All the Answers You Need About Student Accommodation
What tenancy length do I need?
Some students choose to stay during the academic year, whilst others – particularly international students – require a tenancy that covers the entire year. You can also find student accommodation that is available for one or two terms, classified as a “short stay” on our search filters.
Should I stay in catered student accommodation?
This is totally up to you! Catered accommodation means you will be served meals at set times in a dining hall, and you’ll likely have access to fewer kitchen facilities than if you were to stay in self-catered accommodation.
What is a guarantor and do I need one?
A guarantor is a person who signs a contract to agree to pay your rent if you are unable to. Most university accommodation requires a guarantor, and this applies to both domestic and international students.
Will I need to pay a deposit on student accommodation?
Most likely, yes, you’ll need to pay a deposit. This will be refunded at the end of your stay as long as there is no damage to the room or property.
What bills will my rent include?
If you are staying in university-run accommodation or private halls, your rent should include any utilities such as electricity, gas, water, and internet. Students are not required to pay council tax, however you may need to fill in an exemption form so make sure you check with your local council.
What is purpose-built student accommodation?
Purpose-built student accommodation (PBSA) are residential buildings designed for students. They are often located close to campus, boast modern facilities, include all bills, and often have staff on site to assist residents.
Will my student accommodation be furnished?
Student accommodation is typically fully furnished. Your room should include at least a bed, clothes storage, desk and chair. You’ll likely need to bring things such as bedding and kitchen utensils, but we have a full list here of everything you’ll need.

Absolutely awful, tiny rooms that should be illegal, barely any other affordable accom
Thank you for taking time to review your stay at Hampden. We’re sorry to hear you found the room to be tiny.

Thanks for leaving your review. We are really pleased Hampden lived up to your expectations, offering space to socialise and get to know your flat mates. The property has been recently refurbished so does have a nice new feel to it.
The accommodation has a Great social life and very close to university campus. The staff were always warm and welcoming and very social able and informative. It was a great first year expirecne.
Thank you for the positive review. Great to receive positive feedback.
Really social place due to the landing but no actual socalising space. Very smalll rooms
LOVED IT. dont hesistate. I wanted Byron and didn't get it but went with Hampden as I wanted to be right in the city and I'm so pleased I did. Yes its very small and not much space but if you are a social person its great. I thought everyone would be really chavvy and horrible but most people were amazing. The balcony is the best-seller, such a great place for meeting all the flats and for freshers it was brilliant. Get a flat upstairs though!!! otherwise no balcony and downstairs isn't very social, so if you are antisocial downstairs hampden is perfect for you. I did have a few mates downstairs tho so don't be worried about that you will just have to put yourself out there more and come upstairs if u want to socialise.
Rooms at Hampden are extremely small and there is no space to socialise.
Great accomidation for social, and great location.
Could be made better on the outside Great location for socialising and being in city center
You're paying for worse than prison living conditions. Two of the bedrooms in the flat had black mould and on top of that I had a woodlice infestation. The wifi also didn't work in my room for the whole of first term when my lectures were online. No social space, only 6 plastic chairs in the kitchen which will wreck your back. Honestly nothing good to say apart from the location. If you're going to live here bring bug spray and a dehumidifier!
Thank you for you feedback, we’re sorry you’ve experienced these issues with your flat. Please contact the hall reception in person or via the app with your location, we are available 24/7, and we will have a member of the team attend today to address your concerns.

The only place you should be living. Fantastic location, I can be hungover and roll outta bed and still be on time for lectures! Super social great for parties as it is very easy for flats to mix! We are great friends with the cleaners and Michelle in particular is a legend! Ive seen pretty much all the other accommodations most of them have loads of annoying gates to get in which means shit parties, also a lot of the private providers don't have cleaners which means the flats quickly become pretty grotty. Also Hampden doesn't break the bank, I would strongly recommend to first years with lectures on city campus.
Hampden is amazing would highly recommend if you wanna make friends easy or if you value sleep because you really only have to wake up before a lecture 20 mins before because it’s so close to the city campus buildings. Everyone is friendly and it’s really easy to make friends with people in other flats aswell as your own. The rooms aren’t the best as you can see in the pictures but you get used to it quickly and it’s easier to make it feel cosy. They also heat up quicker if you’re cold and turn on the heating. Would definitely recommend this hall because the social side is great and that can change your experience entirely from speaking to other people who have been in halls where it’s not as social :) the cleaning and hall maintenance staff are great too very friendly
Moving into Hampden halls has to be one of the best decisions I’ve made. Without coming to an open evening and relying solely on photos, understandably I was concerned about the size of the rooms and the social spaces at hampden, but honestly it’s what you make it. My room, noted, is smaller compared to all of the other accommodations at NTU but I’ve made mine so cozy, and it’s bigger than what people make it out to be. If your looking for a crazy social life and a movie experience at uni, hampden is defo gonna be the right choice for you. We’re classed as the most sociable accommodation when you speak to other people in different halls, and frequently get the comment “wish I was in hampden”. I’ve been very lucky to move in next to someone who’s now my bestfriend, and to move Into a flat filled with the best people I now know, which is very similar for all the flats at hampden. Best decision of my life and 100% recommend x
Was very hesitant about this halls in the run up to move in, however I was extremely surprised. Although the rooms are small they are not as small or bad as they look, I managed to make mine cosy and they have plenty of storage. The team who manage the halls are brilliant and extremely friendly.; this also goes for the cleaning staff. In terms of social experience it is amazing. No other halls are quite like it, living in Hampden is almost like living in a little neighbourhood. You can knock on anyones door and ask if they're going out or if they need to go to the shop and I can guarantee you will make friends in many of the flats, not just your own - which after speaking to course mates, no one else in another accommodation can say they have friends in other flats in their halls.
the room is a prison and shower is terrible we have had a guy come up twice to fix it... the heating went off in building when it was -2 outside, they told us it can not be fixed till Monday this was Friday night... washing machines have competently broken.. so you have to do your washing in another building... there are 168 rooms and they get out of us £785473.92 and they can only give us three washing machines and three tumble dryers and you still have to pay for them £2-£2.50 for the washing and £1 for the tumble dryer..... feel ripped off... the night staff are good, wifi is brilliant...
Very good for socialising, probably one of the most social halls as its really like living in a block of flats. Management were good, cleaners were very nice. The rooms were tiny as my hands outstretched could reach from one end to the other, but cosy in my opinion. Internet was okay from what I can remember. Location is great, on the doorstep of NTU.
The building creeks and the pipes keep you up at night, the management is disgusting and will do the bare minimum for you
I'm paying £104 a week for a glorified prison cell, the walls are breaze block, every thing is broke and the only social space is our 4 meter living room if you can call if that becasue all there are are six chiars you would rush not to get in school it's just generally s***.
Absolute rip off, feels like a prison and the rooms are damp
Great location but low security measures and could do with a refurbishment. However, the social side is fabulous!
What can you expect for the price
Small, cramped, great showers, not enough space, but location is great.
Best cleaning lady ever! Perfect location for lecturers and going out.
Feels like you live in a prison
World's most over priced and grotty halls. Separate flats keep you isolated.
