Some students choose to stay during the academic year, whilst others – particularly international students – require a tenancy that covers the entire year. You can also find student accommodation that is available for one or two terms, classified as a “short stay” on our search filters.
This is totally up to you! Catered accommodation means you will be served meals at set times in a dining hall, and you’ll likely have access to fewer kitchen facilities than if you were to stay in self-catered accommodation.
A guarantor is a person who signs a contract to agree to pay your rent if you are unable to. Most university accommodation requires a guarantor, and this applies to both domestic and international students.
Most likely, yes, you’ll need to pay a deposit. This will be refunded at the end of your stay as long as there is no damage to the room or property.
If you are staying in university-run accommodation or private halls, your rent should include any utilities such as electricity, gas, water, and internet. Students are not required to pay council tax, however you may need to fill in an exemption form so make sure you check with your local council.
Purpose-built student accommodation (PBSA) are residential buildings designed for students. They are often located close to campus, boast modern facilities, include all bills, and often have staff on site to assist residents.
Student accommodation is typically fully furnished. Your room should include at least a bed, clothes storage, desk and chair. You’ll likely need to bring things such as bedding and kitchen utensils, but we have a full list here of everything you’ll need.

Wickham Hall is the best on-site accommodation with every room having an ensuite.
I live at home while I am studying but have seen the halls and they look great.
Fast wifi which was free so nothing to complain about. Social spaces were a bit bland and our sofas were damaged upon arrival.
the best accomodation, you wont find one better in the uk.
Not the most social place, would have liked a general hang out space for a few flats to mix
Good, very clean and friendly staff
Wickham hall is very modern which attracted me to apply to live here. The location is brilliant because you can wake up ten minutes before your lecture and make it on time! I like that it’s only 6 flats per flat so it’s more cosy and you know who’s coming and going compared to other accommodations. The rooms themselves are quite small so I wouldn’t recommend bringing too much with you as it easily gets cluttered. Bathrooms are fantastic with a huge mirror and the showers are great compared to most unis. Unfortunately, the walls in wickham are paper thin so you can hear absolutely EVERYTHING. I also recommend you buy thick mattress toppers because the mattresses are hard compared to connies?? Not sure why when we pay more! Overall, I wouldn’t have chosen anywhere else to live because it’s made my first year at uni very easy!
Wickham Halls was great accommodation with the close proximity to lectures and the library. Wickham Halls was great for social experience in first year. The only negative factor is that Wickham is very expensive
Wickham is a lovely clean place to live and Definetly one of the best out of the places I looked. However the mirrors in the rooms aren't too good and prefer manual lights so you can turn the fan off at night rather than waiting 20mins. Blackout curtains would be nice too
Anazin coean, friendly atmosphere
Loved living in halls, the kitchen area and rooms were great value
Wonderful place to stay in my first year, perfect amount of room for what you want, nothing too cramped and communal area provides enough to get on with others.
Great rooms, amazing cleaning staff, shame about the price, though!
Great social area and rooms are decent. Internet across campus is what ruins it.
First impressions were good. I initially thought that the rooms were a bit small but it turns out that it's manageable. Some people were lucky enough to get the corner rooms of certain blocks so they have bigger rooms. Rooms are warm, never been cold. As a gamer, there's no place to put my wires!!! A hole at the back of the desk would have been useful as my wires for my laptop (keyboard, mouse etc) are everywhere. Communal area is good. Lots of space. Sofas are ok. A bit hard but you get used to them. Same with the mattresses, Very hard mattresses.
Absolutely beautiful place to live, plenty of room and really clean. AB internet was soul destroying. It's a lot of money for essentially an added bathroom but to be fair it is worth it.
Great location in the heart of the campus. Bright rooms with ensuite and 3/4 beds. Social spaces are large and bright and are cleaned regularly. A great halls to live in.
the Internet is much better! The cleaners don't do a lot so can't really mark them full marks on hoovering.
Lovely place to live, can get abit lonely if you don't make the effort to come out your room and see people - nice to have my own bathroom too! I have to admit the beds could be comfier but I solved that by buying a mattress topper :)
Really lovely place to live. Modern bedrooms and living spaces and you get your own bathroom! . The only problem I've found is that the senior and assistant residents I have encountered aren't that helpful and don't do a great job. The accommodation lady herself though is really lovely and helpful and has time for everyone.
Terrible WiFi which still hasn't been fixed despite being said they would :/ had a broken freezer and broken fridge handle and various other problems.
Again the wifi isn't great but I love where I live. It is right in the middle of campus and is a 2 minute walk to anything! Our kitchen/living room is so big compared to other universities and even has a paid for tv with a license. However my flat is on the ground floor meaning unlike the other flats we don't have our front door open so we haven't really socialised with the other people in our block.
Everything in our flat is breaking, the beds and sofa are so uncomfy, I can hear the room above weeing at night and all of the walls are paper thin. The fire alarm has been off 6 times since the start of the semester and the majority of them have happened due to a technical issue in a room...which still haven't been fixed!!!
The cleaners are the best part. Always up for a chat and are there to help with whatever you need
Really nice rooms but problems with senior resident
Spending my first year in Wickham halls was an experience which I will never forget.
I loved my time living at Wickham for first year at BG. The building is modern/new and the cleaners came into the communal area everyday. Loads and loads of storage space in rooms. Very safe and friendly.
alot of space in the kitchen to sit and talk and the rooms are modern with lots of room.
