Finding Student Accommodation

Where is York in the UK?

York is a historical city in North Yorkshire, famous for its ties to the Romans and vikings, its rich chocolate-making history, and of course for being one of the most haunted cities in Europe.

How much is student accommodation in York?

Student accommodation prices in York vary between £99 - £311 per week.

What to do in York as a student?

York is jam-packed with things to do for students. Home to two universities - The University of York and York St John University, there is a huge student population and therefore lots of things for students to do and experience.

If you want to enjoy your first few weeks like a tourist, check out attractions such as York Dungeons, the National Railway Museum, York Chocolate Story, take a stroll along York’s famous walls, or perhaps even head out on a ghost walk or two.

If you’re eager to dive headfirst into the student lifestyle, you won’t be disappointed by the amount of bars, pubs and clubs. You can enjoy a drink by the river Ouse, and then head over the bridge to the Micklegate side of town, which is packed full of student-friendly clubs.

More interested in a bite to eat than a night out? York definitely has you covered. There are plenty of delicious restaurants to eat at, but don’t forget to check out Shambles Market for some unique street food. Speaking of Shambles - you definitely need to visit York’s most famous street. The Shambles is home to a whole host of unique shops - including a few that are Harry Potter themed, in honour of the street’s uncanny resemblance to Diagon Alley!

Is York expensive for students?

The price of accommodation in York varies greatly, so whilst you might find something to fit your budget - what about the general cost of living? Heslington, one of York’s main student areas, is home to an Aldi where you can get affordable food and toiletries.

Whilst eating out can be expensive, the wide range of student accommodation available means you can have just as much fun cooking for your housemates in your kitchen as you can eating out. York has great public transport links, and you can benefit from student fares.

Where do students live in York?

The University of York’s campus is located outside of the city centre in a village called Heslington, and so its students tend to live there or in the surrounding areas of Fulford, Tang Hall, and Osbaldwick.

The university campus offers its own student accommodation, known as colleges. Examples of these are Alcuin College, Goodricke College, and Langwith College. Each college offers a unique living experience to its students, and it makes it convenient if you can find halls close to the teaching location of your course.

York St John University is based in the city centre and offers several choices for accommodation, including The Grange and Limes Court. Many students choose to live in private rented accommodation in neighbourhoods such as Clifton, Heworth, and Bootham.

What universities are in York?

York is home to The University of York, as well as York St John University.

Both York-based universities offer something completely different to their students.

All the Answers You Need About Student Accommodation

What tenancy length do I need?

Some students choose to stay during the academic year, whilst others – particularly international students – require a tenancy that covers the entire year. You can also find student accommodation that is available for one or two terms, classified as a “short stay” on our search filters.

Should I stay in catered student accommodation?

This is totally up to you! Catered accommodation means you will be served meals at set times in a dining hall, and you’ll likely have access to fewer kitchen facilities than if you were to stay in self-catered accommodation.

What is a guarantor and do I need one?

A guarantor is a person who signs a contract to agree to pay your rent if you are unable to. Most university accommodation requires a guarantor, and this applies to both domestic and international students.

Will I need to pay a deposit on student accommodation?

Most likely, yes, you’ll need to pay a deposit. This will be refunded at the end of your stay as long as there is no damage to the room or property.

What bills will my rent include?

If you are staying in university-run accommodation or private halls, your rent should include any utilities such as electricity, gas, water, and internet. Students are not required to pay council tax, however you may need to fill in an exemption form so make sure you check with your local council.

What is purpose-built student accommodation?

Purpose-built student accommodation (PBSA) are residential buildings designed for students. They are often located close to campus, boast modern facilities, include all bills, and often have staff on site to assist residents.

Will my student accommodation be furnished?
