All the Answers You Need About Student Accommodation
What tenancy length do I need?
Some students choose to stay during the academic year, whilst others – particularly international students – require a tenancy that covers the entire year. You can also find student accommodation that is available for one or two terms, classified as a “short stay” on our search filters.
Should I stay in catered student accommodation?
This is totally up to you! Catered accommodation means you will be served meals at set times in a dining hall, and you’ll likely have access to fewer kitchen facilities than if you were to stay in self-catered accommodation.
What is a guarantor and do I need one?
A guarantor is a person who signs a contract to agree to pay your rent if you are unable to. Most university accommodation requires a guarantor, and this applies to both domestic and international students.
Will I need to pay a deposit on student accommodation?
Most likely, yes, you’ll need to pay a deposit. This will be refunded at the end of your stay as long as there is no damage to the room or property.
What bills will my rent include?
If you are staying in university-run accommodation or private halls, your rent should include any utilities such as electricity, gas, water, and internet. Students are not required to pay council tax, however you may need to fill in an exemption form so make sure you check with your local council.
What is purpose-built student accommodation?
Purpose-built student accommodation (PBSA) are residential buildings designed for students. They are often located close to campus, boast modern facilities, include all bills, and often have staff on site to assist residents.
Will my student accommodation be furnished?
Student accommodation is typically fully furnished. Your room should include at least a bed, clothes storage, desk and chair. You’ll likely need to bring things such as bedding and kitchen utensils, but we have a full list here of everything you’ll need.

Very nice area with a nice walk to the university. The rooms are a nice size and very cosy. The kitchen is spacious and sociable however the sofas are uncomfortable which limits the amount of time we spend in there. I like the residence services activities as there is a good range and they are free. I have done things like yoga and paint classes. The gym is good and very close by and the pool/table tennis tables in the ridge are a good social activity.
Hello and thank you for your review of Ravenstones, we really appreciate it. I am sorry to hear the sofa was uncomfortable. Any issues that require maintenance can be reported and the Customer Services team will be happy to assist acs-customerservices@sheffield.ac.uk Residence Life organise loads of events over the year and many of these are free to attend. The fitness suite at The Ridge is for all students to use if they wish and is included in the rent. Best wishes, Sharon
Overall, a good place to live, but compared to other flats in Ranmoor, the kitchen and living space is a bit old and outdated. The distance to the main campus is quite far as well, especially since Ravenstones Apartments are some of the furthest buildings in Ranmoor in relation to the main campus.
Hello and thank you for your review on our Ravenstones accommodation. I am sorry you feel the communal areas are a little dated. We aim to have the accommodation at a high standard. If there any issues the Customer Services team are happy to help acs-customerservices@sheffield.ac.uk It's about a 25 minute walk to the main campus. It's an easy walk along well lit main roads. This is a short commute compared to many other universities. The 120 bus stops just along the road so this is an option if you don't fancy walking (or if the weather is bad !). Best wishes, Sharon
It's a little far to walk to Uni (about 30 minutes), but there is morrisons/sainsbury's/tesco on the way so its ok. The wifi has a little slow a once, but not to the point that it is an issue.
Hello and thank you for your review of Ravenstones flats, we really appreciate it. The walk to main campus is a maximum of 30 minutes walk. It's an easy walk along well lit, main roads. There is a cycle path and secure storage across the university. This distance is pretty short in comparision with many universities and saves you money on transport costs. The shopping area of Broomhill is only 10 minutes walk away. You will find Morrisons, Sainsburys and Tesco here along with loads of cafes, bars, restaurants and charity shops. There are 2 chemists, a post office and hairdressers/barbers so it's very useful. There is also a village store on campus if you forget anything. Best wishes, Sharon
Bad wifi in some areas and the wet room en suite requires maintenance at times. Good community of people. The launderette has 20 free washes and you can see when they’re available online. Closer to the main road than endcliffe and closer to the bus stop.
Hello and thank you for your review of our Ravenstones accommodation, we really appreciate it. If there are any maintenance issues the Customer Services team are always happy to help acs-customerservices@sheffield.ac.uk There is always something happening across the site. Residence Life hold loads of events and many of these are free to attend. The Edge bar has loads of themed nights too. If it's raining you can take the 120 bus. It runs through the Broomhill shopping centre, to the bus and train stations and beyond. Best wishes, Sharon
Ravenstones is slightly outside of the main areas and is on the fringes of the student village. However it is in a good location if you want a quieter atmosphere and area.
Hello and thank you for your review of Ravenstones accommodation, we are very grateful. This block is on the outskirts of the Ranmoor side of the Ranmoor/Endcliffe site. It's close to The Ridge social area and the fitness suite. If the weather is rubbish or you are tired, you can get the 120 bus. This runs through the Broomhill shopping center, down to main campus, to the bus and train stations and beyond and buses run every few minutes from 6am to midnight Monday to Friday with a reduced service at the weekend. Best wishes, Sharon

Good area to live, quiet which means you won’t get woken up by people coming back from a night out!
Hello and thank you for your review of Ravenstones, we really appreciate it. This a a great location and although it's at the edge of the Ranmoor side of the Ranmoor/Endcliffe site it's close to The Ridge social area and fitness suite. A bonus of being here is that the 120 bus stop is a couple of minutes walk away so if the weather is rubbish you can hop on the bus to the main campus. This bus service also goes ot the bus and train station and beyond. Best wishes, Sharon

I really enjoy staying in Ravenstones. It's located in Ranmoor village and although less social than Endcliffe, the quite nights and surrounding environment make up for it, it's a lovely place to live and if you're more social it's a 10 min walk from Endcliffe so you're not too far away from the parties.
Thank you for such an insightful and informative review! We're really pleased to hear that you're enjoying your time in Ravenstone - it really is a lovely surrounding environment. If there’s anything else you need or any questions you have, don’t hesitate to get in touch with our Customer Service team at acs-customerservices@sheffield.ac.uk. Best wishes, Lucy

Ranmoor village itself is brill if you prefer a quieter life. Less hustle and bustle that is found in the other accommodation sites for the University of Sheffield. It's just a little too far away from the university itself for my liking though!
