Some students choose to stay during the academic year, whilst others – particularly international students – require a tenancy that covers the entire year. You can also find student accommodation that is available for one or two terms, classified as a “short stay” on our search filters.
This is totally up to you! Catered accommodation means you will be served meals at set times in a dining hall, and you’ll likely have access to fewer kitchen facilities than if you were to stay in self-catered accommodation.
A guarantor is a person who signs a contract to agree to pay your rent if you are unable to. Most university accommodation requires a guarantor, and this applies to both domestic and international students.
Most likely, yes, you’ll need to pay a deposit. This will be refunded at the end of your stay as long as there is no damage to the room or property.
If you are staying in university-run accommodation or private halls, your rent should include any utilities such as electricity, gas, water, and internet. Students are not required to pay council tax, however you may need to fill in an exemption form so make sure you check with your local council.
Purpose-built student accommodation (PBSA) are residential buildings designed for students. They are often located close to campus, boast modern facilities, include all bills, and often have staff on site to assist residents.
Student accommodation is typically fully furnished. Your room should include at least a bed, clothes storage, desk and chair. You’ll likely need to bring things such as bedding and kitchen utensils, but we have a full list here of everything you’ll need.
Cofton Hall is nice accommodation with en-suite facilities and is on campus, this making it a stone throw away from lectures and the university bar (albeit not the best bar). However, considering the location of it in Birmingham (not near city centre and not a lot around the ‘rough’ area), it is becoming increasingly expensive- rising to £150 per week for the ‘deluxe’ accommodation in 2023-2024!!!! However, there are cheaper options available. Accommodation is consistently monitored and issues are addressed well by 24/7/365 security.
Wouldn’t recommend to anyone who wants to live in halls
Living in cofton halls is brilliant especially as it is on campus so having that extra 10mins sleep before a lecture really helps. However, due to it being abit outside of Birmingham it makes socialising a little bit more difficult. The area that it is in doesn’t have any social spots for people living at uni to get involved in, we always have to travel by bus or Uber and with the cost of living it can be expensive.

I do really like Cofton, and the housekeeping staff we see around the buildings are amazing and kind. The biggest issue is, like most universities, they charge for 44 weeks, despite the fact that my course ends 110 days before this! It’s a large cost but not Newman’s fault. Great, spacious, clean, en-suite rooms.
The accomodation is perfect for the money, clean and welcoming bedrooms with a kitchen and living space that allows for positive social interactions. It also has designated quiet floors and flats for those wanting single sex rooms. the cleaners are regular and keep the bins empty in the kitchen. The staff are superb at their job.
Halls get cleaned regularly, very friendly people both living in there and staff
