Large campus, very good natrual environment. Good support from university staff.
So far being at the university of York, I have felt extremely welcomed by the staff members, in particular by the college well-being staff. We had a welcoming talk showing us who to go to if our mental health, for example, takes a turn. There is also a security app which the university use which is designed to help students if they are ever in a situation which they need more help or aid. My accommodation room feels more like a home than a student accommodation. We have had many lectures which focus on career opportunities as well as career fairs to help encourage students to start looking at different career paths that they may be interested in that they hadn't been aware of before. The university of York has a wide range of societies and sports club. I have participated in the canoe society which has been affordable for me and has allowed me to be able to meet more students in different years and doing different courses to myself.
Very bad university do not care about your health at all physical or mental! Supervisors are also very unsympathetic. Course content is also taught very poorly and lecturers only help their favourites!!
Thank you for taking the time to share your experience. We’re very sorry to hear that your time at York has not met your expectations. We aim to provide accessible wellbeing and mental health support to all students through services like our Student Hub and our Open Door team, as well as through our academic supervision and College support teams. If you feel comfortable, we’d encourage you to get in touch directly with the Student Hub or your department to share more details. Physical health care is provided by your doctor, the NHS urgent care centre at York District Hospital and various chemists, dentists and opticians in York. We advise all students to register with a doctor as soon as they arrive in York. We wish you all the best, Team York
The uni is pretty good. Good vibes and cute ducks
First year CS mature student here. Recently changing careers I can categorically leave a good advise to any potential student. Please do not waste your time going to the university of York. It is an absolutely disgrace! Stay away, if you’re a parent like myself do not send you kids over. I’ve seen the young adults in completely distress trying to learn CS on their own. Work placement can be unfair according to some 3 year students holding first class degree. There are no TA’s available, lacks teaching, often notes contain errors, a few modules referred you to YouTube third party content(RIDICULOUS). The mark system would bring any descent person to their knees from shame, questions correctly answered are completely mark down without any justification. You pass relatively comfortably the programming exams and the grade you get is below the pass rate. Then a endless cat and mouse chasing game between student and lead course leaves you without answers. They can’t care less basically.
Very nice university with new facilities and up-to-date wireless environment. The academic experience is also great. I personally love the libraries, both kings manor and the main one on campus.
Good uni with excellent teaching, the campus is fairly small and nothing amazing but the city is really nice. I’ve loved my time here already and I’m confident that I made the right choice by choosing york!
Overall good so far haven’t used careers much as a first year but I always get emails and updates from them
The University of York has outstanding opportunities and facilities, the university offers constant support regarding mental health, careers etc.
Honestly, if I could go back and pick another Uni I would.
I like it here very much. The staff here are very friendly. And the house is clean and comfortable. The yard is also very clean. It makes me feel good to be here. Especially Ebony because she was so kind and patient
The campus is quite nice (although all the blocks on campus west are old and filled with silverfish), some departments are lovely, but the student union is just in the pocket of the uni - they don’t do anything for students! The only good things that YUSU do are societies and the campus bars. They partnered with a company that scammed students for all their official club nights in the city, and claimed they listened to student concerns when making the decision (they didn’t!). The VC and other uni administrators don’t care about students at all, just profit. TL;DR lovely city, functional campus, great teaching staff, great societies, but terrible representation for students at every level.
Good impression of the university of york
What can I say, a good place… love the city and living there so much! The campus is really pretty in terms of the lake and greenery, and the ducks have become firm friends of mine. Ngl most of the buildings are ugly af but we move. Issues with the student union at the moment not actually listening to students and partnering with a problematic events network for ‘official club nights’.
CS grad here, do not like my experience, especially after Covid-19. Some of the staff are great, but most of them do not know what they are doing. e.g. Professors suggests doing something for your assessment, and you got penalized for doing that after marking. Gradings are harsh and without any sense (some people write almost the same answer for a question while one get maximum point and the other gets 0, with no academic judgment appeal lol). They scaled four assessments in the final year, so this is not the place if you care about fair marking/classification. Career service reviews your CV, cover letter and holds mock interviews, nothing else. I must note that the CS department invests a lot of money in the facilities, and considering the university itself is pretty young compared to others, they are yet improving. But if you have an offer from the same ranked university, take it as they need more time for improving. I believe their actual rank should be around 35.
A great university with lots of student support. The faculty care for their students.
Although coronavirus has so far decimated the majority of my time at university so far (I am a soon to be third year who missed out on summer term of first year and the majority of second year due to the pandemic), my time on campus has been fab. First year was great living in halls (even if it was short lived) as I got a good feel for campus life. In relation to my course Film & TV Production, the support I have had from my lecturers during difficult times either personally or struggles with course content has been brilliant and I am aware that the university has been doing all it can to keep students safe and supported in this difficult time.
it's a lovely campus. I enjoy my undergraduate and master life here. nice environment nice lecturers
Not had a positive experience at the Uni of York
Good place to study, and teachers are really nice to help students to solve problems!
A good experience for my undergraduate life
University of York is a great campus which has all the facilities that is needed.
The campus is very large, the teachers are very nice, and the teaching facilities are very rich.
It’s a good university and good support
Good campus, facilities and selection of societies. Most university departments frequently unavailable
Beautiful campus is very well kept. The library and other study spaces are very spacious and useful for both work alone and group presentation work. Many clubs and societies on offer. Not knowledgeable enough to judge the student union but have heard others complain about them. Never used careers service. Wifi system (eduroam) largely good but did have connectivity issues in first year. Overall would recommend.
Very satisfied, got support whenever needed
I like ducks in the campus~ West campus is beautiful
A university that takes good care of students.
Nice Campus. There are a lot of ducks
The environment is very good, and there are free buses. I like the scenery by the lake very much.
Enjoyed my time here although hard to review as course been online due to COVID
University has been providing bags for each flat to support them during the pandemic. however, whenever anything goes wrong, getting in touch with course administrators, university administrators and accommodation services has been absolutely awful (e.g. never pick up the phone and never replies to voicemails) and has lead to exacerbation of existing mental health problems among students.
A great university, environment is very good.
The teaching quality is excellent, but I haven't been on campus much this year due to Covid, so it is hard to comment on the campus itself.
I really live my time at York Uni and am much happier on Campus, it is better than The Boulevard by Student Roost.
Unfortunately, I can’t participate in many activities due to the epidemic, but I think things will get better and better
mean learning online just sucks compared to campus, but that's true for every school. My teachers have been incredibly caring and understanding, and Pass-Fail (I'm writing this Spring of 2020) has been a great opportunity to learn for the sake of learning.
Great campus, wide range of activities, good classes.
The university is very welcomming and very international. A great place to study and to make friends.
Hes west is older than Hes East and my lectures r based in west thats why I gave it a mediocre review for facilities.. But the facilities in East are very new n modern :-) though its a little deserted theres a bus that travels to town from east campus -> west -> town and back
A beautiful university with a great campus. The best part about York is the college system because you can represent your college if you're not good enough to be in the top university sports or music clubs. Very friendly place and also quite safe in comparison to other universities. Negatives about York is that public transport is poor, clubs keep closing down in town and the student union is border-line useless. They don't listen to students and are rude when complaints are made. Some student reps end up siding with teachers and not representing students causing even more problems. The disability centre is also very poor and it doesn't do nearly enough to help students with health problems. If you want a safe, homely and pretty uni where you'll meet some cool people this is definitely the place, but if you are the type of student that needs a lot of support throughout your studies, look somewhere else.
York University career center is not career-focused. They do not offer any real assistance regarding how to actually land a job. They just provide theories for job searching. You have to speak with 4 different counselors because each counselor has a designated specialty. This means you have to visit the career centre 4 times to get any real assistance with your job search. You are also only given 15 minutes per session, so there is not enough time to really provide you with the help you really need. For future students, my advice is not to do a liberal arts degree, you get nowhere with that. The jobs available to people with liberal arts degrees are cal centre and cleaning jobs. Get a decent degree or no degree at all.
Uni itself is great with good facilities campus-wide. Have been involved with a few societies and i've had loads of fun. The one thing this uni seems to be lacking though is a good student union building and indoor open spaces around the union and campus for activities and get togethers.
Incredibly happy, best years of my life!
There are lots of beautiful areas around campus. Is not parent/commuting friendly! Frequent timetable changes, making it difficult to arrange regular childcare. I understand timetabling is difficult, however other universities manage to accommodate commuting or parent students better. Commuting 5 days a week for 1 or 2 hours a day is ridiculous!
Best decision I ever made. Also, derwent p block till I f****** die (prob gonna be next week at the rate I’m smoking and drinking)
Yeah uni campus was sick tbh. Huge campus, close to the city centre. Library's great. LOVED IT
E tearing my fifth year - love the place
Nice uni with friendly staff and excellent environment
Campus is great. Find the place really relaxing.
Pretty main campus though some buildings past their sell buy date.
Quality. Top range of sports team, societies, volunteering and stuff. Lots of decent jobs. Quality venues. Best sport varsity in the UK.
It's a university that (probably) has just as many waterfowl as students. What more could you want?
WiFi doesn’t work properly in some locations. The university can sometimes be confusing to navigate. The NISA shops are quite expensive.
Campus is STUNNING. And lots of green space and little hide aways. Students Union a little useless. Societies are fab! Careers are very helpful. WiFi is good. Until exam season when half the uni realises they actually have to study
An outstanding university where the people who teach you are experts in their field with national/global recognition. An amazing campus and city, and no cons that have ever reared up.
Complete and utter s******, do not go here.
Whatever kind of person you are you will find something that youd be interested in to do!
Great uni beautiful campus and plenty to do and get involved with
Eurodam was very temptimental and could go down for hours at a time
V disappointed in the philosophy department. Terrible marking compromising bright students and their futures
University of York is a collegiate university where there are 9 colleges around campus and your class is literally a minute away from your room. The social life here is good, I feel welcomed, everyone is friendly, the accommodation is the bomb, there is 24 hours reception at Ron Cooke Hub & also Hes West. Overall, it is the best uni & you can make friends with the cute ducks and geese!!!!
Sports clubs and teams are decent but could do with a bit more funding for pitches for rugby and football. Campus is claustrophobic, the buildings are usually reminiscent of horrendous communist prison-like architecture and the ones that aren't are situated on Hes East - the barren wasteland of Uni of York. Town is nice, but other than club nights, it's mostly left untouched by students as its about 15 mins away by bus.
gym is hella expensive but bar that it's lit
Do not waste your money going to this place - it's beyond bad.
The internet and wifi is practically non-existent, always crashing. The staff are racist and talk to people like they are dirt - disgusting in truth. The Halls of Residence are little better then slums broken windows, mattress holed the kitchen facilities filthy. Clubs are drastically underfunded well the University is in debt so what do you expect. The university look like something from a secondary comprehensive modern built on a sink estate. Don't go here
The collegiate system works well!
the careers service was not bad. could have been better
Clubs & societies are SECOND TO NONE, in terms of community & college spirit - just the right level of "house atmosphere" (imagine the Harry potter houses, you socialise with Gryfindor and there's just enough of the other houses around in lectures to meet them too).
I really enjoy it, the student union is sorta non existence and do some very stupid stuff
York is wonderful University that has gone under the radar for too long! The collegiate system and the more moderate size of the University means that there is an excellent community atmosphere. It also means that there is the opportunities to manage small scale business and events at a very early stage a progress into larger things - gaining invaluable experience that you simply cannot do in other universities. Go to York.
AWFUL UNIVERSITY, IF YOU ARE DULL AND BORING THOUGH YOU'LL LOVE IT.
bloody awful experience in york, the dullest place I've ever been. i dropped out lol no banter
Love this place - great university, great atmosphere, lovely people, etc@
The university is very stress free, There is so much green space and many places to go on strolls. Nightlife could be better but it's not bad.
It was okay, the social life is a total disaster on Heslington East and the student union is a huge waste of time. The on campus bars are awful too. The university expresses blatant sexism additionally by banning international men's day this year but celebrating a week for international womans day. Disappointment of a university really.
An amazing university. The college system makes it so easy to settle in and make friends for a lifetime.
The university of York is a fantastic place to live and work. The campus atmosphere is really beneficial to the university experience.
not a great sense of community but teaching staff are good. Campus security are too over zealous
Halls are really old and have too much wear and tear. My window was broken shut, shower had no temperature controls and my room was tiny! Would not recommend.
I love Alcuin. There's always loads of events and campaigns to get stuck into.
Great people, and a great experience. Plenty of oppotrunities to get involved in societies, clubs, committees etc.
Some areas of campus with outdated buildings which are gradually being replaced, on the whole great facilities, teaching staff and accommodation - look out for the ducks though!
Great community feel. So supportive. A lot of useful facilities and on campus activities and entertainment. Negative - ugly buildings
Nothing to complain about but the Union does not represent student views, motivated by self interest and sideline non-minority issues.
York is a wonderful place to live and the University of York is a great place to study. Wouldn't want to go anywhere else.
York University is just exquisite: the campus, the city, the welcoming people and the high quality standard of teaching.
I love the University of York, in such a short space of time you realise how friendly everyone is and prepared to help you out. There is a society for everyone and there are so many opportunities to try new things and boost your career prospects if you choose to engage in them. The library is huge and there is plenty of space to work quietly or find places to work with friends and always a computer available.
York has made me feel at home, and is also a perfect space for a working environment.
Such an excellent and friendly university, I felt instantly welcomed and included. I love the college system, as it helped me meet so many people who I otherwise may not have met. I can only speak great things about this university, and I'm sure it will help me shape a thriving future for myself.
By far one of the best university's in the country!
Too bad both campuses are so far from each other.
good place nice campus lots of ducks and geese that sometimes attack but you get used to it
Beautifully furnished campus in an amazing historic city full of friendly locals.
Hes East is so nice, however a shop to buy food, etc. would be really helpful.
Hes west is ugly af, but its still f******* amazing here. Tron is also life
The University of York is SO much bigger than I expected it to be! (However it isn't too big that I get lost all the time). All the staff and students are friendly and the WiFi even reaches into the city!I'd recommend anyone to come here as long as their course taught here.
We have an amazing student union who holds tonnes of various events and activities and the university has a lot of intriguing societies and clubs ranging from geek society, Taylor Swift society to caving club and skydiving club. Not forgetting the awesome facilities we have especially the library!
We have a very enthusiastic student union with loads of clubs and societies and especially interesting events. It is a good experience to learn how to organize activities and fundraise. Couldn't have done it with good campus facilities!
