Some students choose to stay during the academic year, whilst others – particularly international students – require a tenancy that covers the entire year. You can also find student accommodation that is available for one or two terms, classified as a “short stay” on our search filters.
This is totally up to you! Catered accommodation means you will be served meals at set times in a dining hall, and you’ll likely have access to fewer kitchen facilities than if you were to stay in self-catered accommodation.
A guarantor is a person who signs a contract to agree to pay your rent if you are unable to. Most university accommodation requires a guarantor, and this applies to both domestic and international students.
Most likely, yes, you’ll need to pay a deposit. This will be refunded at the end of your stay as long as there is no damage to the room or property.
If you are staying in university-run accommodation or private halls, your rent should include any utilities such as electricity, gas, water, and internet. Students are not required to pay council tax, however you may need to fill in an exemption form so make sure you check with your local council.
Purpose-built student accommodation (PBSA) are residential buildings designed for students. They are often located close to campus, boast modern facilities, include all bills, and often have staff on site to assist residents.
Student accommodation is typically fully furnished. Your room should include at least a bed, clothes storage, desk and chair. You’ll likely need to bring things such as bedding and kitchen utensils, but we have a full list here of everything you’ll need.
Here is an exact email we received at St John Central: We are contacting all residents of St John Central as someone had defecated on the 6th floor of the building in the main corridor yesterday. So apply at your own risk I suppose? 😭
I lived here in 2020-2021. Move in experience was okay, but it got worse from here. there was no room to socialise, causing it to be a very lonely time. The shower had a curtain rather than a door, causing the whole ‘wet room’ to flood. When I took my first shower the plug hole was so blocked that I had to turn the shower off after a minute to wait for the water to drain. I reported this to maintenance but was told to keep trying. This flooded the room and the floor actually came up. This was solved within a week, but could have been avoided. Fire alarms went off all the time, causing everyone in the building to have to evacuate, so you never got any decent sleep. It was generally very noisy, with flat parties happening above and below and despite security’s efforts nothing changed. The hoards of students at the front having a smoke was very uncomfortable to walk past everyday too. Location was good for getting to town as well as a short walk to campus. Modern Decor too.
I love this accommodation! It’s so close to the centre and really close to Morrison’s, B&M and ASDA. The rooms are great and the kitchen is lovely and modern. It is meant to be cleaned by staff but this year that hasn’t been possible so can't rate that. The wifi is a bit off at times but bearable. Social experiences have been iffy this year but would be a lot better if normal :)
Great accommodation for first year students.
Lovely accommodation block, made some great friends there, 10/10 would recommend
So I chose St John Central because it looked the most modern one after brickworks. It's a really nice accommodation, let's get that out of the way, but it has a lot of problems sometimes. One of the lifts don't work, a lot of people got stuck in one of them, various times, and security did nothing. Security is b******. There's not in-suit security. And this last week a hate crime happened, which could have been avoided by having the back door closed, but surprise! It doesn't work. The lifts are disgusting and there are stains on the floor. Okay, I'm a person that gets annoyed when someone has afters at 4 AM. If you want or need a quiet place, you better pray or you will have strangers running through your flat before you know it. I'm going onto second year and I wouldn't choose this accommodation just for the fact that it's basically a party dorm.
Considering this accommodation is the second most expensive after the brickworks, its not as amazing as I thought it would be... The rooms are nice and have large windows and really nice bathroom. Kitchen is also nice with big fridge and microwave but you have to bring your own kettle and toaster because they dont provide one. The lifts are disgusting and 1 out of 2 of them dont work. People in the building complain about everything so you cant run or jump because the floor below will hear you. The bins outside pile up and start to smell... There is a bulding site right next it so you hear that all day. The internet cuts off sometimes and maintenance seem to always want to come into your flat to change the lights or doors which can be annoying sometimes. Expect a fire alarm on the first week in the early hours of the morning
The Wifi is terrible, it's always a state, the doors are broken so anyone can walk in and out, there's never anyone in the office to talk to. It does have an ensuite but the hot water doesn't work properly and the showers often overflow. It's inly s 10 minute walk from uni and its in the town centre which is good. But I don't think it's worth the £5500 a year they charge.
Amazing location! No cleaning included with rent - would have helped over holidays to ensure halls were kept clean.
Like a hotel! So nice but flats don't get cleaned only main hall ways
Loved living in central everyone is super friendly and you easily make new friends!
Really nice and modern place to live. The Internet isn't great and the cleaning is left to you.
Perfect location, private bathroom. Excellent help and support if you need, porters quick with anything you may request. Friends for life.
Perfect location for the city centre and uni. Great rooms and communal areas, would 100% recommend!
brilliant social experience great for security everything is on site : washers, dryers, lifts, mail, bins
Modern clean and right in the centre of York! The morning porters and management were so lovely and helpful and we're always quick to come sort an issue even if you were just locked out of your flat. The kitchen is spacious and the rooms/bathrooms were practical and modern. It's expensive but worth it, (especially for the wireless wifi), I loved this place!
A modern and nice bundling with great rooms, however a little far to walk to uni in bad weather and wifi that's a little unreliable
Clean, modern and fab location. Friendly and helpful management team. Wifi often auto logged out making it a task every time I wanted to use the internet.
Accomodation is great. But I currently have awful flatmates
wi-fi involves logging in so games consoles cant connect. probably furthest away from uni
Defiantly the best halls at YSJ
Excellent facilities in the heart of york
Was amazing, best accomodation by far! Will Miss my little room
Great location for town and university campus. Problems were usually dealt with pretty fast. No dishwasher which was a pain when you live in flats of 6! Laundry was cheap to wash & dry. Security on site were lovely and always helpful. No parking whatsoever (unless you're willing to pay extortionate amounts for the car park). M
Love my halls! Great location and room/space size!
Ideal for going out as it's so close to town and not too far away from University
Good halls really enjoyed my year then just a bit expensive and wifi isnt too good
