I am thinking of placing York as my firm for 2019 entry but am quite a conscience about accommodation. Would be studying politics.... would this college be accessible for that?
There is also mixed reviews but .. that's the same for all the collages

Yes, the college would be accessible for studying politics, as the Politics Department is also in Derwent College.

Too expensive for the value it provides + had a sink in my room but no one ever mentioned the water is not drinkable + got a room in the stairway which should just be illegal, I could hear every single person who entered our block and it was colder and less private and comfortable because of the stairway. Basically just check that the room you got is not in the stairway.
This rating is not realistic as I commute to university and have not experienced any college related activities.
Derwent is crap, do not recommend
I was in edens court (shutter island) the rest of derwent did not really bother with Edens court and it felt very isolated. There was limited use of the car park as staff members parked there so residents could not and had to park 10 minutes away. The showers were very temperamental and I cannot remember the amount of times I had to ring services to fix the non working heating. Cleaning was a minimum and they would not clean unless the kitchen had already been cleaned to a standard. There was no common room so socialise in just the kitchen. It was very overpriced for what we received.
The place to be if you want to enjoy your time at York, best social life, best sports, best atmosphere
Derwent is THE ONLY COLLEGE YOU WANT TO BE IN! Each college has the best: People, Events, College Spirit, College Sports Team and opportunities! It is centrally located and the bar is used by every student - it is always a buzzing environment. It runs its own college events called "Club Ds". They are cheesy, weird nights that take place in the college and are like nothing else. Everyone in the college goes and it just creates a great college atmosphere. Everyone knows everyone and it BY FAR the more SOCIAL and FUN college to live in. Ask anyone at the University - being in Derwent changes your time at York for the better - don't look any further. Go to Derwent. #StayDerwent
It can be very loud and disruptive. Good for party people if you're into that though
Ugly building, basic room and kitchen with no living space. However socially it was great as there was always events or something going on. Food was included and was great value. Location on campus was ideal.
I had a really great time it was really social and clean, but there is nowhere near enough space in the kitchen fridges and such for the number of people compared to other uni halls. The mattress is absolutely rubbish but you get used to it. I'm in a small room and its fairly sized - some of the rooms are absolutely massive and you pay the same price too. Eduroam is just a waste of time (wifi) it cancels out all the time and it's just a nightmare, but it's the same at every university at least on campus. Derwent porters are really helpful, if you have no money they will pay for your taxi and you pay them back later and such.
I've lived in the derwent extension since starting as a fresher, and there are really only two particularly important problems: the kitchens are far too small. There's not enough storage space, and it's pretty much impossible for more than 3 people to be cooking food at once, despite each house having 16 people. The oven in the house I'm in this year looks about 30 years old and there are no labels on the hobs, making working our how to use them a nightmare. The other problem is the JCR - it is very rarely used, the piano's broken and the room itself and most other things in it are also wearing out. Its location means people have to go out of their way to go to it, and they generally don't. Otherwise it's generally clean and modern.

Whenever there was a problem, you could report it and it would be fixed within a few days, it was cleaned every day, perfect place and great value
The social college, and the best college to thrust yourself into the university experience like no other. Equipped with two bars, Derwent is so much fun and so well located in the middle of the whole campus. You will feel an allegiance for life!!
The halls are no where near as nice as the others. It's very social but a little isolated from other colleges

Our Block is modern due to being recently refurbished. Bedrooms are on the small side however large social spaces ensure a great social experience. A really social college with loads of activities!

It is very bare, basic, cheap and ugly. However the college community is what makes it a good place to live.
I came to York and saw Heslington Hall and thought the accomodation might be amazing instead I found concreter buidings with prehistoric toilets, basins from where you can't drink water. Also the kitchens don't have enough room and I think that if we had mini living rooms instead of extra little kitchens it would be a lot better. Socialising wasn't bad but the college still does not feel like a college as there is not enough patriotism and I think more social activities could be made i.e. instead of the 'D' events (ChavD, HalloweenD) they should do that but every week to increase socialisation and make it more a club (King's college do it with guys bar). Also the price is very expensive for what it is when it costs the same to live in a house closer to town, I don't believe it's subsidised enough, especially compared to London accommodation and how much they get subsidised.
Looks awful - but like a mother with an ugly baby, you learn to absolutely adore it for all kinds of reasons. For example, we are by far the most social college with the BEST events and BEST common room. The whole uni envies Derwent not because of the building, but because of the people and events that live and breath inside it!
Fun and exciting and a bit dirty, exactly what you want from a halls no?
