All the Answers You Need About Student Accommodation
What tenancy length do I need?
Some students choose to stay during the academic year, whilst others – particularly international students – require a tenancy that covers the entire year. You can also find student accommodation that is available for one or two terms, classified as a “short stay” on our search filters.
Should I stay in catered student accommodation?
This is totally up to you! Catered accommodation means you will be served meals at set times in a dining hall, and you’ll likely have access to fewer kitchen facilities than if you were to stay in self-catered accommodation.
What is a guarantor and do I need one?
A guarantor is a person who signs a contract to agree to pay your rent if you are unable to. Most university accommodation requires a guarantor, and this applies to both domestic and international students.
Will I need to pay a deposit on student accommodation?
Most likely, yes, you’ll need to pay a deposit. This will be refunded at the end of your stay as long as there is no damage to the room or property.
What bills will my rent include?
If you are staying in university-run accommodation or private halls, your rent should include any utilities such as electricity, gas, water, and internet. Students are not required to pay council tax, however you may need to fill in an exemption form so make sure you check with your local council.
What is purpose-built student accommodation?
Purpose-built student accommodation (PBSA) are residential buildings designed for students. They are often located close to campus, boast modern facilities, include all bills, and often have staff on site to assist residents.
Will my student accommodation be furnished?
Student accommodation is typically fully furnished. Your room should include at least a bed, clothes storage, desk and chair. You’ll likely need to bring things such as bedding and kitchen utensils, but we have a full list here of everything you’ll need.

Great experience, legendary Mia and Sean, I have lived here for two years and will continue in the next two years—love from Chenyu Ge.
The staffs there were very friendly and helpful. They responded very quickly to tenants' needs, such as repairs. They also organized events regularly to bring the people in the building together.
Really good accommodation to stay. They have kind and nice staffs to support you any time! And it is quite and safe.
Great value and location, 5 minute walk to Northumbria University and 10 minute walk to Northumberland Street.
Good experience. Bavly Gerges
Good but the walls are super thin. Can hear flatmates talking all the time and upstairs neighbours footsteps etc making it hard to sleep or work. Terrible for noise. Opposite a construction site as well so no privacy. Fire alarm goes off constantly and it takes them ages to sort it.
After staying at the foundry, for almost 2 years after moving here from another accommodation in the area, i have to say The Foundry is by far the best one, with its reasonable price, it’s close proximity to the Northumbria university campus and its extremely helpful managers, it makes living at the foundry perfect for any student. The management are always available to help you and make things better or correct it when it has a problem. I wouldn’t recommend any other accommodation than this one.
A great accommodation with a wonderful team! They are so lovely and always happy to help!!! The location is perfect it’s so close to the uni, and the studio rooms are so big compared to other accommodations! Definitely worth it 😍❤️🥰✨
As a Northumbria Uni student, the Foundry has been clutch when it comes to its distance from campus and shops. It’s In a serene environment with very friendly and helpful staff.
The Foundry Newcastle is the best student hall EVER! Great location, super close to city center , all those chain groceries only takes few steps to walk to. Weekly cleaning, free laundry etc etc. The managers and all the staffs in Foundry Newcastle were super super friendly and helpful! Tbf the price is affordable and reasonable comparing to the others ones. I’ve been living there for almost a year, good vibes. Would Recommend.
I have been living here for few years since I was a undergraduate student. To be honestly, I do love The Foundry and Newcastle city, as I have spent plenty of precious time during these years. The foundry is a lovely family, usually they will offer us many opportunities to explore our world, such as "welcome party", "New Years celebration" etc, I have to say they are hugely helpful to release our stress, especially after tired studying life. Most important things is The Foundry always keeps our living environment as a high standard and first priority, regularly checking the fire alarm, weekly cleaning... Anyway, I must say it is really enjoyable and grateful for living here as part of our big family, appreciating all the stuffs's efforts (Zoey and Sean). highly recommended and have a nice experience, all the best~
Very Good accommodation. Decent sized rooms and very well equipped gym available all the time for anyone who likes to stay active.
1. committed to providing 24-hour reception service, however, this service has been cancelled since in May; 2. committed to providing free printing/copying service, however, only be permitted to print 5 pages once. I hardly use this service as I printed in the school library before, but the university has closed temporarily, and I had a very important file which needed printing, so I asked for help and your staff refused me as my document page over 5 pages. I do not understand this rule, if maximum 5 pages can be printed at a time, how about I send 3 files (less than 5 pages) in twice or third times, will you help me print them? I am confused, will you have more reasonable and fail solutions? 3. though they did not do the wrong things, some staff's behaviours make me feel uncomfortable and impolite. No service attitudes!
Nice accommodation and staffs are very nice
A pleasurable stay for my final year! The building was well equipped with a number of facilities like the onsite gym, which made student life a lot easier. The reception and maintenance staff were really helpful whenever approached with a query- particularly Jenna from Reception who was very supportive from the start of my tenancy right until the end. The 2 guys on the maintenance team were really friendly and always helpful even for minor issues like a blocked drain.
There are many things to like about ‘The Foundry’. From its location to the staff and facilities. 'The Foundry' is quite the modern student accommodation, with very cosy rooms. It is just a walk away from the city centre, nightclubs and most universities which means no city centre chaos. The staff at 'The Foundry' are always very welcoming and helpful which I feel is quite important when looking for student accommodation. While booking, the staff at 'The Foundry' were able to allocate me with other first-year students which allowed me to make friends and therefore, settle in well - enhancing my university experience.
I really enjoy living at The Foundry, the staff are very friendly. My room is very spacious and there are really good facilities, both in my room and in the communal areas.
Overall a fantastic place to live, I'm very happy and settled here and I always want to showy room off to people.
Re-booked for next year, lovely staff and friendly atmosphere all round
Had maggots and mould in the flat when paid to move in early. Refused a refund. and stuff stolen when flat mate is a known theif by staff, also no social events put on. Dissapointed is an understatement
People at the reception has been so nice, welcoming and friendly! They are offering to help with anything!! The social space is amazing! A lot of facilities! I think that the Nintendo area should add more games like overcook!
