Very quiet. Good for postgraduate students. Enjoy time living and studying here. Some complained about the strict rules, but, it's the rest time after 11pm. Please show respect to others. Any pubs, bars or clubs can satisfy who like parties, not melton hall.

All the Answers You Need About Student Accommodation

What tenancy length do I need?

Some students choose to stay during the academic year, whilst others – particularly international students – require a tenancy that covers the entire year. You can also find student accommodation that is available for one or two terms, classified as a “short stay” on our search filters.

Should I stay in catered student accommodation?

This is totally up to you! Catered accommodation means you will be served meals at set times in a dining hall, and you’ll likely have access to fewer kitchen facilities than if you were to stay in self-catered accommodation.

What is a guarantor and do I need one?

A guarantor is a person who signs a contract to agree to pay your rent if you are unable to. Most university accommodation requires a guarantor, and this applies to both domestic and international students.

Will I need to pay a deposit on student accommodation?

Most likely, yes, you’ll need to pay a deposit. This will be refunded at the end of your stay as long as there is no damage to the room or property.

What bills will my rent include?

If you are staying in university-run accommodation or private halls, your rent should include any utilities such as electricity, gas, water, and internet. Students are not required to pay council tax, however you may need to fill in an exemption form so make sure you check with your local council.

What is purpose-built student accommodation?

Purpose-built student accommodation (PBSA) are residential buildings designed for students. They are often located close to campus, boast modern facilities, include all bills, and often have staff on site to assist residents.

Will my student accommodation be furnished?

Student accommodation is typically fully furnished. Your room should include at least a bed, clothes storage, desk and chair. You’ll likely need to bring things such as bedding and kitchen utensils, but we have a full list here of everything you’ll need.

Quite literally the worst accommodation experience to date. Where to begin? Firstly, I was placed in a flat where the kitchen is tiny compared to the amount of people living in it, you have to wait everyday to cook as only two people at a time could cook, there were 10 people occupying the flat to put into context. Secondly, the fire alarm goes off *constantly*, so if you like to unwind in the evening after a hard days work, forget about it! Thirdly, sometimes the water is off completely, sometimes the hot water is not on at all. Number four, we had a problem with the pipes in our flat which made a constant mind numbing, noise 24/7, (even after it was attended to) which kept people up all night. And finally the price, over £160 you have to pay for this, go somewhere private, in town much cheaper instead, or a bush outside would give you more comfort, or a prison cell.

There are flooded caves that would be a better place to live than here (at least you'd have access to water, unlike at Melton where its turned off for maintenance at least once a week with less than a days notice). Nearly every bathroom is more mould than tile. Halfway through the year here management told us there was unavoidable fire safety related building work required, and so the majority of spring term was spent living in a building site as workmen spent an entire day shouting outside your door. Packages and bikes were regularly stolen as any uni card can access the bike sheds and reception (handily located at the other end of the campus) won't accept package deliveries. The cleaners and porters are wonderful people who do a good job and (for the most part) are great people. But the management do not care about any thing other than the money. If you are a postgraduate looking for somewhere to live I would strongly recommend you look for anywhere other than here.

Even though I'm British I get told I'm a "foreigner" in this hall. No point talking to the management or tutors as they do sweet FA. And don't even think about socializing after 10pm as security will be called and you will be told to calm down or given an asbo.

As a postgraduate student, we are treated like naughty teenagers if you don't follow every rule precisely e.g. You have a day to take out the bins but most of the time the bin isn't full but you get called out publicly for missing it. Additionally you're told off for being sociable - any talking after 10:30 and you could have tutors or security called on you. The management favour the international students. The cleaners also leave passive aggressive notes if things are left on the side in the kitchen but there isn't enough space to fit your stuff. There isn't equal fridge space and the kitchens are tiny but are suppose to hold 14 people! The wifi is also shockingly bad and any repairs take far too long to sort out. A positive is the location and as it's safe, unless someone lets in a nonresident in which people seem to do. So you can have a stranger wandering around! Think every floor should have a pass key to get through.

BAD HALL MANAGEMENT - they do not take students views or welfare seriously, the only care about money. There is clear favouritism towards certain groups of students. A floor is all male, B floor is mixed (this year only one out of 4 flats) and C floor all female so chances are you will be put in a flat of the same gender. Not many chances for socialising - Melton do not encourage integration between flats which is very disappointing.

Melton hall is a nice hall, it very quite and out of the way, not a place for someone who likes a busy lively environment. The cleaning staff and management is not good, they are far too strict (feel like I am being treated like a naughty teenager) at 11pm we get chucked out of the communal areas and have been sent to my room many times when i was chating with a flatmate in the kitchen. The management is patronising and don't take complants seriously and have been almost laughed away and told I have been lyeing many times. THey spilt the fridge and freszer space by rooms, which in theory is a good idea but the draw and self spaces arent't equal, so you mayend up with a tiny amount of space and someone else will end up with loads. The hall is also gender split by floor so the bottom floor is male, middle is mixed and top is all female. Which they dn't tell you before you get here.

Far more expensive than living in rented housing. Location probably very useful for students with demanding courses based on the Jubilee campus (e.g MBAs.) However, the amount of rules, presence of hall tutors etc. may be frustrating for older post grads. I found there to be less privacy and more intrusion than my undergrad experience in halls (at Manchester Uni). This was unexpected, especially as some of my flatmates were returning to education from careers.
