All the Answers You Need About Student Accommodation
What tenancy length do I need?
Some students choose to stay during the academic year, whilst others – particularly international students – require a tenancy that covers the entire year. You can also find student accommodation that is available for one or two terms, classified as a “short stay” on our search filters.
Should I stay in catered student accommodation?
This is totally up to you! Catered accommodation means you will be served meals at set times in a dining hall, and you’ll likely have access to fewer kitchen facilities than if you were to stay in self-catered accommodation.
What is a guarantor and do I need one?
A guarantor is a person who signs a contract to agree to pay your rent if you are unable to. Most university accommodation requires a guarantor, and this applies to both domestic and international students.
Will I need to pay a deposit on student accommodation?
Most likely, yes, you’ll need to pay a deposit. This will be refunded at the end of your stay as long as there is no damage to the room or property.
What bills will my rent include?
If you are staying in university-run accommodation or private halls, your rent should include any utilities such as electricity, gas, water, and internet. Students are not required to pay council tax, however you may need to fill in an exemption form so make sure you check with your local council.
What is purpose-built student accommodation?
Purpose-built student accommodation (PBSA) are residential buildings designed for students. They are often located close to campus, boast modern facilities, include all bills, and often have staff on site to assist residents.
Will my student accommodation be furnished?
Student accommodation is typically fully furnished. Your room should include at least a bed, clothes storage, desk and chair. You’ll likely need to bring things such as bedding and kitchen utensils, but we have a full list here of everything you’ll need.

The sunshine is good, the scenery outside the window is good, the decoration inside the house is good, the geographical location is superior, it is close to the supermarket, not far from the city center and the school, it is very nice

The accommodation has good amenities such as the common room and cinema. It is also a very modern and aesthetic acomodation. Bedrooms are spacious. Staff are also super friendly and helpful. However, the bedrooms, kitchen and bathroom was dirty upon move in. Residue from old tenants were left. We had to throughly clean. Especially the bathroom. That was a little disappointing considering the price. Additionally, some things like the shower and stove has not been checked. A couple careless things that could’ve been rectified before we moved in. We think this would’ve improved our experience. Aside from that it is a good accom, great location with links to shops as well as the Uni of York. :)))

Samuel Tuke has been a great space for me as an International Student. They were super accommodating both in letting me tour the space virtually, as well as during my move in process. I had planned for many things to go wrong but did not need to worry at alL! Manni especially has been very friendly and helpful!
The location is excellent, the front desk is responsible, the room is cost-effective, the cleanliness is satisfactory, and there is a public rest area.
I’ve loved living at Samuel Tuke. The rooms are very modern and the receptionist is very friendly and replies promptly to any questions. The location is also perfect for studying at the University of York and very close to town and lots of shops.

A nice location with easy access to university and York City centre. A friendly and helpful site manager however had to clean the apartment from top to bottom ourselves when first moving in as it was filthy.
Hi there, we are glad you didn't have many issues navigating around the local area from our property and were impressed by the team on-site! It is a shame to hear about the condition of your room when moving in as we deep clean our rooms before new tenants move in. We always aim to do better and will look at options to ensure rooms are never presented to our tenants like this again!
S.T.A is very well placed between UoY and the City Centre; the walk to either is brief. The property manager is incredibly friendly and always willing to help with any issues presented.

Overall satisfactory, but the Internet speed is not good, I hope to increase the frequency of cleaning stairwell. I hope some problems can be found in time, such as the disappearance of pool cue and pool table cleaning and so on.

The hallways get dirty quite rapidly. The social space is limited and there are no study areas

A fantastic accommodation building, always feel very safe and well looked after. The gym facilities and common room are so fantastic and there's somewhere to park my car. Only criticism would be that it is quite expensive, can only afford it sharing a room with my partner. Would be great if they offered some shared rooms/lower priced rooms for friends as this kind of space would have made my earlier university years so much better.

Samuel Tuke is a great place to stay, its within a 30 minute walk to the university along with great internet and great rooms. My only problem is that some students leave the common area's a bit messy and don't use the designated smoking area. But the staff are amazing!

I am very happy to live in this flat. It's very convenient for going to school and shopping. The facilities are also very well equipped. Most importantly the staff are super nice, especially Manni, who has been a constant source of help for me and my friends.

Everything is better than other apartments, the decoration is new . The gym has everything I need. Just the WI-FI signal is not that well sometimes.
