All the Answers You Need About Student Accommodation
What tenancy length do I need?
Some students choose to stay during the academic year, whilst others – particularly international students – require a tenancy that covers the entire year. You can also find student accommodation that is available for one or two terms, classified as a “short stay” on our search filters.
Should I stay in catered student accommodation?
This is totally up to you! Catered accommodation means you will be served meals at set times in a dining hall, and you’ll likely have access to fewer kitchen facilities than if you were to stay in self-catered accommodation.
What is a guarantor and do I need one?
A guarantor is a person who signs a contract to agree to pay your rent if you are unable to. Most university accommodation requires a guarantor, and this applies to both domestic and international students.
Will I need to pay a deposit on student accommodation?
Most likely, yes, you’ll need to pay a deposit. This will be refunded at the end of your stay as long as there is no damage to the room or property.
What bills will my rent include?
If you are staying in university-run accommodation or private halls, your rent should include any utilities such as electricity, gas, water, and internet. Students are not required to pay council tax, however you may need to fill in an exemption form so make sure you check with your local council.
What is purpose-built student accommodation?
Purpose-built student accommodation (PBSA) are residential buildings designed for students. They are often located close to campus, boast modern facilities, include all bills, and often have staff on site to assist residents.
Will my student accommodation be furnished?
Student accommodation is typically fully furnished. Your room should include at least a bed, clothes storage, desk and chair. You’ll likely need to bring things such as bedding and kitchen utensils, but we have a full list here of everything you’ll need.

Been here for three years and I absolutely love it! Special shout out to Brogan at reception!!
Remember my name when I come for a parcel now :)
Glide - had issues with connecting for first few weeks. Cleanliness of room when I moved in was quite bad, active mold and the green cushion was quite damaged.
love my studio, really cosy, good location, has everything I might need (gym, social spaces, private kitchen etc) and staff are really friendly and sort out any issues quickly.
My biggest complaint about it is , the staff. There is maintenance going on almost every day. As a nursing student , I cherish my days off. However , this is impossible at quay point. constant emails about maintenance needing access to rooms. Feeling too nervous to shower between 9 and 5 incase they come in without knocking ( yes this has happened before!). I do not understand why they can't do maintenance during summer when almost everyone has left. I won't forget the consistent emails regarding rent. like I said I am a nursing student , my number one priority is travelling to placement ( Which can be as far as Morpeth or Sunderland). So due to this , I have made plans with the rent people to reschedule my rent at a different time when my bursary comes in. However a rude staff member constantly knocked on my door to tell me to pay my rent? do they not communicate about my rent? why come to my door when it can be as simple as an email. Im so angry.
Good enough, VERY overpriced for the fact you get no appliances. For the past 2 or 3 months maintenance have required access to rooms EVERY DAY from 10am meaning your privacy is lost. You’d think they would carry out “essential” works over summer with no tenants. Don’t stay here if you don’t want to be interrupted every day.
Friendly Staff, Rooms are cozy and there's a lot of storage. The maintenance team is efficient and quick to respond to issues. The common room is always clean and I always feel safe :) -Avgi
Perfect location. Friendly staff. Quick maintenance responses, however, rarely any follow ups when needed.
I found Quay Point after receiving a very late offer to university and had quite short notice to find a place to live. The service I got when enquiring with the staff was excellent and was shown options past what I had intially inquired after. The studios themselves are pretty spacious and facilities are great. The bathrooms especially stand out from other studios I looked at. Staff are always very friendly and willing to help but aren't intrusive like in some other accommodations. The buildings are generally quiet which is ideal for if you just want to keep to yourself but the communal spaces are very nice and looked after by the staff and ither students. Overall, very good, I've signed on for next year already!
Quiet good student living , this is my second year and i really enjoy it ! Room 215 , block b
The day I moved in, some closet was broken and the toilet was dirty, I was quite upset as it would be assumed they should clean and fix everything before they rent it again but obviously now. HOWEVER, the receptionist is quite helpful and the repair guys also come fix it quite quickly so overall, it’s not bad! :)
6.16 At first I looked at other studios to get the vibe of what it was like and see how it was but nothing really stuck with me. After having a bad experience with shared accomodation I was intent on moving to a studio. I had not viewed this studio yet so my moving here was going to be the first time I would see this place, and let me tell it did not disappoint. From the get go the staff helped me move my items eventhough they were super busy, they answered all my questions via email in a timely manner and I love the fact that they were always there to help. It's literally a five minute walk from the quayside and 10 minutes to the city centre, it is also at a prime location to get buses and manor metro station is just a stone's throw away, I would be living here for 2 years now and honestly I'm glad I moved, I've re-booked this place for my final year at the same room.
I am in Studio G.19 and the room is very well designed. Despite the initial problems I experienced within the first week, everything has been working great and the problems were solved swiftly. The WiFi and Ethernet speeds are exceptional and I could not ask for a more convenient location for my needs.
I've been here for two years and when I tell you that the team will help you promptly I am not kidding. Very friendly staff, they really made my stay comfortable. The location is ideal for me because its barely a 7 minute walk to my uni and I'm closer to the bus stops and metro. If you want peace of mind, Quay Point Studios is the place for you.
Great location, quality room, and a responsive management team when you have a problem.
The staff has helped me a lot and the rooms and the halls are cleaned
Amazing studio, site a lot of space and storage. Near the city centre and great access to uni and shopping.
I lived in the shared accommodation before I had an issue where I needed to move out and live on my own, quay point were super accommodating and helped me get a studio mid term. They checked on my welfare, and even emptied a bin I forgot to take out when I went home for Xmas lol. The studio is so spacious, and with the common room and events that take place I never feel lonely or unsociable. The staff , location and studio itself is amazing and I’m staying here next year as well (my 3rd year) so it truly is the best accom.
I choose my room without even viewing it beforehand, but all the stuff were so helpful in this process. I feel so lucky to live at Quay Point Studios. After I talked to my friends i realised that it is much more convenient and cheaper than many equivalent accommodations. You can easily walk to both universities (I walk to Newcastle U.). It has a gym right in the garden which is always freshly aired. And yes the accommodation has a garden. I like not to exit to the street directly from your door but have a private space instead. The room has lots and lots of starage area and kitchen is quite enough for one person. Lastly, no need to worry about your parcels as well because the reception just stores it for you until you can take it.
Good sized studio near the city centre and Northumbria university. Strong wifi and tv provided. Staff are all friendly and always accessible such as Mick on nights. My flat of 4.26 has a good view of the quayside and gateshead.
I really like living here - the staff and friendly and answer all of your questions. the room is worth every penny, you’ve got plenty of space and i’ve yet to have any issues
4.21 - warm room with great view, comfy bed, good study area and other appliances , good atmosphere and welcoming staff
It’s a great location that’s not far from Northumbria University and a 15 minute walk to the main Newcastle University campus.
I have loved staying at quay point. It is conveniently placed so the walk to Northumbria university is not far, it is easy to get the metro and walk into town. The rooms are also great, I have had no problems with living here
The location has been the best part for me while staying here.
A great space for individualistic people, no social spaces but great location and excellent facilities, quick response to enquiry and staff on hand from 9 to 6 Monday to Friday for any help Lovely place to live to be by yourself
Thank you so much for your kind review! Our reception is open 7 days a week and there is always someone on site 24hrs if you do need anything :)
Amazing place to live in. No social activities yet. Probably there would be some events organized in the near future.
When I first booked here I was really excited to move in and on move in staff were incredibly friendly and helpful (I booked a one bedroom apartment at Quay Point Studios) however I was disappointment when I walked into the room, it appeared to be a lot bigger in photos. I was even more disappointed with utilities - for a one bedroom apartment it's a combi microwave oven and a two top stove there's no kettle or toaster which resulted in me having to purchase my own. If you have a car be quick to book as it's an additional fee and very limited parking. Washing machines are sparse and expensive costing almost £5 to wash and dry one load of clothes (£3.10 for a wash cycle and £1.70 to dry them) so please factor this in when looking at this property. Furthermore, when it comes to rent the 51 weeks payment are divided into 6 so essentially for every 4 weeks/month you pay you're paying 2 months rent a time so for a one bedroom apartment this is almost £2000 a time.
Hello, thank you for taking the time to leave a review about Quay Point Studios! I'm delighted you have received good service from our team! I will be sure to pass on your comments. In regards to the sizing of our studios - viewing is always advised prior to checking in as we offer several grades of studio and each will differ in size and facilities. Our team are always on hand to assist with specific room sizings when booking to live with us and the would be happy to help clarify your room size and layout at any time. As our site is based within the city centre, we do offer very limited on site parking which is chargeable but is very competitive with local rates within the city. This is managed on a first come, first served basis and we do advise this is booked as early as possible to avoid disappointment as our spaces fill up fast due to demand. Our laundry machines are provided by an external contractor called Circuit, as with most student accomodation providers within university cities. The cost per wash/dry is set by Circuit, however i will be sure to pass on your concerns around the pricing. Please note we have two laundry rooms on site, a second and larger laundry room is located just behind D Block and is accessable to all students from both Quay Point and Quay Point Studios. We offer a range of payment plans to help breakdown the rental costs for our students into manageable chunks. Standard payment plans offered at the point of booking range from 1, 4 and 6 installments. However, if you are struggling to meet your financial obligations, please speak to our Sales team at Reception - We pride ourselves on offering a wide range of support to our students and one of the things we are able to offer is a bespoke payment plan where required.
Having lived in the studios for the past 2 years I cannot recommend them highly enough. The facilities are great and the studio includes everything you could ever need. The staff are amazing too, they have been so helpful and have made adjustments to help me settle in. I always feel safe and comfortable with the security presence and I know there is always someone in reception to talk to if I need. Molly Thomson

I love quay point studios and i am already booked for next year. The employees are very helpful and understanding and any occurred problems are fixed in a reasonable time. The rooms are great. Many choices, different sizes and affordable prices for everyone. Furthermore, the wifi is generally good and everyone says that they don’t experience problems but sometimes it happens.
