All the Answers You Need About Student Accommodation
What tenancy length do I need?
Some students choose to stay during the academic year, whilst others – particularly international students – require a tenancy that covers the entire year. You can also find student accommodation that is available for one or two terms, classified as a “short stay” on our search filters.
Should I stay in catered student accommodation?
This is totally up to you! Catered accommodation means you will be served meals at set times in a dining hall, and you’ll likely have access to fewer kitchen facilities than if you were to stay in self-catered accommodation.
What is a guarantor and do I need one?
A guarantor is a person who signs a contract to agree to pay your rent if you are unable to. Most university accommodation requires a guarantor, and this applies to both domestic and international students.
Will I need to pay a deposit on student accommodation?
Most likely, yes, you’ll need to pay a deposit. This will be refunded at the end of your stay as long as there is no damage to the room or property.
What bills will my rent include?
If you are staying in university-run accommodation or private halls, your rent should include any utilities such as electricity, gas, water, and internet. Students are not required to pay council tax, however you may need to fill in an exemption form so make sure you check with your local council.
What is purpose-built student accommodation?
Purpose-built student accommodation (PBSA) are residential buildings designed for students. They are often located close to campus, boast modern facilities, include all bills, and often have staff on site to assist residents.
Will my student accommodation be furnished?
Student accommodation is typically fully furnished. Your room should include at least a bed, clothes storage, desk and chair. You’ll likely need to bring things such as bedding and kitchen utensils, but we have a full list here of everything you’ll need.

lovely room and lovely place but seriously lacks social aspect. no communal living space for flat only kitchen and small table.
The location is excellent, bear by a park and the environment is very quiet. The cost is fair, a little bit expensive , but still acceptable. One more thing, the en-suite room is a little bit small.
Reception staff are really lovely but have found that security are not very helpful, complained multiple times about noise and practically no difference was made any of the times.
The location is perfect, there are many bus stops nearby as well as the Piccadilly line. The staff is lovely and always there to help. The issues that I've encountered are towards the room. The room was not clean, I had to change the mattress as there were huge stains on them. Luckily, the staff was quick to respond, but given the price of the room I would expect the room to be better.
The staff are all lovely as are the facilities (if you’ve got one of the new kitchens I didn’t.) Chapter Islington just isn’t the accommodation for a “freshers” experience, most residents aren’t first years so not really social. If you want a proper first year experience go to your university’s accommodation, even if it’s not as good location as Chaper Islington. Also the doors get slammed v loud. I’ve loved living here but often I go to friends accommodations and wish I had chosen there.
All staff in Chapter Islington are very kind and they are all ready to help in anytime.
Thank you for taking the time to review us and for your lovely feedback for our Islington team - we'll make sure we pass that on :)
I have to say I love all memebers in Chapter Islington. Especially I want to give my thank to Samiha! She helped me a lot and she is a very nice and kind person! She kindly organized wonderful activities and let us notified. Thank you, Samiha!
Thank you for taking the time to review us and it's great to hear that you're enjoying your time with us. We'll defnitely pass that feedback on to Samiha :)
If you’re going to staying in quarantine for 10 days, believe me, this is not the best choice. Ignore all the info on their website. After 2 days no one will remember you and help you. And it is not a clean place. I lived in there for 4-5 months and no one cleaned the corridor. The only good thing is the internet which provides high speed and some of the staff was members were good.
Hello, thank you for your review, we're sorry to hear that you haven't had a good experience. We understand that self-quarantine is a very challenging time and so have put a number of measures in place to help support our residents who are going through this process. We'd like to investigate this further with the team, could I ask you to supply us with more information by emailing us at hello@chapter-living.com? Thank you.
I live in Chapter Islington for almost a year, this is a perfect place that I recommend those who will study in London live here! The traffic is so convenient, you can take buses or underground by walking only one to four minutes. There are four stores near by, so it’s easy for you to buy stuff. Every month, the reception hosts different activities like welcome party, hotpot party, Holloway party and so on to let us enjoy the time here and help us make friends! Every time when you face trouble in this accommodation, the staff always try their best to help you and ensure your feeling living here. Chapter Islington has a gym, a theater and study room. It is really a great place for you to enjoy your time in London!
Thank you for taking the time to leave us a review. We're very happy to hear how much you've enjoyed your stay with us and it's great to see how much you've enjoyed the location, facilities and events.
I regret booking this place. The hall is overpriced but it's fine and tbh I didn't have issues with the place itself. The problems started with this pandemic when I left Chapter in March. Tried to get out of the contract because I went back to my country. This company is charging me more than one month of rent as an "additional fee" just to terminate the contract. Taking into account that we all had to stop our studies (which we paid a considerable amount for) because of this situation, are anxiously quarantining and are waiting for an economic crisis to come, the company's action is no different from that of Domino's or Starbucks. Taking advantage of this situation is a selfish act. I wish they were more empathetic with people and their situations.
Covid-19: No. They trashed all opinions I had of them.
Hello, thank you for taking the time to leave a review. We’re very sorry to hear that you have been left dissatisfied with the tenancy agreement options we provided in light of the pandemic. The situation is unprecedented, and our residents all have a unique set of circumstances. We have tried to strike the right balance by providing three solutions that benefit the majority of residents in line with the lockdown measures, guidance from prominent industry bodies and the student accommodation sector’s response. We would be happy to talk this through with you in more detail. If that would be helpful, please could you email us at feedback@chapter-living.com with your contact information?
If I could go back in time I would have never booked Chapter Islington. The hallways constantly smell, the windows are never cleaned. Maintenance is minimal. Although the management prides to be “supportive”, none of our concerns are being addressed. They stopped responding to my emails after I booked. Laundry is a disaster and extremely disgusting. Water started leaking in my friend's room so he had to find another place to stay mid-semester. In general, this is the worst student accommodation experience I have ever had... I would strongly urge you to find a different place to stay. You could find much cheaper and much better places to stay.
Hello, thank you for taking the time to leave a review and we’re very sorry to see it’s only 2 stars. We take your comments very seriously and would like to look into this further. Please could you email feedback@chapter-living.com with some more information so we can raise this with the Chapter Islington management team?
Amazing staff and good customer
Very good staff and amazing customer service
Absolute s*** Pathetic management No social scene No water and heating
awesome location, very kind staff
Horrible experience! Never rent at this place! Management is useless, its dirty and overpriced for what you get. Do not go here.
I cannot at all recommend this student accommodation. When I first booked it I thought it looked quite nice, modern and pleasing. As I am highly allergic to domestic dust, for me it was of the highest importance to have a floor that is very easy to clean i.e. to have one of the rooms with laminate (so a PLUS room). When I booked my room online I am pretty sure I booked a PLUS room. To be 100% sure, I even wrote an email to the Chapter Team to ask about it again and they confirmed that indeed I booked a PLUS one. When I arrived things started to get worse and worse. My room was not a PLUS room but rather an old one with a carpet that had terrible stains on it. When I asked for a new one (i.e. the one I actually booked in the first place), they said I never asked for a PLUS one and that even though their colleague confirmed my room I have to stay in the dirty one. Things were getting worse over time. I asked for my room to be cleaned as it really was in a terrible condition. No one ever
Terrible experience! I booked a room in Chapter Islington in order to stay in August. I made all the payments and I signed the Terms and Conditions; I also sent an e-mail more than 24 hours before my arrival notifying the exact time I will be there for the check-in. When I arrived no one had prepared my room. I had no room key until the following day and I did not had any bed linen nor toilet papel, towels or facilities at all. I had to sleep on the mattress with no blankets, sheets or anything on and the room, not even similar to the pictures on internet, was completely empty and cold. It was not until the next day when I was warned that the bed clothing was not supposed to be included with the room, this information was not given to me at any time during the process of booking the room and it was never mentioned on the Terms and Conditions document I signed. After this I sent a Formal Claim and I had to wait nearly a month to receive the answer that they couldn't do anything for me.
You wont get any sleep because of the constant noise level, and the management won’t do anything about it even upon numerous request. They dont care about your health or living standards. You won’t be able to concentrate in lesson due to poor sleep.
Wifi, hot water, and laundry machines stop working when you need them most. Staffs tried but they cannot possibly fix anything quickly. Prepare to take cold showers for a week, while the washing machines die every month. The terrible facilities make your uni life harder and can provide good preparation to a killing mood.
