My time in Wessex Halls was memorable and enjoyable. I met a wide range of people and had a great experience. The clearers were fantastic and the internet was really quick. The walk into campus isn't the closest of all the accommodations Reading University offers but it offers a view of the lake which is really nice in the spring/summer months. The Ice House was closed the entire of 23/24 which was a shame but there were other social areas and a study room which was quite all year around.

All the Answers You Need About Student Accommodation
What tenancy length do I need?
Some students choose to stay during the academic year, whilst others – particularly international students – require a tenancy that covers the entire year. You can also find student accommodation that is available for one or two terms, classified as a “short stay” on our search filters.
Should I stay in catered student accommodation?
This is totally up to you! Catered accommodation means you will be served meals at set times in a dining hall, and you’ll likely have access to fewer kitchen facilities than if you were to stay in self-catered accommodation.
What is a guarantor and do I need one?
A guarantor is a person who signs a contract to agree to pay your rent if you are unable to. Most university accommodation requires a guarantor, and this applies to both domestic and international students.
Will I need to pay a deposit on student accommodation?
Most likely, yes, you’ll need to pay a deposit. This will be refunded at the end of your stay as long as there is no damage to the room or property.
What bills will my rent include?
If you are staying in university-run accommodation or private halls, your rent should include any utilities such as electricity, gas, water, and internet. Students are not required to pay council tax, however you may need to fill in an exemption form so make sure you check with your local council.
What is purpose-built student accommodation?
Purpose-built student accommodation (PBSA) are residential buildings designed for students. They are often located close to campus, boast modern facilities, include all bills, and often have staff on site to assist residents.
Will my student accommodation be furnished?
Student accommodation is typically fully furnished. Your room should include at least a bed, clothes storage, desk and chair. You’ll likely need to bring things such as bedding and kitchen utensils, but we have a full list here of everything you’ll need.

The Hall is located inside the campus and its spaces are really welcomming. Despite this the kitchen is shared between 12 people, which makes it impossible to live in! The services provided are well organised.

Hi, Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. We’re delighted you had such a positive experience living at Reading. Kind Regards, The Reading Accommodation Team
The value for money was most probably the best thing. The price was decent and definitely a lower budget option. Cleanliness was also fairly reasonable and shared areas were cleaned regularly. Everything else was either mediocre at best, or just generally not great. The wifi was probably the worst thing, I had to report it at least twice and it was still quite unreliable even after it had been ‘fixed’. The heating was often very intense and didn’t have a way to turn it down.
Hi, Thank you for you feedback and review! We're glad to hear that you found value for money to be one of the highlights of your stay here in Reading. We appreciate your feedback that communal spaces were cleaned regularly and that it met your standards. We're sorry to hear that you faced difficulties with the WIFI – we generally receive very positive feedback in our regular customer service surveys regarding WIFI speed, however we do advise that any issues can be picked up directly with the provider Glide whose details are shared on arrival as part of your induction. Each room has both WIFI and ethernet access. Regarding heating, we do encourage students to report all issues via the dedicated Home at Halls app or the 24/7 Halls Hotline so that our team can rectify any issues as soon as possible. Wessex Halls was a great experience, I met many new friends there and had some great times. I did have concerns with the shared bathrooms, but in reality there were actually pretty good and didn’t cause me any issues at all. The halls were cleaned and well looked after. Staff there were very polite.

I enjoyed living at Wessex and met a lot of amazing people there that I have created long lasting relationships with. The cleanliness of the building however, could be better the bathroom were always almost dirty and so was the kitchen but overall living there was comfortable

Room is great but the building is very open so people from outside your flat can use designated bathrooms as they are shared. Kitchens are nice and bathrooms and well kept.

Best halls at Reading uni, layout of the halls means that you are constantly running into neighbours who you probably would have not met if it was in the traditional flat format. Had just been refurbished before we moved in which meant that it was definitely value for money. Perfect distance from uni buildings on campus as it is not too close and not too far unlike other halls. Couldn't recommend more highly :)

Would recommend Wessex to anyone! I have met friends for life in this accommodation. I’m sad to leave as it’s genuinely the best accom to live in. So social, and you get to know everyone, this being due to the open corridor layout. I would say that security do love to be annoying during Wednesday union pres. we’ve had noise complaints left right and centre. Most being around 10:30. Security do get very rude, even when you try to be level with them. As a group of girls who love to party, this part of the accom I do not like. Therefore if you’re after a more quiet accom this isn’t the one for you. Wessex has a study room, which is great for exam season, and in all honesty throughout the year for assignments. It’s always quiet and everyone is wanting to work. Overall I would say if you’re wanting to make the best of friends this is the accom for you.
Would always recomended wessex, best social aspect, met so many people I am friends with still after 4 years. Very modern for the price too. Shared bathrooms are fine don’t let that put you off!!
You get what you pay for with Wessex Hall, the facilities are what you would expect. The rooms are modern, the bathrooms recently upgraded, but often not as clean as I would have liked. the social experience very much depends on who is in your flat, but the open corridors allow you to meet more people in the building.
Not the cheapest but is acceptable to live in
Had a great time, social life was great even with Covid! Facilities were basic but price reflected that

Wessex is the best halls at Reading! The JCR are always amazing at making sure that there are cracking nights out and socials for you to go on! Not the place to live if your not up for a night out or dislike hearing people doing pres, it’s noisy but far more social than any of the other halls in Reading. Christmas social is a great night and definitely say get involved in everything that there is in Wessex! The football teams are a lot of fun! As long as you’re willing to go through a bit of hazing it’s totally worth it! Internet can be a bit spotty at sometimes. But nothing to bad.
living in wessex was the best first year ever, made so many amazing friends n memories, all open corridor so made loads of friends compared to other halls, socials, good facilities 10/10 would recommend wish i could go back
Loved my time in Wessex, it’s a shame some of my flat mates were c****!
Really well maintained hall with constant maintenance checks. If something needs to be fixed it’s done immediately. A bit isolated but a good sense of community within
Cheapest at Reading. Great socially and less than 5 mins from centre of campus
Amazing halls, great social atmosphere. JCR plan fab socials/nights out! Wouldn't have had such a good first ear without it.
I don’t think I could’ve asked for a better hall. Very social and friendly, been able to get absolutely plastered most nights, either in Ice House (which is f****** sick and very well-priced) or just in the kitchen as some have sofas which is extra cotch. The JCR is one of the best out there as they are fun, friendly and very reliable, whether you need someone to talk to or to get you back into your bed safely after a messy night. The layout is very sociable so you can mingle easily with other kitchens, plus events and socials are also held to bring everyone together. If anyone s*** talks Wessex it’s probably because they’re jealous they didn’t get to stay here. The cleaners make sure you do tidy the kitchen up a little (makes you feel like an adult with responsibility) but they do a good job themselves. Also kitchens have two ovens with hobs and two fridges/freezers so there’s plenty of space. If it could, Wessex would get more than 5 stars.
Such a noisy hall - security seemed to be lacking to stop the constant screaming down the hallways. Grateful I was on the 3rd floor so at least I could get some sort of phone signal, and didn't have people stomping above me. The smallest kitchen possible - couldn't fit 3 people in there cooking, let alone the 11 it was meant to serve. The toilets regularly ran out of paper, and over the weekend were horrific. Half way through the year took away all but like 3 hoovers from the floor, so trecking up and down to an unlocked cupboard to try and find a hoover was never fun when you wanted to clean your room. Cleaning staff very friendly and the kitchen was always lovely on a Wednesday, just the hall itself and it's non-existent social spaces were not.
The home of the "lads". I enjoy a good night out but if you choose wessex prepare to have a lot of sleepless nights as people are very loud and the walls are paper thin. plus the beds are really uncomfortable, so i suggest buying a mattress topper
Best halls in the world , so sociable and much cheaper than other halls. Has the most fun in social events and everyone on the halls is very patriotic !!!!! No no no seriously folks , it's the best!
Always something to do if you're a football lad
The best halls for social purposes, never dull, however toilets and bathrooms could do with updating and the feel of the halls is slightly old.
Best decision I've ever made was to choose Wessex.
Wessex is the best halls because its so social! I've made so many friends from other kitchens and halls because the corridors are open. the jcr are also amazing and I just love it. Its also been done up so its the best value for money!
No other halls in Reading has the social energy that Wessex does, the friends you make in halls will be your friends for life. There is an electricity and excitement about the place every day you stay there.
The best place to spend your first year in Reading
The best halls on the whole of campus! Social aspect is brilliant, a nice short walk from camous and the local co-op and the bus stop. Perfect.
Wessex Hall was the only hall I could afford with my student loan, but I'm glad I am here! The social atmosphere is incredible and everyone in my kitchen is really lovely. I'm in a basic room on the first floor and I find the facilities are more than adequate. The cleaners do a great job as well, and I've never had to wait for a shower as there are plenty. We also have the best JCR and the warden is very helpful and caring.
Wessex Hall is the cheapest of all Reading's on campus accommodation, but you most definitely get a good deal! You share bathrooms and showers but they are cleaned every weekday so they aren't often dirty, and you get your own washbasin in your room. The kitchens have good fridge and cupboard space between 10 people and the social spaces (common room etc) are especially good for freshers and other social events. The halls hotline is usually very responsive and works well to resolve your complaints, the security staff are always on hand, and the cleaners come regularly and work efficiently! There's wifi and direct internet throughout the building and the layout of the building itself means it's very sociable and open plan.
So much good. Its a pleasure to have this good hall. Everything is very good.
The best year of my life! The open plan layout means getting around and getting to know everyone was so easy. The social vibe and the jcr were excellent along with the strongest community spirit if any of the halls. Also with the strongest halls football team and the prettiest grounds, which help to make up for the lack of athstetics that the other halls thrive off, this is undoubtably the best hall for any prospective student
Literally the best halls ever so open and everyone becomes like a family
A really fun hall, where its ridiculously easy to make friends. Has the best social life and JCR in the uni and has some of the best nights out. Plus it has its own bar.
If you're going to live here be prepared to get none of your deposit back. The younger students who live here are careless and costs are coming in almost every week that people probably won't fess up to so you're going to get charged for their screw ups.
Best community spirit of all Reading halls
The best hall for socialising and meeting people, rather than being restricted to only knowing and living with people in a flat.
Good situation not far from central campus. Comes with library, common room, cocktail bar, cinema and large hall featuring activities and dance classes. Sociable corridor style. -Compromises: Not the newest. It has everything you need, but not of highest quality. Would still recommend!
Have loved living here and have a beautiful room for the price I have paid! (2nd Floor)
Wessex doesn't have the best facilities but it is definitely a sacrifice worth making for the incredible atmosphere that Wessex has. The layout of the hall means that I have made many more friends than I would have done if I had been in a self contained flat and as Wessex is one of the cheapest halls everyone is of the same mind when it comes to money. I absolutely love my upgraded room and the halls are never cold in winter :)
Amazing- one of the best decisions of my life!
Really great hall, wouldn't want to pay any more or be anywhere else. Not the newest or even the nicest but everyone is so friendly and a real sense of community here.
The best halls for social interaction and getting to know lots of different people.
