All the Answers You Need About Student Accommodation
What tenancy length do I need?
Some students choose to stay during the academic year, whilst others – particularly international students – require a tenancy that covers the entire year. You can also find student accommodation that is available for one or two terms, classified as a “short stay” on our search filters.
Should I stay in catered student accommodation?
This is totally up to you! Catered accommodation means you will be served meals at set times in a dining hall, and you’ll likely have access to fewer kitchen facilities than if you were to stay in self-catered accommodation.
What is a guarantor and do I need one?
A guarantor is a person who signs a contract to agree to pay your rent if you are unable to. Most university accommodation requires a guarantor, and this applies to both domestic and international students.
Will I need to pay a deposit on student accommodation?
Most likely, yes, you’ll need to pay a deposit. This will be refunded at the end of your stay as long as there is no damage to the room or property.
What bills will my rent include?
If you are staying in university-run accommodation or private halls, your rent should include any utilities such as electricity, gas, water, and internet. Students are not required to pay council tax, however you may need to fill in an exemption form so make sure you check with your local council.
What is purpose-built student accommodation?
Purpose-built student accommodation (PBSA) are residential buildings designed for students. They are often located close to campus, boast modern facilities, include all bills, and often have staff on site to assist residents.
Will my student accommodation be furnished?
Student accommodation is typically fully furnished. Your room should include at least a bed, clothes storage, desk and chair. You’ll likely need to bring things such as bedding and kitchen utensils, but we have a full list here of everything you’ll need.

Its been two weeks since i arrived in the city, and my experience at the accommodation so far is awesome, i’ve got friendly and nice flatmates which was one of my biggest concerns. So far, couldn’t complain
Great accommodation, lovely staff who go above and beyond to make students feel at home, with great events which happen every week. It's easy to access town and all the local hotspots. Been here 1 year and will be staying again next year. Can't fault the services provided and the staff all love to have a chat with students making it even more better. Any problems with the flat get sorted straight away as they have a on site maintenance man. Would recommend to all students.
Very lovely staff, great community and room was very spacious and nice
The best place to live for students with load of amenities
I have stayed here for 2 years now, and it has been a lovely experience! It is a great location, near to the city and to the quayside. It’s just the right distance away from city to keep the noise away but close enough to get into the madness whenever you feel like. I recommend any student coming to Newcastle to definitely choose Knoll Court! You won’t regret it a single bit!!
I could not recommend a student accommodation more than Knoll Court! The staff are lovely, the monthly events are amazing and so fun! The flats themselves are amazing value for money and spacious and luxurious. The on-site facilities include a gym, vending machine, common room and they’re all such good value for how much you pay :)
Couldn't recommend more!! Knoll court is amazing! I love the location and the staff are so friendly. The events are a bonus and they have great competitions (I won a holiday to Spain!!). The building is well laid out and the rooms are spacious. And all that for an affordable price!! :)
My experience at knoll court has been good - the rooms are spacious with good furnishings, though in need of updating. Problems are usually dealt with well and staff are very friendly. Great value for money at £95 a week for an en-suite.
The staff are all so lovely and will do whatever they can to help. Decent sized rooms with comfy beds, nice shared kitchens. The common room and small gym downstairs are a nice bonus too.
Lovely and helpful staff. Great value for money. Excellent location, 5 minutes walk to Northumbria Uni. Well equipped gym and cosy common room. Best choice so far, looking forward to live here next year. Definitely can recommend!
The team at Knoll Court are lovely and despite the current situation, they've managed to put on activities to lift the mood weekly. The space is really worth it for the money and the added gym is an amazing bonus to the building
Lovely staff and great location. Lived here for all my three years at Newcastle University. Couldn’t Recommend it any higher
Met my boyfriend here and the staff are very friendly
Definitely gonna live here next academic year
This is the loveliest accommodation in Newcastle. Stayed for 3 years will not want to be anywhere else. Great service all year round and in every aspect.
Absolutely amazing accomodation with everything you could ever ask for at a very low price
all of the rooms are a decent size with generous amount of storage. Staff are extremely friendly and helpful :)
Lovely staff, good sized rooms, excellent location for Northumbria uni students.
The receptionists are very helpful and kind
Good experience just anti social flat
Staff are some of the loveliest people you’ll meet and it’s one of the cheaper accommodations with spacious rooms and en suite.
Brilliant accommodation, staff are very friendly and always have events planned for students. Repairs are carried out quickly. Lots of social facilities on site and a great halls to live in.
Super friendly staff, nice location and atmosphere.
I stayed during my 1st and 3rd years at university. All the staff on site are great and friendly! The rooms are a nice size and with ethernet access I was able to use my computer setup without issue. Social spaces are relatively small but never too busy and always clean. Access to a table tennis table is a bonus and good fun. Only main issue would be the washing system. Circuit is an overly expensive service and due to the lack of space available in the washing machine area, there is often a wait for machines, so choose your times to do your washing carefully.
Absolutely amazing place, staff couldn't be better and the atmosphere is great. I couldn't recommend this place for students more - absolutely outstanding!
Couldn’t praise this place enough! Staff are always friendly and helpful. I’ll be living here for the full 3 years during university! Amazing throughout
Despite covid restrictions theve down a grand job of carrying on doing stuff as well as being hugely helpful in the day to day
Cannot fault anything about the accommodation or staff. No problem is ever too big for the staff, they always help and repair when needed and will chat and smile all day. Accommodation is everything that I need and great value for money. Look forward to staying here again next year!
Quiet, nice place to stay. Friendly staff
I’ve lived at Knoll Court for 2 years and I wouldn’t live anywhere else! Great staff! Great value for money! I love the events they put on and how they genuinely seem to care about every resident - plus it’s so close to Uni I can wake up 5 mins before a lecture.
I loved living at Knoll Court. I stayed at Knoll Court for my Master's year at university and it was one of the best places I've stayed at while studying in Newcastle. The location was ideal - 15 minutes from campus, both a Tesco Express and Sainsbury's local close by, and five minutes from city centre - it is an ideal place to live for a student. Other than location being perfect for the social side of being a student, the quality of the flats are also good for the money you pay, a great value for money. Compared to my first year accommodation, Knoll Court was so much more affordable considering where it is located and for an en-suite and spacious room. I was really impressed with the amount of storage, desk space and the facilities (especially the gym and study room!). The staff at reception were always so friendly and always happy for a chat whenever I passed by - they were always able to offer advice and whenever I had an issue they were able to fix it straight away.
Amazing place, people from the reception will Help you with the greatest room for 90 p/w. Moreover, the Social nights are stunning and it is great for me as a third year student to live there. The reception adviced me the Building with people just from 3rd year to feel more comfy, thats great.
Great accomodation would recommend for all! Great rooms, value money, people atvthe reception, Social night! Amazing
Pros : Location is very good.30 - 45 mins walk to Central Train station.5 mins walk to the nearest Metro train. 10-15 mins walk to the shopping Centre / bars / restaurant, 3 mins walk to the nearest Sainsbury. Northumbria Law & Fine Arts building are 3 mins walk. The Main University of Northumbria Campus is 15-20 mins walk. NCL University is 45mins - 1hr walk. Standard Room- ensuite is big enough with 3/4 size bed, big shared kitchen, shower is good, heating is working. The flats are shared with maximum of 5 people & minimum of 3 people. Its really ideal for students at the City Centre. Cons: If you need to go to Coach Lane Campus the number 1 bus is opposite the Northumbria Uni Library & Civic Centre which is 20 mins walk ( 45 mins Bus journey to Coach Lane ). In the winter the roads are not very well lit & I felt unsafe. You can't choose your room. Staff at Knoll Court are friendly but not helpful.
Great value for money, great location, the rooms and shared areas are really nice but the only thing which lets them down are the staff think it’s perfectly legal to enter your flats without consent, enter your rooms with our consent, and also ‘confiscate’ personal items. Staff break the laws and breach the rights of their tennents on a daily basis
Why stay anywhere else when you can stay at the best! No really the best! Love this place
Really good value, really high quality fittings and the staff are lovely, they will do anything to help!
I have loved spending my first year of uni at knoll court. Compared to all other halls I've seen it is incredible value for money, beautiful bedrooms and ensuites and a perfect location. I have made some amazing friends here.
Fabulous Accommodation, I am now re-booking for my 3rd year. Friendly, Happy and Fun staff. Would definitely recommend. Rents are excellent value for money and lots of competitions are ran throughout the year. Rooms are a great size and really spacious kitchens. Living at Knoll Court has made my time at University much more enjoyable. Thank You!
Single bedroom, absolutely tiny. The bed itself isn't even a single, it's definitely smaller. Uncomfortable sitting room chairs, other halls have much better, much more modern kitchens than Knoll court. Washing prices are a nightmare and limited parking. Location is fab though. Electric heaters didn't last long enough on timer and barley heated up room, non existent in corridors so icy spells were horrid in winter. For £118 a week my room was so overpriced. There isn't a communal space that I was aware of and only one other room/flat on your level in the block I was in.
The location of Knoll Court is fab and the manager is lovely! I wish there were some more social events going on and it would be great to have a common room to meet new people. The rooms are a good size and having 3/4 beds next year will make them even better. I have really enjoyed my year in Knoll Court!
