Apart from a few messy people in the building, everything stays sorta clean. Bathrooms are always a 50/50 but I blame students on that one. Biggest issue has been the WiFi, and it’s very hard to get the university to listen to us and help us fix the issue without making it too hard or time consuming.

All the Answers You Need About Student Accommodation

What tenancy length do I need?

Some students choose to stay during the academic year, whilst others – particularly international students – require a tenancy that covers the entire year. You can also find student accommodation that is available for one or two terms, classified as a “short stay” on our search filters.

Should I stay in catered student accommodation?

This is totally up to you! Catered accommodation means you will be served meals at set times in a dining hall, and you’ll likely have access to fewer kitchen facilities than if you were to stay in self-catered accommodation.

What is a guarantor and do I need one?

A guarantor is a person who signs a contract to agree to pay your rent if you are unable to. Most university accommodation requires a guarantor, and this applies to both domestic and international students.

Will I need to pay a deposit on student accommodation?

Most likely, yes, you’ll need to pay a deposit. This will be refunded at the end of your stay as long as there is no damage to the room or property.

What bills will my rent include?

If you are staying in university-run accommodation or private halls, your rent should include any utilities such as electricity, gas, water, and internet. Students are not required to pay council tax, however you may need to fill in an exemption form so make sure you check with your local council.

What is purpose-built student accommodation?

Purpose-built student accommodation (PBSA) are residential buildings designed for students. They are often located close to campus, boast modern facilities, include all bills, and often have staff on site to assist residents.

Will my student accommodation be furnished?

Student accommodation is typically fully furnished. Your room should include at least a bed, clothes storage, desk and chair. You’ll likely need to bring things such as bedding and kitchen utensils, but we have a full list here of everything you’ll need.

These halls are falling apart, they are mouldy. There is no common space for the 18 people that live here, there is not even room for a table in the kitchen, the price is ridiculous for what it is. Awful living conditions, unacceptable to charge a crazy amount for this dire building. Good location on campus however, and lots of great people living here ( living in a crap space brings people together )

Review 3 now, because that's just how many issues these damn halls have. Practically no sound-proofing so you will hear everything happening in your flat at any given point, and everything outside- which will include construction work that you won't be warned about even when it's on your premise, several residents weren't warned when there was scaffolding right outside their bedroom windows, opening their curtains to strangers standing there. Fire alarms go off constantly (mostly between the hours of 12AM and 4AM), we count ourselves lucky if security show up after ten minutes and one phone call, but we have gone right up to half an hour. We had three fire drills, because apparently they're training us for the emergency Olympics. Furniture was missing from rooms when we showed up, some rooms the furniture was so poorly arranged that you couldn't get into the room. All the while, I know a girl in Elm Grove who reported a broken kettle and got a new one after five minutes.

Two fridges between 18 people, so they put fridges outside of our accommodation that our accessible to anyone who walks by. Many people have had food stolen. Only two of the four communal toilets had locks on them for our first four months here. The first floor is okay, they have a communal space that fits about five people (at least on their floor it's only between 17 people), but 2nd and 3rd floor have no communal spaces, even though after months of promises from head of accommodation and estates that we would receive them, still no sign. There was originally five stools between the 18 of us (which are disabled flatmates couldn't sit) we have now dwindled down to one. The rooms weren't cleaned before our arrival, we found hair, gum, broken glass, and other signs that the rooms were untouched since the last students. Tap water sometimes runs foggy white or brown, if they run properly at all- some spurt out in several directions. Shower boards were falling off with nails sticking out.

The Accommodation Office at the University of Roehampton will only help you if you live in Elm or Lee or one of their other "newly innovated" pride and joy award winners- if you live in semi-ensuite or less, expect apathy and no replies to emails. Newman House offers big rooms aaaaand that's. There's a shower in your room, that sometimes sewage will come up. Sometimes your dorm door won't lock, but never fear, they ONLY JUST installed front door locks after four months of me harassing them, ONLY after a group of men broke into one of our rooms and used it to drugs- to which the response was "Oh, that shouldn't have happened" and little else. I have had several meetings with several head of departments, estates, accommodation, etc, and I have tried my best, my grades have lacked for it, but I have been let down time and time again. Eighteen people to one floor. They don't warn you about asbestos. Damp in the ceilings. Recently we got a second oven- again, between 18 people.

Great flat, great people. Lots of fun to be had in the big rooms. However, the second floor had no living room and three really small kitchens. For 18 people, this really isn't enough. Plus the freezers were always full and we had to go to the special outside ones. But a great time, still.
