Q
My son wanted Henry Price accommodation but had Devonshire Hall allocated. Is it entirely geared up for arts/music etc as he's studying sport and I'm worried. He's friendly natured and sociable so maybe worrying too much?

All the Answers You Need About Student Accommodation

What tenancy length do I need?

Some students choose to stay during the academic year, whilst others – particularly international students – require a tenancy that covers the entire year. You can also find student accommodation that is available for one or two terms, classified as a “short stay” on our search filters.

Should I stay in catered student accommodation?

This is totally up to you! Catered accommodation means you will be served meals at set times in a dining hall, and you’ll likely have access to fewer kitchen facilities than if you were to stay in self-catered accommodation.

What is a guarantor and do I need one?

A guarantor is a person who signs a contract to agree to pay your rent if you are unable to. Most university accommodation requires a guarantor, and this applies to both domestic and international students.

Will I need to pay a deposit on student accommodation?

Most likely, yes, you’ll need to pay a deposit. This will be refunded at the end of your stay as long as there is no damage to the room or property.

What bills will my rent include?

If you are staying in university-run accommodation or private halls, your rent should include any utilities such as electricity, gas, water, and internet. Students are not required to pay council tax, however you may need to fill in an exemption form so make sure you check with your local council.

What is purpose-built student accommodation?

Purpose-built student accommodation (PBSA) are residential buildings designed for students. They are often located close to campus, boast modern facilities, include all bills, and often have staff on site to assist residents.

Will my student accommodation be furnished?

Student accommodation is typically fully furnished. Your room should include at least a bed, clothes storage, desk and chair. You’ll likely need to bring things such as bedding and kitchen utensils, but we have a full list here of everything you’ll need.

Gorgeous place to live but not much social life in comparison to other accommodations. Further out of the city than other accommodations, but accessible via bus/longer walk, and Headingley is easy to get to. Great place to live.

I would avoid at all costs. This wasn't my choice, I got put in it because the one i applied for was oversubscribed. Very far from other student accommodations and quite far from the University and the city centre. A long walk to do laundry, which can be annoying especially in winter. Very strict no noise policy after 11pm and you can get fined. Footpaths are very narrow and its quite dangerous to walk alone at night.

Way too expensive. I'm used to £350-400 a month for a old miner's house, not £450 a month each in 5 bedroom flat. The accomodation is close to the University, but it's also next to a very sketchy wooded area. The pathways are too thin as you have to walk onto the road to overtake people because none of them are eager to learn and are in no rush. I ended up setting off early and going to the library to avoid 'traffic'. Quiet by silence by 11pm. Loved the idea. But the practise was awful, roomates and neighbours would party week by week not learning to keep quiet. But apparently I was the weird one getting up at 5 am to get myself ready for the day ahead. I would give cleaning 3 stars, but for how messy the students are, they need to be more strict. and nearly £5 to do laundry, I ended up using the shower. Great social spaces, there was a small garden, nice pool table at the top and plenty benches. But the areas were too often filled or closed off. Social experience 0/10,

Applied to James Bailey but was placed in Dev. Social experience was good, not as lively as other halls though. Was on the non-catered side and was definitely NOT worth the money. The kitchen was way too small for 6 people, bedroom sized vary quite a lot, was placed in a really small room and was paying the same as people with bedrooms 3 times the size. Really depends on the flat you are put in, most others were not as bad as ours and had a lot more space for the same/less people. Internet connection was poor in my room and no phone service ever. Cleaning was good, bins emptied daily by cleaners and bathroom cleaned once a week (mostly). Noise curfew was quite strict but if you close the windows you would probably be fine. LOTS of repairs needed throughout the year. Most repairs were handled quickly but at one point our bathroom was flooded and wasn't fixed for 6 days. Not as modern as other halls but location was nice, close to hyde park and Headingley.

Really enjoyed my year at Devonshire. I originally applied for James Baille and upon getting Dev and looking at the other reviews on here i was dreading it as it seems Dev is like a morgue. However everyone in my block (self catered) also applied James Baille and so were were very lively. The social scene was actually very good and most were very friendly so you could be going out every night if you could manage it. The major downside was the wardens who were very miserable and would try and shut down pres/party if they went on too late. However the location is very good and you can easily pop over to somewhere like JB if is happens. The other downsides were the wifi was pretty bad and it is quite expensive for what you get. Altogether i really enjoyed my year at Devonshire, i wouldn't recommend putting it as your first choice if your a sociable character but if you do happen to get it don't fret as the social is pretty decent and it isn't as bad as the other reviews made out.

Moved into Devonshire (catered) from another hall in Leeds. Overall it has made my experience in Leeds 1000000 times better! Found catered halls so sociable if you are willing to make the effort. Always someone to go out with and have not felt lonely at all. Completely different to my previous experience. Most people I met didn’t apply to Devonshire so are in the same boat. So close to James Baillee and close enough to Hyde park, Headingley and university. The rooms are so much bigger than most and feel so incredibly homely in comparison to all other halls. Love Devonshire! Don’t want to leave.

(Catered student): if you want to have a fairly social experience throughout 1st year I would not reccomend dev. There are some social events held by the hall at the start but these are less prevalent later. Food is okay for catered and theres a large variety each week. Maintenance is usually carried out quickly, after you have submitted a request. Overall, the social side is lacking here, though if you dont want that greatly it is a quiet hall and good to work in.

I was in the Orchards, but applied henry price. Everyone in our block didn't apply to dev so was good socially (basically everyone applied james baillie or henry price). Super annoying wardens, but honestly don't freak out if you get assigned here and you applied somewhere else, you will make friends, the buildings big enough to make friends and that's all that matters. I wouldn't recommend applying here though. JB is so close aswell which is good.

The flats are so unsociable compared to other residences, I only have 4 people in mine anyway and we never see each other so have no chance to talk to each other. if you want a good uni experience don't come here if you want all the double bed, en suite and food ( at absolutely awful times - breakfast stops being served at 9am ) and don't care about making mates then this place is fine

Do not stay here, totally ruined first year. Chose dev cos I really wanted to be catered but didn't like the sound of CM, if you're in that situation and you want somewhere fun, it's deffo worth just going for self catered and choosing James Bailey instead. Its the type of place where if you arrive and don't like your flat you should leave soon cos you won't get many opportunities to meet other people. In saying that if you didn't choose dev and end up with it, don't panic cos some people do genuinely really like it there. Ultimately its down to who's in your flat, but because there are lots of not fun people there it's a bit risky to choose it in the first place.

DO NOT CHOOSE TO STAY HERE!!! This place has pretty much ruined my first year at Uni. There is no social life here, you are treated like school children, and even though you pay a stupid amount of money the food and meal times are ridiculous. You are never allowed to take anything away with you from the refs to eat later.. if you do try to, you will be ridiculed by the patronising catering staff. The rooms are big but very old fashioned. The toilets are gross as is the tiny kitchen you have to share with pretty much the whole of Dev. The sport, drama, and music opportunities are pretty much non existent and you are sent to bed at 11pm or fined £100 for making noise after 11pm. If you want fun go to James Bailie and not Dev. The layout is bizarre and some students are far out and isolated. The formals are also pointless because you can never get on them and then if you do, once your at the formal you have to ask to go to the toilet like primary school kids. Hope this helps x

not the best not the worst, don't come here if you're really sociable and love going out... and if you stay in devonshire stay in the catered because self catered is really isolated doesn't really feel part of devonshire - not in main building. only good thing is the location and decent room size, hill is enough to put someone off this accommodation. taps are either stone cold or scorching hot, mold in my bathroom and had problems with ants. freezing rooms also. oh and the formals are really difficult to get

Had an amazing 1st year here and would highly recommeny choosing Dev! The food was good and there was plenty (sometimes seconds+fruit and stuff u could stash), wardens were a pain so we just went to James Baillie Hall after 11pm, so that was fine. Was superb having tennis and squash courts there, and the gym was decent. Rooms were nice with enough storage space, although this differed according to the block u were assigned to. Overall, had the best time here!!!

If you like going out Dev is not the one, you have to be silent by 11pm and the sub wardens/night watchmen are rude and patronising. Although there's loads of facilities, the rooms and kitchens themselves are old and outdated, which makes the price a bit expensive, especially as you can get nicer halls on campus for a cheaper price. There are no cleaners, the bins get taken out everyday but the rest of the cleaning is up to you. I met some great people at Dev but i wish I'd picked other Halls like James Bailie or Henry Price.

Amazing social atmosphere. Formal dinners and events give the hall a more collegiate feel and brings everyone together. Option of catered or self catered means there is a mix of people. The security staff can be difficult as the noise restriction at 23.00 is taken very seriously and pre drinks are often shut down (depending on the location of your flat I have found)

Absolutely fantastic. Expensive compared to other halls but you get so much more. There are events almost every week, and big events about once a month. Additionally the facilities are extensive: gym, tennis courts, dance room, squash courts, fives courts, billiard room, common room, bar, music room, orchards and gardens, etc. Great for people who really want to get involved - there is a choir, orchestra, jazz band, multiple sports teams and they do a musical and a play every year. Loved it!

Loved my time here, my friends made it and we had so much fun, really easy place to get to know people. If you need luxury with modern appliances and bedrooms then maybe not the best place, always ends up a bit dirty, put that's part of it I think. Would recommend to outgoing and independent freshers!

Definitely not worth the money as it is extremely expensive, especially for catered residents, where the food is awful and there is hardly any choice each night, the salad and fruit is not fresh and we are mainly served chips every single night. I have resorted to cooking my own meals and not going, although it is a complete waste of money.
