Foss Studios is only a sixteen-minute walk from the University of York and a few more from York St John University. The accommodation is near the city centre, meaning you have plenty of restaurants, shops, bars and local attractions within easy reach.
You can enjoy modern and sleek social spaces, such as the outside area, cinema and gym. For your added benefit there is bike storage, WiFi, laundry facilities and all-inclusive bills. What tenancy length do I need?
Some students choose to stay during the academic year, whilst others – particularly international students – require a tenancy that covers the entire year. You can also find student accommodation that is available for one or two terms, classified as a “short stay” on our search filters.
Should I stay in catered student accommodation?
This is totally up to you! Catered accommodation means you will be served meals at set times in a dining hall, and you’ll likely have access to fewer kitchen facilities than if you were to stay in self-catered accommodation.
What is a guarantor and do I need one?
A guarantor is a person who signs a contract to agree to pay your rent if you are unable to. Most university accommodation requires a guarantor, and this applies to both domestic and international students.
Will I need to pay a deposit on student accommodation?
Most likely, yes, you’ll need to pay a deposit. This will be refunded at the end of your stay as long as there is no damage to the room or property.
What bills will my rent include?
If you are staying in university-run accommodation or private halls, your rent should include any utilities such as electricity, gas, water, and internet. Students are not required to pay council tax, however you may need to fill in an exemption form so make sure you check with your local council.
What is purpose-built student accommodation?
Purpose-built student accommodation (PBSA) are residential buildings designed for students. They are often located close to campus, boast modern facilities, include all bills, and often have staff on site to assist residents.
Will my student accommodation be furnished?
Student accommodation is typically fully furnished. Your room should include at least a bed, clothes storage, desk and chair. You’ll likely need to bring things such as bedding and kitchen utensils, but we have a full list here of everything you’ll need.

Living at Foss Studios has been great, the team are helpful..Social spaces are good for watching movies in the cinema and the pool table. Sometimes I can’t access gym which is annoying but overall team are good

A nice place to stay in as a postgraduate student. I enjoyed the quietness since it helped me to focus on my studies. Foss Studios is close to both the city centre and the campus. There is a lovely garden to spend one's spare time in, too. Any issues in my room were resolved promptly by the property management.

I have found the accommodation a friendly social place. It is quieter than other accommodations has allowed me to focus on university work. The staff have always been available when I have any issues.

The environment is very nice and quiet and the staff are very conscientious and responsible, very nice and great. I wish there were more recreational activities and facilities and it was very close to the school, very convenient and quick.

Nice location and nice staff, it is convenient to access supermarkets and has a bus station that can go to the university directly. The room is clean and quiet. I love Foss Studios.

It’s a great place to stay in a great location, a 15 min walk to the city centre and to campus west. Management are great, and do a good job taking care of everyone’s needs. There’s also a great social space to relax and socialise with others, and management encourages this through various events across the year. All in all it’s a cozy home away from home.

I really did enjoy my time at Foss, the facilities were very nice!! But I had a couple of problems that made me decide not to sign on again. 1) Upon moving in, my room was dirty and the manager at that time ( shes gone now the new management's super nice) had the audacity to suspect me of making the mess? like the whole chunk of chocolate and a few dead bugs that greeted me was my fault? 2) The way Hello Student handles things.. I had tried multiple times reaching out to their Head office to settle my issues but they kept diverting me back to Foss. Its understandable but sometimes there are things you want to speak to higher authority about which is why I felt like they didnt really care! there isnt enough characters for me to express myself but I would suggest noting my experience so you can be more aware before choosing to sign with them btw theyre offering refunds (bc of covid) but only if u move out completely so they can ' sell the room'.. during times like this?!! ok..
