of everything you’ll need.

The quality of the room and communal facilities is really worth the money. However, given how much you pay, there have been several cleanliness issues. The rooms clearly only had a quick wipe down and hoovered. Multiple flatmates have had to buy drain unblocked for the shower due to them being full with existing tennant hair etc… The inner bag for the Henry provided was completely full on moving in. Again, we’ve had to purchase liner bags. One of the drip trays at the bag of one of the fridges was completely inundated in residue and mould. Again, we’ve had to pull out the fridges and clean behind it. I Overall, my experience so far at Chamberlain has been great, but there are a few things which you would expect for the cost that haven’t come into fruition.

Overall it was decent, but in my opinion it isnt worth how expensive it is. In addition, it is the furthest walk from campus. However it is a nice building and I have have many fun and social experiences there.

Probably the best accommodation at UoB. Very sociable accommodation which may get noisy sometimes (weekends + sports night), but bedrooms are soundproofed pretty well. The rooms and en-suites are very modern and have everything you need. - the rooms are slightly bigger in block a, b and c compared to the tower. UoB says that all beds are small double but the beds in the blocks are actually just the full double size, with the tower having small double beds. The kitchen can be quite small - very limited cupboard space and not really enough room for more than one person to cook at a time with the kitchen layout. However this isn’t too much of a problem as everyone doesn’t usually cook at exactly the same time. Also, with much more people living in the tower the fire alarm tends to go off more often than blocks (at least once a week in my first semester!). Regardless, the tower does have better views especially higher floors looking out onto the vale and I would highly recommend.

A bit pricey but well worth it. The rooms are very nice, with plenty of storage and actual en-suite bathrooms compared to the wetrooms at most other UoB accomodation on the vale. The kitchen can be quite small if you are self catered, so you will often have to work around others or plan to cook when nobody else is in the kitchen, which can be frustrating at first but you'll get used to this very quickly.

Had the pleasure of living on the top (19th) floor, beautiful view. These halls do not have a cleaner except for public areas + the showers so any flat cleaning is up to you. Kitchen/Lounge area great, really comfy large sofas, with a big white wall which we pointed a projector at for movies. Bedrooms have very limited floor space in the tower, but it is better in the blocks. Nice separate shower rather than a wet room which is a bonus. There is enough storage for most people. Overall, I’d say it’s worth the premium price.

Not cleaned entire year, meal plan is AWFUL. So expensive and just s***. Block door, hallways and lift are an absolute disgrace and stink of dead things which is never cleaned. Maintenance is hit and miss. Lift breaks at least twice a semester.
