All the Answers You Need About Student Accommodation
What tenancy length do I need?
Some students choose to stay during the academic year, whilst others – particularly international students – require a tenancy that covers the entire year. You can also find student accommodation that is available for one or two terms, classified as a “short stay” on our search filters.
Should I stay in catered student accommodation?
This is totally up to you! Catered accommodation means you will be served meals at set times in a dining hall, and you’ll likely have access to fewer kitchen facilities than if you were to stay in self-catered accommodation.
What is a guarantor and do I need one?
A guarantor is a person who signs a contract to agree to pay your rent if you are unable to. Most university accommodation requires a guarantor, and this applies to both domestic and international students.
Will I need to pay a deposit on student accommodation?
Most likely, yes, you’ll need to pay a deposit. This will be refunded at the end of your stay as long as there is no damage to the room or property.
What bills will my rent include?
If you are staying in university-run accommodation or private halls, your rent should include any utilities such as electricity, gas, water, and internet. Students are not required to pay council tax, however you may need to fill in an exemption form so make sure you check with your local council.
What is purpose-built student accommodation?
Purpose-built student accommodation (PBSA) are residential buildings designed for students. They are often located close to campus, boast modern facilities, include all bills, and often have staff on site to assist residents.
Will my student accommodation be furnished?
Student accommodation is typically fully furnished. Your room should include at least a bed, clothes storage, desk and chair. You’ll likely need to bring things such as bedding and kitchen utensils, but we have a full list here of everything you’ll need.

It's a nice cozy place to live.
Amazing place to live at and I go to an amazing university also
Love the accomodation, close to most areas
One of the best accomodation.I have been living here for more than 5 months the ambience is great
Best place for the students to live in the UK. Calthorpe has the best environment for an international student. The rooms are nice and the flats are big. There's also a study room, gaming room and movie room which adds to the entertainment one can enjoy. I would highly recommend Calthorpe Court for students who are completely to UK for education.
Sometimes the wifi cuts out and the free stuff and events at reception are nice tho
This is a good place to stay for students and it's definitely value for the money you pay for.
great place to be, feels like home
It’s good and nice and nice jsjsnssn
Overall very nice accomodation for Birmingham
Pretty good. Value for money, of course.
Nice remote location, giving the OG Birmingham vibes.
Nice place. I would love to stay here.
Good location, staff service and value for money
Was blown away by the friendliness and cooperativeness of the staff, especially George at Calthorpe Court, who is the best maintenance tech I've ever seen. I had a leaking problem, and in less than 24 hours George had arrived at my flat, sparing no extra effort in making sure the issue was solved. Extremely friendly, hard-working, and knowledgeable.
It’s been a pleasant experience.
Had a great safe stay here and the Reception people are extremely lovely
It's an amazing place to live. Totally feels like home away from home.
Good place to stay for students
It's really good. A best place to stay .
Good experience for my stay which is so comfortable to reach uni
The accomodation is very well facilitated and clean
I think it is an affordable accommodation with good facilities such as a study room, which is good especially when you don’t want to go to the library but still want to leave your room, and the room space is great.
A really good experience so far at Calthrope . Looking forward to have a great time in the remaining days of my stay
It’s really a comfortable accommodation compared to other student accommodations.
Amazing environment. And organise even
Calthorpe court is a great accomodation with affordable price
It's a peaceful stay at calthorpe and enjoy staying here
Management is good. But wifi is a problem sometimes. Overall it is ok
The common areas are really modern and good
This accommodation is peaceful and secure place for students with cool events where people can socialise. Overall it’s a great place to live
Worth it for the price, I would say even better than other accommodations nearby.
Great place to live. The staff are friendly, and the property is affordable and well maintained. Give it a try...You'll love it.
Calthorpe court is a best place for students who are studying in uob aston bcu and other universities in Birmingham. Well maintained and supportive office team with all facilities for students including social space and bike storage space.
All though it is good but some of the things are not good , like sports room every thing is broken, apart from that no social activities held by the authorities. one of my friends live in Liverpool at United students accommodation, they are having soo many social events and they have so many amenities
it's been like almost 3 months and I like this place as it's convenient and does tick all the basic requirements.
Calthorpe Court is situated on one of the most safest and prime neighbourhood, whether it is early in the morning, or late at night it is one of the most safest neighbourhoods to be out in, with a Morrisons and Aldi conveniently close for all your daily necessities. There is plenty of different bus stops within a 10 min walk, to get you to all parts of the city, not to leave out, how reasonable the prices are!
It is located at the best Birmingham street. It is very convenient and safe for students ;particularly girls students. The only problem is laundry.it is too extensive
Overall , excellent accomodation worth the price , not too far from city center Nice ensuite rooms , i ‘ ve really enjoy it
Overall a good student accommodation.. Worth the money✌
Wonderful Accommodation.15 mints to the University of Birmingham by Bicycle.24 hours on-site security.Overall,Calthorpe Court is really lovely place to live for Student Life.Highly Recommended.
Well, it’s a quite and peaceful place. Ideal for a student. Everything is easily accessible, from supermarkets to bus stops.
Overall Experience is very good
Great accommodation for the price, also at a convenient location. Aldi which is the best and cheapest supermarket is at a 7 minute walk. Easy travel to the University as well as the city centre because bus stops are near. Feels safe and secure. Hygiene standards could be better with regular cleaning. Apart from that, everything seems worth the money for this accommodation. UOB students should definitely go for this
Great accommodation, exactly what I'm looking for, somewhere quiet to write my dissertation! Aldi is within a 10-minute walk and small Morrisons within 2 minutes, fish and chips and a basic pub just across the road too. Near Cannon Hill Park, Edgbaston cricket. Loads of car parking and two safe bike sheds. Laundry is expensive but all bills (like heating and electricity!) included has been a lifesaver this year.
Convenient spot to stay. Be prepared to pay pay pay for laundry.
It’s silent and I love the place! 😍
Worth the price! Better to live in here rather than staying at some other student private accomodations by sharing the whole house, Because I've seen some of my friends suffered in this case and ended up at Calthorpe Court. I've felt that if it is quite cheaper than the original, it will be the absolute student friendly property to pay the rent through installment plan. Good, Friendly, Safe and secure all the time. Overall review = Excellent accomodation, I've had an great experience!
It's perfect for single occupancy. Completely worth the price!
Good location, safe, friendly staff
good accommodation for the price
I feel so peaceful and relaxed when I m in room, and getting good opportunity to make new circle of friends...and the service provide by calthropode (Homes for student ) is very friendly, excellent.
Good ambience, value for money and best suitable for overseas students.
My experience at Calthorpe Court has been wonderful, the staff are extremely caring. In certain situations where I have feared getting in trouble the staff have supported and given loads of encouragement. One experience I’ve had this year is losing my fob, I thought I’d be expected to pay straight away to get a new one, to my delight the staff would open the gates for me at all times and said that I could pay for a new fob once I had enough funds to pay for one. The general atmosphere at Calthorpe is amazing and I would definitely recommend it to others.
The best accomodation for students in the main location at Edgbaston.
Just amazing. Super clean and homely and big kitchen and bathrooms,The network speed is very fast.
Nice place to live at! The place inside is very calm and serene. Rooms are a bit small but still good for a person. Love the storage spaces as there are enough shelves and drawers (even in the cupboard as well) to store everything.
I had an amazing experience with the accomodation. Compact and ensuite rooms are perfect and spacious enough for single occupancy. It's near to city centre and has Aldi jus 400m away
It was an amazing choice to choose this accommodation. The place is so peaceful and have every facilities nearby.
It was ideal as it was ensuite with a spacious kitchen. What it lacks in distance to campus, it makes up for proximity to city centre. And there is a free shuttle bus service
