Don’t be put off by this place. It’s such great value for money and the people I’ve met this year are all incredible. The distance from uni can be a bit of a pain sometimes but Headingley is such a great student area. Sainsburys and boots right around the corner as well as all the great pubs and grub. Walk is 30 minutes to uni and about 15/20 mins on the bus depending on traffic but it’s honestly worth being in Headingley despite the trek. The downsize about Lupton is that the only communal area is the kitchen and it’s quite small but the corridor can seat 20 people and 3 tables if you ever wanted a big block dinner like we’ve done. Rooms are an ok size with the two back rooms the biggest and one having two windows. Site team are all really friendly and problems fixed usually the next day.

All the Answers You Need About Student Accommodation

What tenancy length do I need?

Some students choose to stay during the academic year, whilst others – particularly international students – require a tenancy that covers the entire year. You can also find student accommodation that is available for one or two terms, classified as a “short stay” on our search filters.

Should I stay in catered student accommodation?

This is totally up to you! Catered accommodation means you will be served meals at set times in a dining hall, and you’ll likely have access to fewer kitchen facilities than if you were to stay in self-catered accommodation.

What is a guarantor and do I need one?

A guarantor is a person who signs a contract to agree to pay your rent if you are unable to. Most university accommodation requires a guarantor, and this applies to both domestic and international students.

Will I need to pay a deposit on student accommodation?

Most likely, yes, you’ll need to pay a deposit. This will be refunded at the end of your stay as long as there is no damage to the room or property.

What bills will my rent include?

If you are staying in university-run accommodation or private halls, your rent should include any utilities such as electricity, gas, water, and internet. Students are not required to pay council tax, however you may need to fill in an exemption form so make sure you check with your local council.

What is purpose-built student accommodation?

Purpose-built student accommodation (PBSA) are residential buildings designed for students. They are often located close to campus, boast modern facilities, include all bills, and often have staff on site to assist residents.

Will my student accommodation be furnished?

Student accommodation is typically fully furnished. Your room should include at least a bed, clothes storage, desk and chair. You’ll likely need to bring things such as bedding and kitchen utensils, but we have a full list here of everything you’ll need.

I ended up at Lupton accommodation unexpectedly and was initially disappointed by the small room size and the age of the buildings, especially since there are no common rooms. However, I grew more comfortable over time. The Headingley area is nice, with a gym, Sainsbury’s, and plenty of fast food and dining options nearby. The bus station is just a five-minute walk away, which is convenient. The staff were always friendly and helpful, and I appreciated the weekly cleaning service that took care of the bathroom and trash. My room had some old furniture, but it was easy to keep warm in winter, though it got quite hot in summer on the upper floor. I enjoyed a decent green view from my window. Overall, Lupton has a quiet, social atmosphere and is a good option for first-year students looking to save money.

LIIIIIIIIIISTEN... After nearly a year in Lupton, we would not change it for the world. You can save a lot more amount of money compared to people from other accommodations who have the same facilities as Lupton. Obviously, there's no common room which is a bummer but Lupton is so sociable that it doesn't really matter. The people you'll meet here are exceptional, even if you're not friends with your flatmates you will definitely find friends in other flats and blocks. The bathroom gets cleaned every week and the kitchen bins are also changed a few times a week. Sharing the bathroom really isn't that bad if you and your flatmates all have understandings with one another. The only problems we've encountered was with the back gate at Lupton which is faulty and has led to people being followed in and mugged by people not at Lupton. Security are safe though other than that. If you've been given Lupton- don't stress. You're about to have THE time of your life.

There are pros and cons to the place. It’s really social and everyone is nice, which is great. Only downside is if you want a good nights sleep you’re probably not getting it, although tbh other blocks don’t seem to as loud as mine. The local pubs are really good. Buses into town/to uni are very frequent, cheap and run quite late. Headingley is lovely. The only thing that lets the area down is it doesn’t feel safe. We’ve had multiple muggings both on the street outside lupton and inside the gates where people have been followed in. There’s even been 2 people trying to get into block A claiming they lived there, but luckily they didn’t get in. I don’t feel like the uni or the warden have done enough about it all. Honestly, you probably haven’t applied to lupton and if you’ve been given it don’t worry, you’ll most likely have a good time despite it’s downsides. Just always keep your room locked and always use the main gate as it seems to be safer.

Before coming to Lupton, I read good reviews and wasn't too upset when I was placed in Lupton. When freshers week started decorated my room to my liking and spent most of my money for freshers week in Wilkos for extra storage. Only a month later, I had mould and mildew in my room and had to contact maintenance to clean it up. They were timely and cleared it up, however, it had reached my belongings and I had to bin the storage stool I had bought in freshers as well as some of my other belongings. For the second time now (beginning of March), I have had to contact maintenance about mould and mildew, and once again I am having to bin some of my belongings. Maintenance has told me that it may be an issue with the outside wall and has contacted the contractor to take a look. Overall, I like the atmosphere of Lupton, it is very sociable and has good wifi, but, I would like to make people aware of issues like these because it has really affected my time here.

I have been at lupton for a whole semester now. After applying to and being rejected from Montague Burton I was initially disappointed with getting into Lupton. I however now feel that Lupton was the right accommodation for me as the extra £20 a week compared to Montague Burton makes such a difference to be limited student finance grant. I would say that the £99 is just right for the accommodation because the contents inside is just what you need but it’s also further from the uni and there is no common room. I don’t think that the common room has prevented socialising however as people just have flat parties. There are about 5 different buses that you can take to the uni and city centre which are very regular ranging from 15-20 minutes long so I often find it easier and cheaper to walk as the walk is 30-35 minutes and I benefit from the exercise that way. Walking down with someone else is great to make friends also! No wifi issues and I’m online a lot for lectures

For 99 quid a week really can't go wrong. I, like most other people who end up here, didn't apply for here but I want to assure you it's fine if you have been put in lupton. Only been here a month and a half and already feels like home. Very sociable and defo call for your neighbours etc and branch out. Only bad thing is small kitchen but you can still make it work. A bike is a shout then it is only 10 mins into uni but there are frequent £1.20 buses into town (£1 after 7pm) so it really isn't an issue. Headingley is nice, the pubs are good craic. Really recommend, your experience is what you make of it but lupton is defo known as one of the most sociable and just has a really good vibe about it

I lived here 2019/20 (N block) and on the whole, it was great. No one really applies for Lupton but few leave here wishing they had lived anywhere else. The main two things going for it are the fact it's cheap and it's in a handy location. Being in Headingley means there are a plethora of bars and restaurants on your doorstep, as well as a decently-sized Sainsburys and Aldi just 10-15 min away in Meanwood. Headingley does mean that you're a fair way from uni and there are lots of Beckett students around but it's busy and lively. The fact the accommodation is cheap allows you to enjoy all Leeds and Headingley have to offer without being too stressed about budgeting. Unfortunately, the social spaces are limited when the weather is grim but in sunny times the BBQ space and grass are great. Kitchens aren't massive but plenty can fit in for social occasions. In short- Pros: Cheap Good location Lovely Grounds Management is great Cons: Lack of inside social space A bit basic Far from uni

COME TO LUPTON. Yes it's a bit further away from uni but don't let that discourage you because the people you meet are amazing. It was not my first choice (applied for James bailee like lots of others) but I am so so glad I was put in lupton. It's the only accommodation with proper grounds so in the winter we had snowball fights and bbqs in the summer which was perfect. Also quite druggie but don't worry if that's not your thing. The good thing about lupton is that the people you meet (no matter what background) are really down to earth and genuine because it is the cheapest accommodation - and I honestly made some of my best friend in that kitchen. Super convenient as it's near Sainsbury's, greggs and the bus stop (buses come every five minutes so really easy to get to uni quick, but the walk is really nice aswell). It might not be the prettiest accommodation but you grow to love it and will soon call it home- I was very sad to leave.

had a really lovely year at this accom! met some incredible people from all over the globe. Some people complain about the kitchen size but personally, I think its fine for cooking simple dishes eg. me and my good friend made several batches of reasonably spicy dahl - sweet pot and spinach; don't forget the chutters! also some people hate shared bathrooms - for me, i don't mind it; its a nice communal atmosphere when you can brush your teeth amongst your pals before those dreaded 9ams! we've had some fab evenings out on the luscious well kept lupton commons - tanning and chilling and revision if you're lucky!

Generally the people who end up at Lupton are either aiming to save money or have been lumped here due to over-subscribed accommodations like Cityside and CentralVilliage (Most likely the later). However, this does not mean Lupton is an awful place my any means. After applying to Leodis and being allocated the exact opposite i honestly wouldn't chose another accommodation. So heres a basic breakdown of why Lupton is THE best even if you think its gonna be disappointing; Pros = Sainsburys 1 min away/ Aldi 15 mins away /£1 Bus to uni and town every 10mins /amazing student pubs /cleaners that take the bins out, clean the bathroom and occasionally deep clean/ THE MOST SOCIAL HALLS / huge grass areas for summer / Relaxed wardens for parties and noise / decent size rooms (although rooms 1 and 2 are a tad smaller) Cons = Smaller kitchen with no sofas / shared bathroom (not ever a problem) / Ugly buildings / single beds Otherwise its worth sacrificing a double bed for the rest!

Although one of the most basic accommodations, Lupton is definitely one of (if not the best) accommodations you could stay in during your first year. Lupton is incredibly social and lively throughout the weekdays and the weekends despite the lack of communal areas. The kitchens are basic but have everything you need and plenty of storage space. The bathroom again is basic but has amazing water pressure and there is always hot water no matter how many people have showered before you. The kitchen bins get taken out every day for you in the morning by the cleaners (apart from the weekends) and the whole bathroom gets cleaned once every week. If anything is broken or needs fixing, you report it at the front desk and without fail gets fixed within a maximum of 2-3 days. The wifi connection is great in some flats and worse in others, but it's still never a real problem. Lupton is so social it's the BEST accommodation to meet as many people as possible and have an amazing first year!

Lupton is the cheapest residences at the Uni and pretty much lives up to its cheap price tag. Although some may deem is worth it to have extra money. There is very limited facilities here, with tiny kitchens which are awful for socializing/relaxing and there is no other space which is a real shame despite this most people here are very nice. The rooms are an average kind of size and what you would expect from halls (nothing amazing). Having a shared bathroom is not as bad as it seems, the bigger problem is that it doesn't stay clean long... The distance from the Uni (35 min walk) and city is quite annoying and can make going out more effort despite this the walk can be quite nice and regular buses do run (£1 to uni) which is helpful but would rather be a bit closer. Although, Headingley is a proper nice area and has lots of shops/food places which is helpful. Overall, Lupton isn't the worse place to live on earth, but I'd still try to avoid it if possible although some do love it.

Awful. Security is here every other night because people are 'dealing' or doing drugs. Social experience is rubbish, can barely function with 5 people in the kitchen so bad for pre's. Carrying on from that, there's barely anyone here you'd want to make friends with anyway. University is too far away which ends up costing a lot on the bus. Closest shopping is Sainsbury's and that's too expensive. Overall, Lupton is a s*******.

DO NOT LIVE HERE. Lupton is the worst accommodation I have ever seen in my life and it is surprising that a top University like Leeds considers this accomodation sufficient. Freshers week was good because everyone is really sociable and lively but when you want a quiet night in it is impossible because the walls are basically made out of paper and you can hear everything. There is no privacy because the flat in general is so small and you also have to share a bathroom. The shower is disgusting and I come out of the shower feeling dirtier than when I went in. Its a 40 minute walk to uni which seems okay for the first few days but then it becomes such a pain. There is no common room or social space anywhere in the entire accomodation so you have to live, eat and socialise in a tiny kitchen with a table that takes up the entire room with 3 huge bins in the corner. I would rather pay the extra money and not be able to eat than live here.

Had the best 1st year at Lupton! When I first got allocated there I'll admit I was disappointed as it just seemed so far away and not as nice as some of the other accommodations but it is such a sociable halls of residence and has everything you need! If I could do it again I would 100% choose there over other residences because it is clean, cheap (very very cheap) and lots of grass areas and bench areas for BBQs etc and is right in the heart of the vibrant student area of Headingley which is just full of student pubs!

Great value for money - the rooms are decent and have good storage space. Being in Headingley is great - there is a Wilko, Sainsbury's, Superdrug and loads of pubs/food stores literally down the road from Lupton as well as an Aldi pretty nearby. The walk to uni really isn't that bad and the bus services come regularly as you are in the centre of Headingley. I personally did not have a great social experience as the lack of common room space made it hard to meet people as well as the high drug use that doesn't mix well with an anxious person. As well as issues with a problem/drug addicted flat mate that was dealt with slowly & poorly by the hall management, making the experience at times unbearable. However, I am glad I stayed at Lupton as the £90 per week rent made budgeting much more easier!

Lupton wasn't my first choice when i was moving into halls. However, now i wouldn't change a thing about where i am. The halls are basic, but lack nothing (other than maybe a communal area ie sofas etc but this isn't an issue as people tend to gather in the kitchen/bedrooms). The most important part of Lupton is that it is the cheapest accommodation, and if you are on the minimum student finance this is the only accommodation that you can afford without seeking money elsewhere. As a student money is such a big factor in your life which i didnt realise until i got to Uni. Speaking to people in different halls they sometimes wish they were in cheaper accommodation. People tend to be put off Lupton because of the shared bathroom but i will stress that i've never had an issue with sharing with 4 other people. Everyone creates their own routine and it works fine. The kitchen has plenty of space, rooms are a little cosy, but the location (Headingley) is full of things to do.

Value for money - £90 a week is great compared to all the other halls, more money for other stuff like food etc.. Location - Whilst it is away from uni (get a bus pass), the location is actually great - loads of restaurants, pubs and shops next to you (nandos 10 second walk) Only annoying thing is that you have to chill in each others bedrooms as oppose to in a dedicated space - but its chill and you become more closer quicker (leave doors open) Wifi very fast Generally very friendly Initially disappointed to get Lupton after getting accommodation offer, however looking back its been great!

This place is essentially a massive drug den. Hard drugs going on regularly (I know of coke and ketamine both being dealt and used within my block when I was there. Thank god I moved.), hall staff and security aware of the drug problems but unwilling or unable to do anything about it given how widespread the problem is. Located a long way out, poorly maintained accommodation and just genuinely a bit of a dump.

It's the cheapest halls but that doesn't mean worst at all. It's well placed next to all the shops and pubs and restaurants you could need. The halls are set in a lovely open space and the layout (maybe 9 different blocks, each block with 3 floors and 3 flats on each) make it great for socials and pres. A 25 minute walk away from uni or a 10 minute bus ride, but rent plus a bus pass still makes it the best value.

Basic but brilliant. Incredible social atmosphere, and always lively (especially at night) no matter what day of the week. Doesn't have the glamour of other halls but the social aspect more than makes up for it. In Headingly which is a great area and if you can't be bothered to walk to Uni (20-30 mins) you can guarantee a place on a bus whilst other accommodations further toward the uni are unlikely to say the same as Lupton residents fill them up. Only criticism is that the lack of a common social space means that Lupton can be very quiet during the day which isn't a bad thing during the week but can be quite boring on weekends, however if you make an effort its easy enough to just knock on someone else's flat and chill with them. Fire alarms can be a pain in the backside as well. As its one of the cheapest accommodations, people have more money to do stuff and go out and have fun.

best accomadation for UoL students, very sociable and perfect location within headingley(although 30 min walk to uni). Not the fanciest accomadation but the money you save is definitely worth it for the social life!

Looks like a housing estate with a gate. The sizes of the rooms are totally unequal despite the fact we're paying the same amount. The quality of the finish in the flats also isn't worth the amount of money. However the social side is really good.

Lupton is so much fun and generally full of really down to earth people, it's nothing special but has everything you need and is definitely really good value for money, the staff are very prompt at fixing problems you may have and is just a really great laugh

People make such a fuss when they get Lupton but if you're not a total snob/ high maintenance then you'll have a great time. 5 to a flat 3 girls 2 boys and my block is very social, we go out together all the time and go to other blocks for parties. The management can be strict on damage but it's old anyway so they can't really charge you. Cleaners are so friendly: empty bins every weekday and clean bathroom once a week. Headingley is a great area and the 25 min walk to uni is easy to get used to or buses come every 5 mins.

Fire alarms went off all the time! At least once a week, usually about 3-6 times a night/day. Management did nothing about the fire alarms until they were being sent emails from loads of people. Office opening hours are ridiculous - no post delivered on Saturday (more than once I've had to arrange for something to be re-delivered). Headingley is too far away from everything. The only 'social space' is your kitchen with its uncomfortable chairs.

Quite a distance from uni but Headingley is very self-sufficient with a Sainsbury's, Wilko's, Superdrug and numerous banks and pubs within a 5 minute walk. Way better than I expected before I came.

Although it's not that close to the University campus, it's right in Headingley where there's pubs, restaurants and loads of shops including a Sainsbury's. The halls itself are big so plenty of chance to meet people, and the rooms are good, and it's really not that bad sharing a bathroom with four other people.

Faulty firearm system meaning random drills up to 3 times a night at 3-5am. Faulty water system which spontaneously leaves you without hot water. Great nearby shops etc

Often breakages including broken heating and issues with hot water which can be a nightmare. However, it is the friendliest accommodation with the best atmosphere and overall, a good place to stay
