All the Answers You Need About Student Accommodation
What tenancy length do I need?
Some students choose to stay during the academic year, whilst others – particularly international students – require a tenancy that covers the entire year. You can also find student accommodation that is available for one or two terms, classified as a “short stay” on our search filters.
Should I stay in catered student accommodation?
This is totally up to you! Catered accommodation means you will be served meals at set times in a dining hall, and you’ll likely have access to fewer kitchen facilities than if you were to stay in self-catered accommodation.
What is a guarantor and do I need one?
A guarantor is a person who signs a contract to agree to pay your rent if you are unable to. Most university accommodation requires a guarantor, and this applies to both domestic and international students.
Will I need to pay a deposit on student accommodation?
Most likely, yes, you’ll need to pay a deposit. This will be refunded at the end of your stay as long as there is no damage to the room or property.
What bills will my rent include?
If you are staying in university-run accommodation or private halls, your rent should include any utilities such as electricity, gas, water, and internet. Students are not required to pay council tax, however you may need to fill in an exemption form so make sure you check with your local council.
What is purpose-built student accommodation?
Purpose-built student accommodation (PBSA) are residential buildings designed for students. They are often located close to campus, boast modern facilities, include all bills, and often have staff on site to assist residents.
Will my student accommodation be furnished?
Student accommodation is typically fully furnished. Your room should include at least a bed, clothes storage, desk and chair. You’ll likely need to bring things such as bedding and kitchen utensils, but we have a full list here of everything you’ll need.

Management creates a welcoming environment
Great value for money with convenient location. The staff is incredibly kind and helpful. Highly recommended.
Wouldn’t recommend staying at Bowman House if completely honest. The management is very poor with little interest in student wellbeing. Maintenance is slow and the lift is never fixed or is constantly breaking. Never has been as clean as it should be and no extra cleaning measures have been taken during the pandemic. Never any kind of security (even out of office hours). Many complaints have been made about strangers wandering into the reception area and the communal area since no security is provided and this puts all residents at risk.
It's a good value for money place to stay with residents from all around the world with a nice common space and a group of kind people available for help.
Living in bowman house has been great. Bethany is always friendly and helpful. She had tried to make living in bowman fun despite the ongoing pandemic. The location is fantastic it’s a 10minute walk to city centre which is very convenient.
Not as modern as comparable university accommodations which are priced cheaper
It's well located, you can walk to Boots library and city campus within ten- fifteen minutes. Plenty of transport links to get you all around Notts: bus, tram and train, all relatively close by. You're close to plenty of shops etc too. My studio is pretty spacious. I have a large desk, a TV which I never use, a 3/4 bed, a good sized fridge and a mini freezer contained therein. The bathroom is fine too. The wifi is decent, not amazing but fine for everyday usage. The laundry *is* ran by Circuit, but it's based on a phone app rather than usage of coins, which is much more practical. Not once have my clothes been flooded, and they are actually clean upon completion of the wash, which is nice. This was a problem when I stayed at Glasshouse in previous years. The staff here are friendly and willing to help you with problems, and it's genuinely a pleasant place to live. More costly than other places, but you're also getting more for your money, so definitely worth it in my opinion.
Best building ever. All the walls are great, tried to punch it but it didn’t break. Building will not collapse on you. Also I’m just here for Tracy. Tracy is the new Mother Teresa. Not maybe not Mother Teresa, but close. I think. Maybe. #DontFireTracy2k20
Friendly staff, great location, fun activities and networking opportunities.
Great staff and environment. Good range of preference in terms of either being social or wanting personal space.
It's been a great experience living here, wouldn't want to change it for the world. Made exceptional friends, and the location means anything you want is a possibility at really any point of time. Feel in the mood to club at 2am? Get dressed and walk over. Fancy kebabs at midnight? There's like a million food places around. In the mood for a conversation? Head on over next door, everyone's got time for you. The admin staff is great too, they've really helped me with a lot of things this year. The reception has really taken care of me. Being what can only be described as a fully grown man-child, having them around was invaluable. Don't second guess yourself out of living here, best accommodation in the city. #DontFireTracy2k20
I really enjoyed staying at Bowman House. The location is right in the city centre and perfect to reach anything you need with a simple walk, including university facilities. Plus, i was able to make really good friends and spending time with them in the communal areas and watch tv and playing pool.
Tracy has been a credit to HFS, made me feel so welcomed and relaxed. It’s a 5 minute walk to NTU and all necessities are within a 15 minute radius. can’t complain
Covid-19: Enforcing social distancing rules, not allowing more than one person in enclosed spaces, handgels etc
Wouldn't really recommend, students don't respect each other and constantly make noise well into the night, leave the common room trashed, and set the fire alarm off weekly (leaving us all blamed for wasting the fire services time) - no real concrete action is taken, only emails that everyone mocks and ignores. Rooms are alright, staff are mostly friendly and the common room is alright, except you do get stared at every time you come in and out of the building by other students sitting in there, because you have to walk through it to leave. Not worth the price imo.
Really friendly staff who go above and beyond to make your experience and nice one. Tracy the customer service advisor really stuck her neck out to help me when I was struggling to find a place. She called as soon as there was cancellation and made the whole process stress free. The rooms are spacious and clean, with all the ideal appliances and mod cons. Perfect location close to NTU Campus. Fantastic overall.
Really friendly atmosphere, noise level is minimum, clean area and the rooms are cosy
lift worked for 5 days in the whole time I was here. Recieved less than half of my deposit back for having a piece of food in my fridge. The TV didn't work and the pool cues were locked away from 5pm-9am. Not worth the money and wouldn't recommend it.
This hall is not one I would recommend, the lift broke the day after the move in and was repaired only 5 months later... There were also some issues with the commin room. But otherwise it is very close to the City campus and very secure
Absolutely appalling management. Lift not working for first two terms and then broken again for another two weeks. Apparently i am the only one to complain. BS !! But its OK !! they offered pizza and a few drinks to compensate. Disgusting attitude and arrogance. AVOID at all costs.
Lift has not worked since the start of term, constantly receiving emails from staff regarding an "engineers visit" however nothing has been resolved. Parents have had to drag bags upstairs to move students in. Constant noise issues with no action taken, staff will again send email warnings, students can get away with trashing the entire building and screaming and shouting well into the night with no consequence. Maintenance at homes for students make false promises and refuse to follow up. Currently there's no water supply in the building and nobody has been informed when this will be resolved. Do not book it's not worth the rent
Not worth the money. Reception staff are rude and any problems either do not get fixed or take weeks to be fixed. Common room is uncomfortable and sky tv has never worked. Constant emails from reception staff being rude. Parking gates are always locked.
